2022 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD CANDIDATE: Bijan Robinson (Jr.), Texas,...Former NFL Draft Scout analyst Dane Brugler, now with The Athletic, rates Bijan Robinson (6-0, 220) as the best running back prospect in the 2023 draft and says he would have been the top back picked in 2022. Says Brugler: "He established himself as one of the best backs in the country from day one, averaging 8.2 yards as a true freshman (2020)...finishing with 1,127 rushing yards last year as a sophomore...Robinson is a special back for several reasons - most of all, his ability to force missed tackles due to his unique mix of elusiveness and power. He is a one-cut maestro with the twitchy reflexes in his lower body to start-stop in a blink and leave broken tackles all over the field. Robinson's burst allows him to accelerate rapidly, and he runs with the physicality to keep his balance through contact…. Robinson is at his best on zone-stretch and outside runs, where his field vision and cutback burst helps him create. Robinson shows dynamic skills as a pass catcher, both out of the backfield and lined up in the slot. His elusiveness translates well to the passing game, and he can dust coverage on hitches or angle routes...He also needs to show better attention to detail as a pass blocker." Aw, cmon Dane why waste him as a blocker when he can be a dangerous outlet receiver. - Frank Cooney, Draft Scout & The Athletic

  07/08/22 - Quinn EwersrJr/2025, Texas, 6-2, 214 (DS#4 QB) + More +

In 2015, a yearlong power struggle inside the University of Texas administration finally ended and beer started flowing at Royal-Memorial Stadium. Now UT prefers Longhorns fans drink Bud Light. Anheuser-Busch, one of the nation's largest brewers, announced Thursday that it will become the "exclusive domestic and craft beer sponsor" of Texas athletics, the Texas Exes alumni association and the AT&T Red River Showdown game against rival Oklahoma. The university has signed a five-year marketing and advertising agreement with Anheuser-Busch and Austin-based Brown Distributing. Financial terms were not disclosed. UT signed a similar marketing agreement in 2017 with Constellation Brands, the makers of Corona, the nation's top imported beer.

Bud Light will release UT-branded packaging in 16-ounce aluminum bottles and 12-ounce cans in the state of Texas starting Sept. 1. Texas fans attending home games at Royal-Memorial Stadium have become accustomed to being able to purchase a beer, but it wasn't too long ago that serving beer at college events was virtually unheard of. UT athletics just signed a five-year deal with Anheuser-Busch. In a statement, Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte said the school was "grateful for the commitment" from both Anheuser-Busch and Brown Distributing, a company that has supported UT athletics for decades. "They're just a fantastic group of folks who are awesome to work with and will absolutely share our devotion to our great Texas fans everywhere," Del Conte said. "We're so excited to welcome Anheuser-Busch to Longhorn Nation as an official sponsor." - Austin American Statesman

Big 12 reporters covering the league believe Texas will have a bounce-back season. But they're not picking the Longhorns to steamroll the competition, either. UT was picked to finish fourth in the preseason Big 12 media poll announced Thursday by the league office. A fourth-place finish would equate to a 9-3 or 8-4 type of season. That would represent a solid move in the right direction after coach Steve Sarkisian's first campaign finished 5-7. Long-term recruiting is also on the upswing with quarterback Arch Manning's commitment.

The class of 2023 is now projected to be easily a top-five haul. The Longhorns' arrow is pointed up. But Sarkisian must win in the here and now. In the writers' preseason poll, Baylor collected 17 first-place votes while Oklahoma was second with 12 first-place votes. Oklahoma State was third, and Texas was fourth. Two writers picked the Horns to win the Big 12 while nine thought the Cowboys could win it all. - Austin American Statesman

Texas running backs Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson along with linebacker DeMarvion Overshown and defensive end Ovie Oghoufu will represent the Longhorns at the league's annual pre-season media event in Arlington. Robinson was also named the Big 12's preseason offensive player of the year on Wednesday, according to the league office. The junior has rushed for 1,830 yards the last two seasons with 15 touchdowns. He also averages 12 yards per reception.

