  12/04/20 - Melquise StovallrSr/2022, Pittsburgh, 5-08, 186 (DS#182 WR) + More +

For University of Hawaii senior wide receiver Melquise Stovall, there's no shortage of motivation each time that he runs out of the tunnel with the Rainbow Warriors. Just a season ago, Stovall was dismissed from the UH Football team by then head coach Nick Rolovich despite having recorded 248 yards on 18 receptions and four scores, including two touchdowns in his final game. That final game was against Air Force, where he scored two touchdowns in the first half but did not play after halftime following a personal foul penalty in the second quarter. The Monday after that game was played, Rolovich announced that the Lancaster, California native was no longer on the team.

"There are certain expectations required of a football student-athlete here at the University of Hawaii," Rolovich said at the time. "We hold all our student-athletes to these standards and expect them to represent our football program to the highest degree. We wish Melquise the best as he moves forward." Following the dismissal, Stovall remained in Hawaii and after Rolovich left for Washington State and head coach Todd Graham was hired to lead the Rainbow Warriors, Stovall asked for and was granted an opportunity to regain his spot on the team after keeping up with school work throughout the semesters that followed. "I think my family really pushed me. I have a family back home that is depending on me. So, just waking up everyday thinking about them and all the wrong that I've done to them, try to better myself every day. Just by doing the little things like going to class, doing my homework, being a better person out in public. Saying hello to people that I don't know, just being more interactive. I think that was the biggest thing," said Stovall. - khon2.com

  12/03/20 - Phil JurkovecrSr/2024, Pittsburgh, 6-5, 243 (DS#31 QB) + More +

Hafley said quarterback Phil Jurkovec has been practicing and should play against the Cavaliers' suspect secondary and pass rush. Jurkovec emerged from a collapsed pocket in the third quarter of last Saturday's 34-27 victory over Louisville with a left-knee injury and did not return. Jurkovec was an efficient 15-of-19 for 203 yards before being helped off the field with 6:16 to play. He has completed 205-of-336 passes and his 2,558 passing yards are second to North Carolina's Sam Howell (2,842) in the ACC. Jurkovec is fifth in the ACC with a 255.8 yards per game average and he's thrown for over 300 yards in four games. "Phil looks good and I feel confident as long as he continues to progress, he will play as long as he doesn't have many setbacks," said Hafley. - Boston Herald

  12/03/20 - DJ TurnerrSr/2021, Pittsburgh, 5-09, 206 (DS#67 WR) + More +

Pitt senior wide receiver/returner D.J. Turner has been invited to participate in the 2021 College Gridiron Showcase & Symposium Jan. 17-21, in Fort Worth, Texas. Turner, who joined the team in September after transferring from Maryland, is Pitt's second-leading pass catcher, with 39 receptions for 552 yards (14.2 per catch) and two touchdowns. He caught 15 passes - one short of a Pitt record - for 184 yards in the victory against Virginia Tech. He also is Pitt's chief returner, averaging 8.4 yards on punts and 21.9 on kickoffs. Pitt has one game remaining: Dec. 10 at Georgia Tech. Participants in Fort Worth will be evaluated in individual, noncontact drills. They also will attend meetings and, possibly, sit down with NFL scouts and executives. The 2020 College Gridiron Showcase attracted 150 scouts from 31 of the 32 NFL teams and all nine CFL teams. - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

  12/01/20 - Phil JurkovecrSr/2024, Pittsburgh, 6-5, 243 (DS#31 QB) + More +

Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec got a clear X-ray on his injured left knee following the Eagles' 34-27 win over Louisville on Saturday and his status for next weekend's season finale at Virginia appears favorable. Jurkovec was injured in a collapsing pocket with 6:16 to play in the third quarter and did not return. Backup Dennis Grosel came on and led BC to victory with a pair of touchdown passes.

