  11/27/20 - Tim JonesSr/2021, Southern Miss, 6-1, 202 (DS#49 WR) + More +

Southern Miss wide receiver Tim Jones received a shoutout from Pro Football Hall of Fame receiver Randy Moss on ESPN's, "You Got Mossed." Moss' last name turned into a verb after he became known for leaping above multiple defenders to make improbable catches during his 14 seasons in the NFL. His segment, "You Got Mossed" features receivers who take a page out his book in making impressive grabs, and Southern Miss' all-conference receiver in Jones, who's missed a good chunk of the year battling injury, made the cut this week. Jones jumped high over the outstrecthed arms of 5-foot-11 UTSA cornerback Cory Mayfield Jr. for a touchdown. USM offensive coordinator Matt Kubik weighed in on the play. "He Mossed that guy. I guess that's the popular term these days," he said. - Clarion Ledger

  11/26/20 - Tate WhatleyrSo/2023, Southern Miss, 6-2, 198 (DS#49 QB) + More +

Southern Miss starting quarterback Tate Whatley is doubtful for Friday's game at UAB after landing hard on his throwing shoulder Saturday. Whatley suffered a strained acromioclavicular joint injury on his right shoulder with five minutes left in a 23-20 loss against UTSA on a bizarre play. He was tackled after he caught his own pass attempt that was batted in the air by a UTSA defender. He is listed as day-to-day according to Southern Miss interim head coach Tim Billings. "It doesn't look real good right now to be honest," Billings said. "But we're going to see, but there's a good chance he will not play this week." Whatley finished 22-of-39 for 272 yards, two touchdowns, a fumble and an interception against UTSA. His 272 yards marked a career-high. - Hattiesburg American

  11/24/20 - Jack AbrahamrSr/2022, Southern Miss, 6-0, 209 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Southern Miss redshirt senior quarterback Jack Abraham has officially entered the transfer portal, a source with direct knowledge of the move confirmed to the Sun Herald on Friday. The decision to transfer wraps up Abraham's three seasons as the Golden Eagles' starting quarterback after informing the USM coaching staff on Nov. 12 that he planned to sit out the final five games of the 2020 season. Abraham will have one year of eligibility remaining after the NCAA decided in August to grant an extra year of eligibility to fall athletes.

Abraham battled through health issues for much of the last month. He didn't play in the 56-35 loss at Liberty on Oct. 24 after testing positive for COVID-19. He returned to make the start the next week against Rice, but suffered a concussion after taking a hard hit on a 15-yard run up the middle in the second quarter. Abraham didn't play again with third-string quarterback Trey Lowe III making starts in the 24-13 win over North Alabama on Nov. 7 and last week's 10-7 loss at Western Kentucky. - Sun Herald

  11/21/20 - Jack AbrahamrSr/2022, Southern Miss, 6-0, 209 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Southern Miss redshirt senior quarterback Jack Abraham, who has battled a concussion and COVID-19 in the last month, has elected not to play for the remainder of the season, a source with direct knowledge of the decision told the Sun Herald. USM interim coach Tim Billings was optimistic earlier this week that Abraham would return to the field this Saturday at Western Kentucky, but Billings has been informed that Abraham will not be playing in the five games remaining in the regular season. Abraham remains with the team and hopes to help the other quarterbacks, the source said. A long list of USM players, including junior running back Don Ragsdale most recently, have chosen to opt out of the 2020 season and leave the program. Others who have chosen to sit out this season and transfer include redshirt senior defensive end Jacques Turner, redshirt junior running back Steven Anderson and redshirt junior receiver Jaylond Adams. - Biloxi Sun Herald

