Kenny Pickett signed his Pittsburgh Steelers rookie contract more than two weeks ago, but one more honor from his remarkable Pitt career rolled in Friday. Pickett was named the 2022 ACC Male Athlete of the Year, the conference office announced. He is Pitt's first ACC Athlete of the Year since the university joined the league prior to the 2013-14 seasons. Pickett received 32 votes from the 88-person media panel, followed by Florida State track's Trey Cunningham (18) and North Carolina basketball player Armando Bacot (16).

After leading Pitt to the 2021 ACC football championship, Pickett finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting and was the first quarterback selected in the 2022 NFL Draft. He was Pitt's first Heisman finalist since Larry Fitzgerald in 2003. He joins the ACC Athlete of the Year fraternity that includes such notable athletes as North Carolina's Michael Jordan (1984), Wake Forest's Tim Duncan (1997), N.C. State's Philip Rivers (2004) and Clemson's Trevor Lawrence (2021). - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

The Peach Bowl will go on without Kenneth Walker and Kenny Pickett. Walker, an All-America running back at Michigan State, and Pickett, a record-setting quarterback for Pittsburgh, both announced Thursday they are skipping the bowl game to focus on the NFL draft. Walker and Pickett both revealed their respective decisions in social media posts on Thursday, leaving the 11th-ranked Spartans (10-2) and 13th-ranked Panthers (11-2) without their biggest stars for the Dec. 30 game in Atlanta. Pickett, the ACC Player of the Year and third-place finisher in the Heisman Trophy voting, thanked the university, head coach Pat Narduzzi, offensive coordinator Mark Whipple, his teammates and the fans in a lengthy Twitter post. Pickett called the celebration after the Panthers won their first ACC title with a win over Wake Forest earlier this month "one of the best moments of my career." - AP College Football

In addition to his athletic excellence, Pickett is accomplished academically and from a community and leadership standpoint. Pitt's two-time team captain earned his bachelor's degree in marketing and is presently enrolled in the Katz Graduate School of Business. He has been nationally lauded for his NIL initiatives, which have emphasized philanthropy as well as his teammates. - Pittsburgh Football

2021 JOHNNY UNITAS GOLDEN ARM AWARD WINNER: Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett, whose prolific passing helped lead the Panthers to the first ACC Championship in program history, has been named the winner of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, it was announced today by the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation and presenting partner A.O. Smith. Pickett has enjoyed a highly decorated month of December.

Last week, he was named the ACC Player of the Year. On Monday, he was announced as one of four finalists for the Heisman Trophy. The accolades have been well earned after he led the Panthers to an 11-2 record, their first ACC title and a berth in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl in Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Dec. 30. No. 12 Pitt will face No. 10 Michigan State (10-2, 7-2 Big Ten) at 7 p.m. that night on ESPN as the Panthers play in the New Year's Six for the first time during the College Football Playoff era. Pickett has achieved the most prolific season ever by a Pitt quarterback. Through 13 games, he has completed 67% of his passes (334 of 497) for 4,319 yards with 42 touchdowns and only seven interceptions. Including his five rushing scores, he has totaled 47 touchdowns this season. - Pitt Football

Pittsburgh's Kenny Pickett has the records - and now he has an Atlantic Coast Conference championship to go along with it. Pickett's ascent to a likely Heisman Trophy candidate and a prospective first-round NFL draft pick took another big step forward as he threw for 253 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a 58-yard score, helping Pittsburgh defeat Wake Forest 45-21 on Saturday night and giving the Panthers their first ACC title. Along the way, Pickett set two passing records. Pickett's first touchdown pass of the game, a 22-yard toss on a swing pass to Rodney Hammond in the first quarter, broke Dan Marino's school record of 79 career TD passes. Pickett's second TD pass, a 4-yard toss to Jared Wayne in the second quarter on a slant route, established an ACC record for touchdown passes in a season with 42, eclipsing the mark of 41 set by Clemson's Deshaun Watson in 2016.

By midway through the fourth quarter, Pitt fans were chanting "Kenny Heisman." Alabama's Bryce Young is considered the heavy favorite to win the award, especially after he led the Crimson Tide to a big win against No. 1-ranked Georgia in the Southeastern Conference championship game earlier Saturday. But Pickett will get some consideration, something few expected when the Panthers were picked to finish fourth in the ACC's Coastal Division at the beginning of the season. The recently named ACC Player of the Year got a huge assist Saturday night from his defense, which made adjustments in the second quarter and held the Demon Deacons scoreless on their 13 offensive possessions after spotting them three touchdowns and a 21-14 lead to open the game. The Panthers defense intercepted Sam Hartman four times and sacked him five times. Pickett displayed all of the qualities of an NFL prospect, showing a strong arm to make difficult throws on out-routes, quality decision making and the ability to make plays when the pocket breaks down. - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