"The X-ray came back clear and I'll go down and find out what we need to look at but that's all I really know right now," said BC coach Jeff Hafley on Sunday. "I texted him and he said it is sore but nothing too bad. I'm pretty optimistic at this point so we'll see what happens," he added. Jurkovec injured his right shoulder in the second half at Clemson on Oct. 31 and saw limited practice time in the week leading up to the game at Syracuse. Grosel was able to practice with the first unit and that experience came into play against Louisville. - Boston Herald

  11/27/20 - Alex KessmanrSr/2021, Pittsburgh, 6-2, 189 (DS#3 K) + More +

When the Panthers travel to Clemson this weekend, they'll do so with one of the hottest kickers in the country. Kessman was named the ACC's specialist of the week after tallying a career-high 17 points in Pitt's 47-14 win against Virginia Tech last Saturday. He made all five extra point attempts and drilled all four field goals, including makes of 52 and 53 yards. Kessman's four field goals extended his own Pitt record, which now stands at 64 career conversions. His two long-distance kicks also secured what is currently an NCAA record. Kessman is now 12 of 18 on field goals of 50-yards or more. That success rate of 66.7% surpasses Arizona's Max Zendejas' 60.9% clip from 1982-85 as tops all-time in Division I-A college football, among those who qualify with a minimum 15 attempts from distance.

With two ACC games left on the schedule - and a possible bowl in Pitt's future - there's time for that percentage to improve or dip. Either way, it's remarkable Kessman is in this position at all after what he went through only last month. Kessman's first field goal of 50-plus yards this season came at Boston College. The big-legged senior drilled a school-record 58-yarder, one that probably would've been good from 65, with 40 seconds left in regulation to force overtime in a game Pitt had little business winning. - Pittsburgh Post Gazette

  11/26/20 - Kenny PickettrSr/2022, Pittsburgh, 6-3, 219 (DS#1 QB) + More +

While missing two games with a serious ankle injury, Kenny Pickett is 15th in the nation in passing yards (2,003). He is only the fifth player in Pitt history with 8,000 career yards of total offense (8,149), joining Alex Van Pelt, Tino Sunseri, Tyler Palko and Dan Marino. With two games left and 7,579 yards passing, he has a legitimate shot to reach 8,000 through the air. Pickett directed an offense Saturday that amassed 556 yards from scrimmage. Pitt also reached 500 against N.C. State (503). - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

Pittsburgh's DJ Turner and Purdue's Rondale Moore each had 15 catches, tied for second-most in a game behind Tyler Snead's 16 receptions for East Carolina against Tulsa on Oct. 30. Turner, a senior who transferred from Maryland, finished with 184 yards and a touchdown against Virginia Tech while falling one catch short of the Pitt record set by Harry Orszulak in 1968. In case you were wondering, Larry Fitzgerald, the greatest Pitt receiver of all time, never had more than 12 in a game. Turner's previous high was eight catches for 186 yards against North Carolina State on Oct. 3. - AP College Football

  11/21/20 - Kenny PickettrSr/2022, Pittsburgh, 6-3, 219 (DS#1 QB) + More +

Senior quarterback Kenny Pickett threw for 404 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another in his final start at Heinz Field as shorthanded Pittsburgh rolled past Virginia Tech 47-14 on Saturday night. The Panthers (5-4, 4-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) were missing 16 players due to COVID-19 protocols, a group that included leading receiver Jordan Addison and three starting offensive linemen. It hardly mattered. Relying heavily on short passes designed to take some of the pressure off the patchwork line in front of him, Pickett completed 35 of 52 passes as Pitt won its second straight following a four-game losing streak.

Graduate transfer DJ Turner caught 15 passes - one shy of the school's single-game record - for 184 yards, including a 64-yard touchdown in the third quarter just four plays after the Panthers stuffed Virginia Tech quarterback Hendon Hooker at the goal line. Turner's long catch-and-run pushed Pitt's lead to 33-14 and sent the reeling Hokies (4-5, 4-4) to their fourth loss in five games. A week after having their game against Georgia Tech rescheduled due to COVID-19 protocols and despite missing a significant number of their regulars, the Panthers had little trouble doing whatever they wanted against the Hokies. Virginia Tech, itself missing 12 players because of the same COVID-19 protocols, simply could not keep pace. - Pittsburgh/AP College Football