  11/07/20 - Kevin PerkinsrSr/2021, Southern Miss, 6-0, 234 (DS#88 RB) + More +

Kevin Perkins broke one tackle at the line of scrimmage and spun out of another, scoring his career-high third touchdown of the game as Southern Mississippi rallied past North Alabama 24-13 on Saturday. Two plays after Perkins' third TD, Natrone Brooks snagged his first career interception, setting up a 38-yard Briggs Bourgeois field goal with 1:33 remaining to ice the win. Outscoring North Alabama 17-0 in the fourth quarter, the Golden Eagles (2-5) halted a two-game skid and won their first game at home this season. The win is also the first for interim coach Tim Billings, who is the Golden Eagles third coach this season. Frank Gore Jr. rushed for 103 yards on 13 carries to lead a 245-yard ground game for Southern Miss. The Lions were held to 23 yards rushing. North Alabama (0-3), playing its first game since Oct. 17, nursed a 10-7 lead into halftime after Mike Boykin blocked a 28-yard Bourgeois field goal attempt. - AP College Football

  10/28/20 - Jack AbrahamrSr/2022, Southern Miss, 6-0, 209 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Southern Miss quarterback Jack Abraham returned to practice Tuesday after being out with COVID-19. Abraham missed Southern Miss' game on Saturday at Liberty for an undisclosed reason at the time. "I felt really good," Abraham said in regard to his first day back. "A little chest pain here and there, but I think that's just kind of the way (COVID-19) is. I never really had terrible symptoms, just had a little headache, achy, just kind of felt like a common cold or flu. "So I don't think I really had it as bad as other people have, but I feel like my strength and conditioning is really not as far off as I thought it would be." Abraham expects to play on Saturday against Rice, but it will be under the third head coach in four games for Abraham. - Hattiesburg American

  10/17/20 - Jack AbrahamrSr/2022, Southern Miss, 6-0, 209 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Southern Miss quarterback Jack Abraham is one of the most accurate passers in school history. His passing efficiency of 144.48 last season is third-best in school history. He leads the conference in yards passing per game (278) and his efficiency rating (148.1) is up almost four points from last season. However, he and his wide receivers have struggled to put together four quarters of offense. Southern Miss has scored 14 points within the first five minutes in the past two games. The Golden Eagles had 17 points after the first seven minutes against North Texas but didn't score again until the last drive of the second quarter. "We've been close really every game," Abraham said. "We've been putting together some good games in the passing game, but not really what we want to do as a whole, but at the end of the day...as long we're winning that's really the only thing that matters." - Hattiesburg American

  10/06/20 - Frank Gore Jr.Fr/2024, Southern Miss, 5-08, 185 (DS#14 RB) + More +

Frank Gore Jr., son of NFL All-Pro running back Frank Gore, had his first breakout game of his collegiate career for Southern Miss. He scored his first career touchdown on a 11-yard run Saturday night in the first quarter, and it only took being in the Golden Eagles' first road game at North Texas to do it. He also had over 100 all-purpose yards after three quarters. Gore Jr. broke the century mark on the ground in the fourth quarter and finished with 23 rushes for 130 yards and one touchdown in a 41-31 victory: Southern Miss' first win of the season. The program has been raving about Gore since he stepped on campus. He came into Southern Miss as their highest-rated prospect. The freshman running back came in with just 23 rush attempts for 78 yards on the season. The 18-year-old originally committed to Florida Atlantic but decommitted from the program once Lane Kiffin left for Ole Miss. - Hattiesburg American

  10/03/20 - Frank Gore Jr.Fr/2024, Southern Miss, 5-08, 185 (DS#14 RB) + More +

Frank Gore Jr. ran for 130 yards, Jack Abraham threw for a pair of scores and Southern Mississippi beat North Texas 41-31 on Saturday night. Gore's 100-yard rushing game was the first for the Golden Eagles' since De'Michael Harris did it on Nov. 16, 2019. Abram threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Demarcus Jones and Gore ran it in from 11 yards out to give Southern Mississippi a 14-3 lead in the game's first 4 1/2 minutes. The Mean Green's Tre Siggers capped an 80-yard scoring drive with a 1-yard scoring run with 1:54 before halftime. But Southern Mississippi (1-3, 1-1 Conference USA) drove 46 yards in 70 seconds, and Briggs Bourgeois kicked a 46-yard field goal to put the Golden Eagles up 20-10 at intermission. Mayberry's 4-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter stretched Southern Mississippi to its largest lead at 34-17. Austin Aune threw for 330 yards and two scores for North Texas (1-2, 0-1). - AP College Football

