  12/12/20 - JT DanielsrSr/2024, Rice, 6-2, 237 (DS#999 QB) + More +

JT Daniels threw three touchdown passes, two of them to George Pickens as No. 12 Georgia broke away from Missouri 49-14 Saturday. Zamir White ran for 126 yards and a score while Georgia (7-2) dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Missouri (5-4) managed just 200 yards of offense after topping the 600-yard mark each of the past two weeks. The game was tied at 14 when Pickens reached to his shoe tops to gather in a 36-yard touchdown toss from Daniels in the final minute of the first half. The pair connected again on the first drive of the second half, with Pickens catching a short pass on a slant route, stepping out of a tackle attempt and racing 31 yards for a score. Daniels completed 16 of 27 passes for 299 yards. Pickens caught five passes for 126 yards and James Cook caught a TD pass and ran for a score. - George/AP College Football

  12/10/20 - Mike CollinsrSr/2022, Rice, 6-5, 225 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Last season, Marshall went to Houston to face a winless Rice team and left with a hard-fought 20-7 win over the Owls. In the contest, talent on the Rice side of the football was evident, but there was one glaring missing piece for the Owls - a solid quarterback. This season, Rice head coach Mike Bloomgren hasn't had such issues as TCU transfer Mike Collins stepped in nicely to bring some consistency to the Owls' offense. The Thundering Herd (7-0 overall, 4-0 Conference USA, ranked No. 15 by the Associated Press) gets a look at that offense Saturday when Rice (1-2, 1-2) comes to Joan C. Edwards Stadium for a noon kickoff.

Due to COVID-19, Rice has only played in three games so far this season, but Collins has been solid in all three outings. "The one thing that they're a little different this year is that they've got that transfer quarterback in there that's given them some stability at the quarterback position," Marshall head coach Doc Holliday said. Rice went from some of the league's worst quarterback play en route to an 0-9 start last season to Collins, who leads Conference USA in passing efficiency and has the Owls' offense moving methodically. Collins is coming off his best statistical performance, even though it came in a 27-17 loss to North Texas last Saturday. He finished 23 of 34 for 327 yards and two touchdowns. - Charleston Gazette

  12/05/20 - Naeem SmithrSr/2022, Rice, 5-09, 187 (DS#36 FS) + More +

Safety Naeem Smith returned one of five Marshall interceptions for a touchdown and Rice shocked the 15th-ranked Thundering Herd 20-0 on Saturday. The three-touchdown underdog Owls (2-2, 2-2 Conference USA) beat a ranked opponent for the first time since 1997 despite being without their two top offensive weapons and getting outgained 245 yards to 213. Marshall (7-1, 4-1) saw its bid to keep a perfect season going end. Rice was missing quarterback Mike Collins and leading wide receiver Austin Trammell, who did not play due to undisclosed injuries unrelated to COVID-19.

Backup quarterback JoVoni Johnson had not attempted a pass in two previous games this season. The Owls didn't need his arm much, using its ground game behind freshman Khalan Griffin to eat up clock time against the nation's top rushing defense. What opportunities Marshall had, it threw away. Redshirt freshman Grant Wells had by far his worst game of the season. Coming off a five-touchdown performance against Middle Tennessee on Nov. 14, Wells went 18 of 35 for 165 yards. His five interceptions Saturday surpassed his total of four from the previous seven games combined. - AP College Football

  11/26/20 - Luke McCaffreyrJr/2024, Rice, 6-2, 198 (DS#21 WR) + More +

Luke McCaffrey is the future at Nebraska as far as the quarterback position goes, Husker coach Scott Frost says. The redshirt freshman, though, may not be the present. In saying he hasn't determined a starter for Friday's noon game against Iowa (3-2), Frost reminisced about his time as a Nebraska starting quarterback, including a rough patch against Central Florida early in the 1997 national championship season. "I've been kind of benched here as a quarterback, for a short time during a game, and got booed when I came back into the game, to some degree," he said. "Sometimes you need that shakeup, and it puts a chip on your shoulder.