Receiver Xavier Worthy and Overshown also received preseason All-Big 12 attention. Robinson and Worthy were both named to the preseason offensive team while Overshown was put on the preseason defensive team. The Horns sure have plenty to talk about as last season's 5-7 campaign is fully in the rearview mirror. In addition to quarterback Quinn Ewers' transfer and 2023 freshman Arch Manning's commitment, Texas players will likely face multiple questions about UT's hopeful resurgence in coach Steve Sarkisian's second season. - Austin American Statesman

  07/08/22 - Keilan RobinsonrSr/2024, Texas, 5-08, 191 (DS#25 RB) + More +

The going rate for Alabama football championship rings appears to be $60,000. At least that's what's being asked for former running back Keilan Robinson's rings from the 2020 season. As of Thursday, the rings are listed at $60,000 on the website of World Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop, home of the show "Pawn Stars." The rings are from the SEC Championship win over Florida, the Rose Bowl win over Notre Dame and the College Football Playoff championship win over Ohio State.

Robinson transferred to Texas and played for the Longhorns last season. On an episode of "Pawn Stars," the seller named John was looking for $53,000. He and Rick Harrison, owner of the pawn shop, came to an agreement for $40,000. John said he was a college football fan who received the rings as a gift from his uncle. He said he planned to use the money to take his uncle to the national championship game. Robinson spent 2019 and 2020 with Alabama. As a freshman, he appeared in eight games as he finished with 34 carries for 254 yards and two scores. He opted out of the 2020 season. - Montgomery Advertiser

  07/01/22 - DeMarvion OvershownrSr/2023, Texas, 6-3, 229 (DS#10 OLB) + More +

DeMarvion Overshown was the team's leading tackler from a year ago, making 74 stops and along with third-leading tackler Jaylan Ford, Texas has experience at the linebacker position. D'Shawn Jamison, like Overshown, is a super senior and made 48 tackles at cornerback last season and junior Jerrin Thompson made five starts at safety a year ago. Texas was also bolstered by a couple of key transfers with Ryan Watts coming in from Ohio State to play safety and Diamone Tucker-Dorsey arriving from James Madison. Perhaps the most glaring hole on a defense that certainly had a few of them was the lack of a pass rush. No Longhorn had more than 2.5 sacks a year ago and if and how Texas can improve on that could go a long way in determining the efficiency of the unit. - Charleston Gazette-Mail

The Utah Utes are adding another Australian punter to the team. Jack Bouwmeester, who hails from Victoria, Australia, announced on Twitter Thursday that he has committed to Utah. Bouwmeester trained at Punt Factory in Australia. "I am stoked to announce that I have committed & signed with The University of Utah on full-scholarship for this Fall," Bouwmeester tweeted. "I would like to give massive thanks to Aaron Perez for the last few years of help, mentoring & guidance as well as the entire team at PuntFactory Australia - Sav, Darren, Dwayne, Dylan, Jy, and BT," Bouwmeester wrote on Twitter. "Thank you to Coach Wittingham, Shah & Swan for this unreal opportunity. Go Utes." The 6-foot-2, 193-pound Bouwmeester was a three-star prospect who committed to Michigan State in the 2019 class. He did not play for the Spartans in the 2019 season, however, and in the midst of the COVID pandemic in 2020, Bouwmeester left Michigan State and returned to Australia, per SpartansWire. - Deseret News

  05/30/22 - Jermayne LolerSr/2025, Texas, 6-2, 315 (DS#999 DT) + More +

Even when Arizona State defensive tackle Jermayne Lole put his name in the NCAA transfer portal, there was still some hope he might remain to the Sun Devils program because he hadn't closed the door on that possibility. But Lole is indeed moving on after committing to Louisville Friday after a visit to the school. That announcement came before other trips he had planned to Florida, Texas Tech, and Pac-12 foe Oregon.

Lole sat out last season, after sustaining a torn triceps injury in late August. That injury eventually required surgery. He participated in some spring drills on a limited basis did not partake in any contact activity. Lole, a 6-foot-3, 305-pounder, was a three-year starter for the Sun Devils before that injury and was regarded as the No. 2 ranked available prospect in the transfer portal by 247Sports. Lole, who came to ASU from Long Beach Poly (Calif.) High School, recorded 123 tackles, 20 of which were for loss, and 11 sacks in his three years at ASU. - Arizona Republic
