Texas stopped West Virginia on fourth-down passes into the end zone twice in the fourth quarter, enabling the No. 22 Longhorns to escape with a 17-13 victory on Saturday. Texas (5-2, 4-2 Big 12) overcame an offense that produced nearly 100 yards and 27 points fewer than its average. Sam Ehlinger, typically the Longhorns' offensive star, completed just 15 of 31 passes for 184 yards, but he connected with Brennan Eagles for a 7-yard touchdown in the first quarter and with Jake Smith for a 33-yard TD in the third. Freshman Bijan Robinson rushed for 113 yards on 12 carries for Texas. Jarret Doege completed 35 of 50 for 317 yards for West Virginia (4-3, 3-3) but failed to throw a touchdown. Texas had a sizeable edge in first-half yardage - 210-137 - but left the field with only a 10-7 lead. In its 41-34 overtime win at Oklahoma State on Saturday, Texas received two field goals from junior kicker Cameron Dicker. Those field goals, though, weren't uncontested. First off, the Cowboys had 11 players on the field who were attempting to block those kicks. Oklahoma State also had a video board operator who attempted to ice the kicker. On a 40-yard attempt at the end of the first half, Oklahoma State put up a series of yellow lines on a large video board behind the goalpost. As football fans know, the goalposts are also yellow. It appeared that the video board just showed fans cheering when Dicker attempted a 20-yard kick at the beginning of the second quarter. After his two makes on Saturday, DIcker has made 14 of this season's 18 tries. At a press conference on Tuesday, UT coach Tom Herman was asked about Oklahoma State's video board strategy. Herman said he has been in contact with the Big 12 administrators. "I addressed it with Commissioner (Bob) Bowlsby and Ed Stewart, the associate commissioner for football, and they assured me that is not permissible by Big 12 standards. Ossai was named the Big 12 defensive player of the week for the first time in his career on Monday. This comes after he was named the Walter Camp national defensive player of the week on Sunday. Ossai had 12 tackles, six tackles for loss, three sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery in UT's 41-34 overtime victory over then-No. 6 Oklahoma State. Quarterback Sam Ehlinger told reporters Monday about a phone conversation he had with Ossai after the Oklahoma game in October. Ossai was upset that he didn't make game-changing plays against the Sooners. Ossai closed the Oklahoma State victory with a fourth-down sack of Spencer Sanders. Sam Ehlinger threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Moore in overtime and Joseph Ossai sealed the victory by sacking Oklahoma State quarterback Spencer Sanders as Texas knocked off the previously unbeaten and sixth-ranked Cowboys 41-34 on Saturday. Oklahoma State (4-1, 3-1 Big 12) outgained Texas 530 yards to 287, but the Cowboys turned the ball over four times and saw their hopes to reach the College Football Playoff take a major blow. Same goes for the entire Big 12. After Kansas State's loss to West Virginia earlier in the day, Oklahoma State entered the game as the only remaining unbeaten team in Big 12 play. Now, the race is jumbled and Texas (4-2, 3-2) is back in the picture to possibly play in the championship game.

Sanders passed for career highs of 400 yards and four touchdowns, but he fumbled twice and threw an interception - turnovers that led to 13 Texas points. Tylan Wallace caught 11 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns while Chuba Hubbard was held to 72 yards on 25 carries for the Cowboys. Oklahoma State drove into Texas territory late in the first half with a 24-17 lead, but Ossai stripped him and Texas defensive tackle Ta'Quon Graham recovered and returned the ball to the Oklahoma State 20. The Longhorns got just a field goal out of it, and Oklahoma State took a 24-20 lead into the break. Sanders threw his fourth touchdown pass - a 9-yard toss to a well-covered Wallace - to give Oklahoma State a 31-20 lead. Texas' D'Shawn Jamison returned the kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown. Texas Longhorns head coach Tom Herman expects junior Jack linebacker Joseph Ossai to be available on Saturday in Stillwater against the Oklahoma State Cowboys after Ossai suffered a shoulder injury during the win over the Baylor Bears. Ossai left the game just before halftime, but was able to return late despite suffering the anterior capsule strain. "He'll be braced up and our plan is to have him participate as tolerated in practice tomorrow," Herman said on Monday. "If he can't go tomorrow, then I would imagine Wednesday, he should be good to go, and I would be pretty surprised if we did not see Joseph Ossai play a significant part in this football game on Saturday in Stillwater." Ossai suffered a similar injury last season and played largely with one arm for most of the year until he was finally able to regain his health during preparation for the Alamo Bowl against Utah. Brewer is listed at 6-4 and 252 pounds. Wiley is 6-7, 254. The 6-6, 244-pound Malcolm Epps, who started seven times as an outside receiver in 2019, is also on the tight ends depth chart. "We have some athletic tight ends," UT receiver Joshua Moore said. "Us doing our job will help them. Them doing their job will help us." Said quarterback Sam Ehlinger: "It's a luxury having such a talented tight end room. You look in the NFL and you see what those guys are doing. It's a lot of really big bodies, big tight ends. It creates matchup problems in the secondary. You can also flex them in and have a solid run game because they're versatile."