"There's no doubt in my mind Luke McCaffrey's the future around here, but right now to help us win, we've got to play the guy who gives us the best chance. I think Adrian's (Martinez) been playing with a little chip on his shoulder. Luke's playing well, so we're going to evaluate this week and see which one goes out there..."I feel good about both of them," the coach added. "We just need to keep coaching as well as we can, so we get the best that we can out of them." Frost said he feels both Martinez and McCaffrey possess the sort of talent that would allow them to rise the level of, say, Marcus Mariota, whom Frost coached at Oregon, or McKenzie Milton, whom Frost coached at Central Florida. - Lincoln Journal Star

  11/25/20 - JT DanielsrSr/2024, Rice, 6-2, 237 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Kirby Smart has found his new starting quarterback. In his first Georgia start, Daniels led the Bulldogs to a 31-24 win over Mississippi State and put up some numbers that hadn't been posted by a Georgia QB in nearly a decade. The USC transfer and former five-star recruit finished 28 of 38 for 401 yards with four touchdown passes and no interceptions. It was the Bulldogs' first 400-yard passing game since Aaron Murray in 2013 and their first 300-yard, four touchdown pass performance since Murray during that 2013 season. - Birmingham News

  11/24/20 - JT DanielsrSr/2024, Rice, 6-2, 237 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Georgia's offense got just what it needed from the Southern California transfer. Accuracy. Connecting on the deep ball. A turnover free game. And Daniels taking a knee in the victory formation as Georgia improved to 5-2. The students chanted "JT, JT." "It's started to sink in a little bit but it really hasn't yet that I got to play football again," Daniels said on a postgame Zoom session with reporters, his first time speaking to the media as a Bulldog. "I've really felt a lot of gratitude, gratitude for my family, for this team, for this coaching staff, for everyone for helping me get back on my feet and play football again." So the question was asked in one way or another of coach Kirby Smart, why did he wait so long to send Daniels into a Georgia game? He understood why people would wonder why Daniels didn't play before Saturday night. "Absolutely, I would," Smart said.

He said fans should take into consideration his 20 some years of coaching experience and even more from offensive coordinator Todd Monken. "Maybe the question should be, man, aren't they glad they got JT here when nobody thought maybe they needed him?" Smart said. "Would I have loved him to go out and do that same thing to other teams? Absolutely. But the decisions were made on who we felt gave us the best opportunity to win, and a lot of that had to do with mobility and Stetson's play. As Stet struggled, we had to look for other options." Yes, the 6-foot-3, 210-pound Daniels was coming off a torn ACL sustained in the season-opener last year, but the Bulldogs struggled mightily at the position since the second half of the Alabama game with Stetson Bennett and D'Wan Mathis. - Athens Daily Banner

  11/24/20 - Luke McCaffreyrJr/2024, Rice, 6-2, 198 (DS#21 WR) + More +

Luke McCaffrey, one week after replacing a struggling Adrian Martinez behind center and leading the Huskers to their first win, on Saturday found himself on the other side of calls for the backup to come into the game and create a spark as NU once again struggled to find any kind of consistency. The redshirt freshman finished 15-of-26 passing for 134 yards, carried the ball a whopping 26 times for 122 yards, scored two touchdowns and threw three interceptions. Nebraska's struggles certainly aren't contained to one position, and NU coach Scott Frost said as much after the game.

But they're magnified at quarterback, where the playmaking and bravado that defined Frost's offenses at Central Florida and Oregon have disappeared over nine losses in Nebraska's past 12 games. "Consistency of execution. We've got to be able to throw the ball down the field. I have to look at the tape, but I feel like we had some guys running open downfield," Frost said when asked what's holding NU's offense back. "Whether it's protection or vision, or just trusting it and throwing them on time, we've got to be a better football team at throwing the ball down the field. That's kind of how this offense is built, it always has been, and we're not good enough at it right now." - Lincoln Journal Star

  11/21/20 - JT DanielsrSr/2024, Rice, 6-2, 237 (DS#999 QB) + More +

JT Daniels made quite a debut between the hedges, throwing for 401 yards and four touchdowns as No. 13 Georgia held on for a 31-24 victory over Mississippi State on Saturday night. Playing for the first time since the 2019 opener with Southern Cal, Daniels became the third quarterback to start for the Bulldogs (5-2, 5-2 Southeastern Conference) this season. It looks like they've finally found their guy. The transfer from USC delivered one big play after another, capped by a 40-yard touchdown pass to Kearis Jackson that broke a 24-24 tie with 9:50 remaining. What made it more impressive: Jackson and George Pickens had dropped potential TD passes on back-to-back plays, and a holding penalty left Georgia with third-and-20.