Kenny Pickett threw for four touchdowns to break the Pittsburgh school record for scoring passes in a season, and the 20th-ranked Panthers beat Syracuse 31-14 on Saturday night. Pittsburgh (10-2, 6-1 Atlantic Coast Conference, CFP No. 20) won its fourth straight and finished the regular season 5-0 on the road. It's the Panthers' first 10-win season since 1981. Pickett connected with tailback Rodney Hammond Jr. and wideout Jordan Addison in the second quarter. He hit tight end Gavin Bartholomew and Addison again in the third to stake the Panthers to a 28-7 lead. Pickett boosted his season total to 40 touchdown passes, three more than the previous record set by Dan Marino in 1981 and matched by Rod Rutherford in 2003, and his career total to 79, equaling Marino's mark. Pickett finished 28 of 38 for 209 yards with one interception.

Syracuse closed within 28-14 on Garrett Shrader's second touchdown pass of the game to Courtney Jackson late in the third, but the Orange offense struggled all night. Shrader finished 17 of 24 for 217 yards and was sacked six times. Syracuse (5-7, 2-6) was coming off a pair of lopsided losses and failed in its quest to reach the six victories required to play in the postseason. It's the fifth losing season in coach Dino Babers' six years. The Panthers clinched the ACC Coastal Division last week with a 48-38 win over Virginia and were hoping to keep building momentum heading into their second appearance in the conference title game, something they failed to do in 2018. Pitt wrapped up the division that year with a win at Wake Forest, then headed to Miami and was drilled by the Hurricanes. A 42-10 loss to eventual national champion Clemson followed. - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

Kenny Pickett knew a year ago. Something in the Pittsburgh quarterback's gut told him coming back for one more season offered the opportunity to do something special. Something that looked and felt an awful lot like Pitt's 48-38 victory over Virginia on Saturday, when Pickett, rising star wide receiver Jordan Addison and the 20th-ranked Panthers put to bed the idea that this is the "Same Old Pitt" for now, and maybe for good. There will be no chaos in the ACC's Coastal Division this year. Not with Pickett re-writing the Pitt record book and Addison making a compelling case that the conversation on who the best receiver in the country is starts with the skinny sophomore with video game moves and understated swagger. Pickett and Addison connected for four touchdowns, the last a 62-yard catch-and-run with 2:10 remaining that sealed a second Coastal Division title in four years for the Panthers (9-2, 6-1 ACC), a play symbolic of the inherent trust between the two that's made them one of the most dynamic combinations in the country.

Facing third-and-5 from the Pitt 38, Pickett scrambled to his right and threw a jump ball downfield to the 6-foot tall Addison, who outmuscled a defender and then raced to the end zone to put away the Cavaliers and spark a celebration at Heinz Field. "(Addison) played out of his mind today," Pickett said. "He made every play." The Panthers needed every one of them. Virginia quarterback Brennan Armstrong matched Pickett throw for throw, passing for 487 yards with three touchdowns and an interception after returning from an injury that forced him to sit out last week's loss to Notre Dame. Yet every time the Cavaliers (6-5, 4-3) appeared ready to steal one, Pickett and Addison would respond. - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

The senior quarterback turned darkhorse Heisman Trophy candidate made up for it by doing what he's done so often during his record-breaking season: make something incredibly difficult look incredibly easy. Pickett atoned for a late interception that allowed North Carolina to force overtime by firing a strike through a downpour at soggy Heinz Field to tight end Lucas Krull during the first possession of overtime for an 11-yard score that put the Panthers back in front. Pitt's defense did the rest, harassing Tar Heels star Sam Howell into a desperation fourth-down heave that landed in the outstretched arms of Panthers defensive back M.J. Devonshire to finish off a 30-23 victory. "Listen, everyone's talking about offense," Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi said. "You win championships with defense. And that was a championship-level performance." One that kept the Panthers (8-2, 5-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) in control of the Coastal Division with two games to go.

Pitt will earn its second trip to the ACC title game in four years if it wins out or if it beats Virginia next week and Miami drops any of its final three games. Pickett's 32nd touchdown of the season to Krull finished off a 346-yard performance in which he became the school's all-time leader in yards passing. Pickett slipped past Alex Van Pelt's mark of 11,267 career yards in the first quarter, the latest in a series of records that have fallen during his breakout season. "It's awesome but all the records, awards, accolades, it's really a team effort," Pickett said. "I want to thank my teammates, coaches. It's been a heck of a run, but we're not done yet." - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

Kenny Pickett threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score as Pittsburgh pulled away to beat Duke 54-29 on Saturday. Pickett threw for 405 yards as the Panthers (7-2, 4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference, No. 25 CFP) bounced back from a home loss to Miami a week earlier. They have their best nine-game record since an 8-1 mark in 2009. Sam Scarton kicked four field goals for Pittsburgh, which leads the ACC's Coastal Division and improved to 4-0 in road games. Jordan Addison, who scored on a reception and a rush, racked up 171 receiving yards on seven catches.

