The Wuerffel Trophy announced its Watch List today of 114 players from college football's Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The number is a record for the award since it first began releasing a watch list in 2015. The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is presented each February in Fort Walton Beach. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback from the University of Florida, Danny Wuerffel, the Wuerffel Trophy exists to honor college football players who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society, and inspire greater service in the world. "It is so inspiring to see this record number of athletes being submitted for the award," said Wuerffel. "These young men truly represent college football's most impactful community service leaders. We are proud to honor them." Notable returnees to the Watch List include 2019 finalist Isaiah Sanders of Stanford (transferring for senior season of eligibility from USAF Academy) and semifinalists Teton Saltes of New Mexico and Sam Ehlinger of Texas. - The Wuerffel Trophy

The University of Texas says it anticipates hosting football games this season at 50% capacity in the stands. Athletic Director Chris Del Conte emailed season ticket holders Monday telling them the school is working closely with Gov. Greg Abbott's office and is following state guidelines on social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic. Texas said it's still preparing for the season to start Sept. 5 at home against South Florida. The Big 12 has not yet said if it will duplicate moves by the Big Ten and Pac-12 to play only conference games. South Florida plays in the American Athletic Conference. - AP College Football

Texas senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger was placed on the preseason watch list for the Davey O'Brien Award on Tuesday. Last season, Ehlinger threw for 3,663 yards and 32 touchdowns. Only five quarterbacks who are returning to a FBS-level football team this fall threw for more yards last year. Ehlinger's touchdown passes were bested by six returnees. Ehlinger also ran for 663 yards and seven touchdowns during his junior year. - Austin American Statesman

A publishing platform that specializes in helping athletes build their brands believes that Texas Longhorns senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger would benefit tremendously from the financial opportunities provided by the ability to monetize his name, image, and likeness, especially on social media. Opendorse provided data to Axios that shows potential earning based on data gained over a decade of working with professional athletes and Ehlinger tops the list at $962k based on factors like school, social presence, and success/name recognition.

The data illustrates the extent to which having access to a large social media audience could increasingly force college athletes to place a significant priority on building their online followings as the NCAA moves to lift restrictions. Opendorse's CEO cautioned about the coming shift from "assumptions to reality," but the company's data is already drawing attention on social media, with Texas Director of Recruiting Bryan Carrington using it as a recruiting tool. Expect that to become increasingly common - Forbes expects colleges to hire "brand coaches" to help athletes market themselves. Meanwhile, support personnel and assistant coaches will tout the ability to monetize a prospect's NIL on the recruiting trail in order to land the top players. - Burnt Orange Nation

Ehlinger's GoFundMe fundraiser has crossed $100,000, thanks to a donation from Nick Foles' foundation. "It's been an awesome effort, and I'm very appreciative of everyone that's helped out." Health wise, Ehlinger said he's moved past a stubborn rib injury that cropped up again in February. Quarantine life for Heisman Trophy candidates is just as miserable as it is for us mere mortals. At least Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger is stuck at home with another Longhorn, his younger brother Jake, a linebacker. "Obviously I have a workout partner," Ehlinger said Thursday, "and he's probably gotten sick of being in quarantine with me because I'll take him in the backyard and I'll pelt footballs at him when I want to throw." Targeting a return to Royal-Memorial Stadium is far more tricky.

Ehlinger spends his days working out in a makeshift weight room in his mom's garage, taking online classes and trying to connect with teammates tossed far and wide. Like everybody else, the senior hopes for the best. "I'm going to approach this as the season is going to start on time," Ehlinger said on a conference call with reporters. "I'm going to take every day as if it's another day when I'm at the facility." Ehlinger has long known his power extends far beyond the football field. On March 25, the Westlake product started a COVID-19 fundraiser on the GoFundMe website with the goal of raising $1 million. On Wednesday, it crossed $100,000. - Austin American Statesman

After leading Texas to 19 wins over the past three seasons, Sam Ehlinger is doing his part to beat an even bigger opponent. Ehlinger took to social media on Friday to announce a fundraiser for COVID-19 relief. Through a GoFundMe page, the Longhorn quarterback said he wants to raise $1 million. The donations will be distributed to both national and local organizations like the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the Central Texas Food Bank. Within the first hour of Ehlinger's fundraiser, he had raised around $5,000. That number had tripled as of Friday afternoon. Names on the list of donors included Mike Yurcich and Tim Beck.

On Friday, Texas coach Tom Herman told that American-Statesman that "I'm just so proud. Ever since I've known him, he has used his celebrity to help other people, more than anybody I've ever seen. And it's real. It is not a show. It's important to him. … Such a great representation not just for Texas football, not just for the University of Texas, not just for Austin, not just for the state of Texas but for the entire country. It's just amazing. Amazing." - Austin American Statesman