  09/08/20 - Jack AbrahamrSr/2022, Southern Miss, 6-0, 209 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Jay Hopson is reportedly out at Southern Miss. Hopson was in his fifth season at the school and led the Golden Eagles to bowl games in three of his first four years. Southern Miss was expected to be a top contender in C-USA this year. Those expectations appeared all but gone when South Alabama rolled into M.M. Roberts Stadium on Saturday and beat Southern Miss 32-21. South Alabama came into the night riding a 15-game road losing streak. Southern Miss was once one of the top teams in C-USA but continued to fade under Hopson. Southern Miss is playing short-handed this fall after several of its top players opted out of the season due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic. Defensive end Jacques Turner, linebacker Racheem Boothe, running back Steven Anderson and wide receiver Jaylond Adams all decided to sit out the season and were key losses for Southern Miss. - Denton Record

  09/05/20 - Jack AbrahamrSr/2022, Southern Miss, 6-0, 209 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Senior quarterback Jack Abraham has always been an efficient passer. There's no indication he's lost that skill either. Abraham was 22-for-32 passing for 314 yards. He went into halftime having completed 12 of his 14 pass attempts, and one of those incompletions came on a drop. Despite the fact that Abraham has played for five offensive coordinators in five college seasons, he's still managed to put together a productive career. Given the way he started his senior campaign, it seems like Abraham could be on the way to another strong year. - Clarion Ledger

  09/05/20 - Frank Gore Jr.Fr/2024, Southern Miss, 5-08, 185 (DS#14 RB) + More +

Southern Miss was one of the worst rushing teams in college football last year, averaging 117.5 yards per game. That ranked 121st out of 130 FBS squads. The Golden Eagles started off on an even worse pace Thursday night, rushing for just 95 yards on 37 carries. Freshman Frank Gore Jr. provided a little stability in his debut, leading the team with 32 yards on 12 attempts. But without a stable rushing attack Southern Miss' offense remains one-dimensional. - Clarion Ledger

  09/03/20 - Tim JonesSr/2021, Southern Miss, 6-1, 202 (DS#49 WR) + More +

Senior Tim Jones returns to lead the Golden Eagle receiving corps as he has increased his catch total in each of his first three seasons, going from five as a freshman to 42 as a sophomore and then 73 last fall. His 110 career catches leaves his 30 shy of the school's career top five as former running back Ito Smith collected 140 grabs from 2014-17 to hold fifth place. Jones collected at least five catches in nine games, including at least seven in each of the final four games last season. - Southern Mississippi Football

  09/03/20 - Jack AbrahamrSr/2022, Southern Miss, 6-0, 209 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Jack Abraham opens his third season as the quarterback for Southern Miss. The Tulane contest last January was his 22nd career game and 21st start at QB (a 22nd start was at WR against Louisiana Tech in 2018) and he has now thrown for more than 200 yards in a game 16 times and for 300 yards or more seven times. Since the start of the 1987 season, the Golden Eagles have started 27 different quarterbacks. The three former Southern Miss QBs to make the most starts over that span include Austin Davis (45), Brett Favre (43) and Nick Mullens (41). Abraham became only the third Golden Eagle QB to reach the 3,000-yard mark in a season in 2019. Austin Davis did it three times during his career and Nick Mullens did it twice. In fact, the 3,496 yards for Abraham ranks tied for second for most passing yards in a Southern Miss single season with Austin Davis (2011). - Southern Mississippi Football

In his junior campaign, Jemby notched 93 tackles with a pair of interceptions to lead the way for the Golden Eagles. Hemby finished second in 2018 in total tackles for the Golden Eagles defense that ended the year No. 3 nationally in total defense (278.4) with 51 stops. He also added a team-best six interceptions, which tied for the league lead. - Southern Mississippi Football