Brewer was asked about the qualifications for playing his position at UT. In his mind, on-field intelligence is the top trait of a Texas tight end. Making plays in the passing game is another must. And since he likened his role to "a fullback almost in the NFL," physicality is another key. For Brewer, that physicality has been an acquired trait. He weighed only 205 pounds when he won a state title in his final game at Lake Travis. Over the past few years, though, he has packed on the pounds while learning how to play in the trenches. "I didn't really block much in high school. I wasn't a very good blocker," Brewer said. "When I came in here, it's definitely improved." - Austin American Statesman

Sam Ehlinger passed for an early touchdown, then ran for two more in the second half to lead Texas to a 27-16 win over Baylor on Saturday that snapped the Longhorns' two-game losing skid. Ehlinger set up Texas' first touchdown with a 42-yard completion on a leaping catch by Joshua Moore. Those two connected again on a 3-yard scoring pass that put Texas ahead 13-3 at halftime. Texas (3-2, 2-2 Big 12) went ahead 20-3 with a punishing 80-yard drive to open the third quarter, mixing in runs with freshman Bijan Robinson in his first career start, before a Baylor pass interference penalty set up Texas inside the Baylor 5. Ehlinger then powered in from 1-yard out. Ehlinger scored again in the third when he rolled to his right before taking off for the end zone and splitting two defenders near the goal line. It was his seventh rushing touchdown on the season to go with 17 touchdown passes. Baylor (1-2, 1-2) hadn’t played since Oct. 3 and had to shut down its football program for 10 days because of a coronavirus outbreak on the roster. Saturday's matchup will be a showdown between two of the Big 12?s most experienced quarterbacks. Both four years into their respective programs, Ehlinger has started in nearly every game of his career while Charlie Brewer is a third-year starter. The two have endured frequent comparisons, and when stacking them up statistically, Ehlinger has been the more productive of the two. He's thrown for 10,081 yards and 84 touchdowns, while Brewer has amassed 8,113 passing yards and 55 touchdowns. Baylor head coach Dave Aranda pointed out the similarities between the two during his weekly media availability Monday. "When the game is close and the ball's in his hand, he's going to make a play and own it," he said of the Texas QB. "He's similar to [Brewer] in that respect. I know the offense runs through him. Their ability to have the run game, and there's tempo, there's RPOs, there's some shot plays, there's stacks that they motion to create and try to hide. "But then there's a bunch of key runs by a quarterback counter, quarterback power, by a quarterback zone read. The Longhorns bring their momentum home, where they are 14-5 under head coach Tom Herman. The Frogs will have to bring their A-game down to Austin to have a chance at beating the top-10 Longhorns. This senior quarterback is one of the nation's best under center. He has 11,149 yards of total offense (9,558 passing and 1,611 running) and 104 touchdowns throughout his career and is sure to be a candidate for the Heisman Trophy this season. So far in his 2020 campaign, Ehlinger has a 71.2% completion rate, completing 52 of 73 passes for 688 yards and scoring 10 touchdowns. He also has recorded 81 rushing yards as well as one rushing touchdown this season. Like TCU quarterback Max Duggan, Ehlinger has dangerous legs. He has scored 26 rushing touchdowns in his career at Texas. Just like he did last week, Ehlinger seems to step up in the biggest moments for the Longhorns. He has totaled six game-winning drives, so Frog fans should not get comfortable if their team is ahead because Ehlinger won't go down without a fight. - Dallas Morning News

Bijan Robinson did not practice on Sunday, but Texas coach Tom Herman said his freshman running back is "moving around pretty good." Robinson left Saturday's game at Texas Tech following the scary conclusion to an 11-yard reception. As he looked for more yardage on the play, Robinson attempted to hurdle a Red Raider. Robinson did not clear the linebacker and he landed on his neck after another defender hit him in the air. After the 63-56 win, Herman said that Robinson suffered a strain in his back. Texas now hopes to have him practicing by Tuesday or Wednesday. The top-rated running back in the 2020 recruiting class, Robinson has rushed for 50 yards on nine carries this season. "I don't know medically how he is OK after that, after seeing the still shots of it and whatnot," Herman said on Monday. Since he is a graduate transfer, UT receiver Brenden Schooler got his first look at the Texas Tech defense on Saturday. Schooler, though, did have an in-depth scouting report for one of the Red Raiders. Colin Schooler, his brother, is a graduate transfer and linebacker at Texas Tech. The Schoolers were supposed to play together at Arizona this season. Colin had been a three-year starter for the Wildcats, and Brenden decided to join his younger brother after spending four years at Oregon. Both, however, left after the Pac-12 postponed its season in August. Both Schoolers had good games. Targeted 10 times, Brenden led Texas with seven catches. One of those was a 3-yard touchdown that gave Texas a 31-21 first-half lead. Colin, meanwhile, recorded seven tackles. - Austin American Statesman