But Jackson slipped behind the secondary in the middle of the field, and Daniels spotted him to finally finish off pesky Mississippi State (2-5, 2-5). Daniels became the first Georgia quarterback to pass for more than 400 yards since Aaron Murray against Auburn in 2013. Freshman Jermaine Burton was Daniels' favorite receiver, hauling in eight passes for 197 yards - including TD catches of 18 and 48 yards, no to mention another grab of 49 yards. Burton had just 130 yards receiving through the first six games of the season as Georgia struggled to get its passing game going while Daniels watched from the bench. As Daniels took a knee to close out this game, the limited crowd of about 20,000 at Sanford Stadium chanted "JT! JT! JT!" - Georgia/AP College Football

  11/14/20 - Luke McCaffreyrJr/2024, Rice, 6-2, 198 (DS#21 WR) + More +

Luke McCaffrey had a hand in two touchdowns in his first start, Nebraska's defense made two huge late defensive stops and the Cornhuskers held on to beat Penn State 30-23 for their first win Saturday. McCaffrey took over for Adrian Martinez, who had started all of his 23 previous games at Nebraska (1-2, 1-2 Big Ten) but turned in flat performances in the Cornhuskers' first two games. McCaffrey looked good in the first half, but the Huskers generated only three points in the second and Penn State came back from a 21-point deficit to make it close. A Top 10 team to start the season, the Lions (0-4, 0-4) are off to their worst start since Joe Paterno’s 2001 team also opened with four straight losses. Sean Clifford struggled again for Penn State, getting replaced by Will Levis after turning over the ball on two the Lions' first three possessions. - AP College Football

  10/31/20 - Mike CollinsrSr/2022, Rice, 6-5, 225 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Mike Collins and Austin Trammell combined for three touchdowns and Rice beat Southern Mississippi 30-6 on Saturday. Collins was 12 of 17 for 233 yards passing and four touchdowns. Trammell finished with seven catches for a career-high 143 yards. Rice (1-1, 1-1 Conference USA) rolled to a 23-6 halftime lead, scoring two touchdowns 11 seconds apart. After Collins threw a short pass that Jake Bailey turned into a 72-yard score down the left sideline, the Owls recovered a fumble off a pooch kickoff. On the next play Collins threw a 25-yard score to Trammell to lead 16-0.

A fumble recovery set the Owls up at the Southern Miss 17 and a 13-yard pass to Trammell made it a 20-point second quarter for Rice. The third Collins-to-Trammell TD connection came on a 14-yard pass in the fourth quarter. Juma Otoviano finished with 111 rushing on 25 carries for the Owls, who outgained the Golden Eagles 412-269. Southern Miss (1-5, 1-2) is on its third head coach of the season with assistant head coach Tim Billings taking over for Scotty Walden. Walden announced Tuesday he was taking the head coaching job at Austin Peay. Walden had been serving as the Golden Eagles' interim head coach since Jay Hopson resigned following a loss to South Alabama in the team's opener on Sept 3. Billings oversaw the Eagles in their loss at Liberty last weekend after Walden tested positive for COVID-19. Billings will serve as interim coach the remainder of the season. - Rice/AP College Football

  10/23/20 - JT DanielsrSr/2024, Rice, 6-2, 237 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Georgia enters an off week before traveling to face Kentucky on Oct. 31 - a week later than originally planned due to a pandemic-related SEC schedule change. Many outside the program beg the question - Where has JT Daniels been? The former Southern Cal transfer who received an immediate eligibility waiver has become a frequent addition to the trends list on Twitter during Georgia games. No matter how Bennett has done, there have been inquiries about Daniels. Daniels threw for 2,672 yards, 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions during his first season as a Trojan. He suffered a torn ACL in the 2019 season opener against Fresno State, and had a clean-up knee procedure in December which delayed his recovery. Prior to the Auburn game on October 10, Daniels received medical clearance for contact.

He has traveled, been a full participant in warmups, but has yet to see the field. By some indications, Daniels' isn't yet ready to run a Todd Monken-based offense while still rehabbing from his knee injury and sporting a bulky knee brace. Monken, who has experience with a plethora of offensive styles, said it's "hard to be a statue" and produce explosive plays offensively. Monken's philosophy answers why Georgia brought in Newman, started Mathis and now has stuck with Bennett. They all feature a dual-threat option. They can move in the pocket. Daniels, who already resembles Fromm-like mobility, might have lingering soreness in his knee. If so, the former five-star prospect could be more statue-like and that wouldn't quite fit Georgia's plans. - Macon Telegraph
