  South Dakota State is seeded seventh and will host a second-round matchup in the upcoming Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs. The 24-team field was announced Sunday morning by the NCAA. The Jackrabbits, 8-4 overall, will be making their eighth consecutive playoff appearance and ninth overall. SDSU is among the top eight seeds for the fourth year in a row. SDSU will face the winner between the Nov. 30 first-round matchup between San Diego and host Northern Iowa. The Jackrabbits' first game is set for a 1 p.m. kickoff Dec. 7 at Dana J.   NOV 18 MISSOURI VALLEY CO-NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK: QB Keaton Heide, South Dakota State, 6-3, 195, Fr., (Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata H.S.),...Heide completed 15-of-16 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns in the Jackrabbits' 38-7 home victory over No. 4/5 Northern Iowa on Nov. 16. A true freshman, Heide completed each of his first 14 pass attempts to set an SDSU single-game record, including touchdown passes of 10 yards to Jaxon Janke and 20 yards to Cade Johnson in the second half. Heide also recorded a 65-yard pass to Johnson in the second quarter that set up SDSU's first touchdown.   NOV 18 MISSOURI VALLEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEE: CB Don Gardner, South Dakota State,...Gardner returned a fumble 24 yards for a touchdown and recorded two tackles, including a tackle for loss, to help lead a Jackrabbit defense that limited Northern Iowa to 85 passing yards in a 38-7 home victory on Nov. 16. Gardner's fumble return for touchdown was the first by a Jackrabbit player since 2012 and ignited a 21-point outburst in the fourth quarter.   Keaton Heide was 15-of-16 passing with two touchdowns, the defense forced two turnovers and South Dakota State overwhelmed Northern Iowa 38-7 on Saturday in a battle of top 10 FCS teams. The Jackrabbits, ranked eighth in the STATS FCS Top 25, clung to a 17-7 lead entering the fourth quarter before breaking the game open. Don Gardner had a 24-yard fumble return after Tolu Ogunrinde's defensive stop, Cade Johnson had a 20-yard touchdown reception set up by an interception and backup quarterback Kanin Nelson had a 12-yard TD run. For the Jackrabbits (8-3, 5-2 Missouri Valley Conference), it was their third straight home game against a ranked opponent but the first they won. They piled up 337 yards of offense; 196 on Heide's arm. Johnson had six catches for 134 yards. Fourth-ranked Northern Iowa (7-4, 5-2) had its four-game winning streak snapped.   2019 WALTER PAYTON AWARD WATCHLIST ADDITION: RB Pierre Strong Jr., South Dakota State,...A sophomore from Little Rock, Arkansas, Strong leads the Missouri Valley Football Conference — and ranks sixth nationally - in rushing with 975 yards for an average of 108.3 yards per game. He has topped the 100-yard mark four times this season and has scored seven rushing touchdowns, while adding 13 receptions for 167 yards and a score. Strong also ranks third among FCS players with an average of 7.62 yards per carry. Strong is the second Jackrabbit player to be under consideration for the Payton Award this season, joining wide receiver Cade Johnson.   Pierre Strong Jr. ran 18 times for 99 yards and a touchdown and completed an 89-yard TD pass to Cade Johnson as South Dakota State beat Missouri State 35-14 on Saturday. Strong made a forward flip to Johnson on a fly sweep and Johnson took it to the end zone for the longest pass play in nearly five years for the Jackrabbits (7-2, 4-1 Missouri Valley Football Conference). Austin Sumner completed a 91-yard TD pass to Jake Wieneke on Nov. 8, 2014.

South Dakota State opened a 21-0 lead with touchdowns in each of the first three quarters. The Bears (1-7, 1-4) cut the deficit to 21-7 on a 57-yard run early in the fourth quarter, but the Jackrabbits scored twice to make it 35-7 before Missouri State capped the scoring. Johnson finished with five catches for 164 yards and a score for South Dakota State. Keaton Heide passed for 173 yards and a score. Jiles' goal-line surge for a score broke a 17-17 tie and put the Bulldogs (4-4, 3-2 Southern Conference) ahead with 6:22 to play. Linebacker Jaleel Laguins recovered an East Tennessee State fumble with 1:10 remaining to seal the win. Chris Oladokun threw for 134 yards and a touchdown for the Bulldogs. Jay Stanton ran for 44 yards and a score.

Stanton capped Samford's first drive with a 2-yard scoring run. But the Bulldogs allowed two unanswered East Tennessee State touchdowns in the second quarter to trail 14-7 at halftime. Mitchell Fineran opened the second half with a 42-yard field goal and Oladokun's 3-yard touchdown throw to Michael Vice late in the third gave the Bulldogs a 17-14 lead.