Duke (3-6, 0-5) lost its fifth game in a row. Quarterback Gunnar Holmberg exited with an upper-body injury on the team's final possession of the first half after throwing for 174 yards and a touchdown. Running back Mataeo Durant gained 81 yards on 25 carries. Pittsburgh went ahead for good on Pickett's 22-yard scramble with four minutes left in the first half after an array of potential momentum-turning plays. The Panthers led 30-19 at halftime, with Scarton connecting on his third field goal in an eight-minute span on the final play of the half. Duke drove to the Pittsburgh 1-yard line on the game's opening possession before Durant's fumble and a wild chase for the ball. Pittsburgh responded, going 76 yards in seven plays with Pickett hitting Jared Wayne on a 10-yard scoring pass. Duke scored on its second possession, with Charlie Ham's 46-yard field goal giving the Blue Devils their first first-half points in three games. - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett made the most of his Heisman Trophy showcase, throwing for 302 yards and two touchdowns as the 23rd-ranked Panthers topped Clemson 27-17 on Saturday. Pickett completed 25 of 39 passes to overtake Alex Van Pelt for the most career completions in school history. The fifth-year senior ran for two drive-extending dives late in the fourth quarter after the Tigers had drawn within 10. Senior linebacker SirVocea Dennis returned an ill-advised shovel pass by Clemson quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei 50 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter that gave the Panthers a 14-point lead they never really threatened to give away.

Pitt (6-1, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) gained firm control of the ACC's Coastal Division by winning its fourth straight following a stunning home upset loss to Western Michigan last month. Clemson (4-3, 3-2) saw its chances for another Atlantic Division title take a massive hit thanks in large part to an offense that remains very much a problem with Halloween looming. Uiagalelei passed for just 128 yards and two picks and was briefly benched in favor of backup Taisu Phommachanh in the third quarter after his baffling shovel pass hit Dennis right in the middle of the No. 7 on the front of his jersey. Phommachanh failed to provide much of a spark, completing just 3 of 7 passes for 23 yards before Uiagalelei returned in the fourth quarter after Sam Scarton's 43-yard field goal gave the Panthers a 27-10 lead with 9:30 remaining. Uiagalelei did run for a 6-yard score with 7:56 remaining, but Pickett twice used his legs to turn convert on third downs as the Panthers ran out the clock while a giddy Heinz Field crowd celebrated. - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

Kenny Pickett threw two touchdown passes and rushed for a score to lead Pittsburgh to a 28-7 victory over Virginia Tech on Saturday. Pickett threw touchdown passes of 8 yards to Gavin Bartholomew and 36 yards to Jared Wayne, and he scored on a 3-yard run - all in the first half - as the Panthers (5-1, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) won their third straight game. Pittsburgh, which won in Blacksburg for the first time since 2015, moved into sole possession of first place in the ACC's Coastal Division. "I think every game is a statement (game)," Pittsburgh coach Pat Narduzzi said. "We're not worried about the crowd or anything else. Just come out and execute and play Pitt football. That's what we came here to do - play Pitt football. We didn't care who was out there. We didn't care what the scoreboard looked like. Just play Pitt football." Pickett, arguably the leader for ACC Player of the Year at the season's halfway point, now has thrown 21 touchdown passes and just one interception. He completed 22 of 37 for 203 yards. "It feels great," said Pickett, who won for the first time in three starts in Blacksburg. "I had this one circled for sure. We had probably one of the worst offensive performances two years ago (a 28-0 loss). It meant a lot to everyone to come in here and get a win." - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

Kenny Pickett passed for 389 yards and four touchdowns on Saturday, and Pittsburgh dominated Georgia Tech 52-21. Pitt (4-1, 1-0 ACC) intercepted the first two passes by Georgia Tech quarterback Jeff Sims, with linebacker John Petrishen returning the second 33 yards for a touchdown to help the Panthers to a 42-14 lead by halftime. Tech (2-3, 1-2) moved the ball effectively on a couple drives in the first half, but failed to convert any of its five third-down tries and misfired on two fourth downs in that time. Pickett was methodical in completing 23-of-36 passes. On the season, he has passed for 19 touchdowns with just one interception, which wasn't made by Georgia Tech. Pitt has scored at least 41 points in each of its five games, the first such streak in program history. The Panthers are averaging 52.4 points per contest.

Pickett left the game with five minutes remaining, and the Panthers running out the clock. Sims returned to a starting role Saturday, and had some success while completing 23-of-32 passes for 342 yards and two scores. The Jackets mustered little on the ground, however, and leading rusher Jahmyr Gibbs carried 10 times for minus-10 yards. Tech rushed for just 73 yards. Eleven Pitt players caught at least one pass and wide receiver Jordan Addison (six receptions, 117 yards, one touchdown) and Taysir Mack (five receptions, 121 yards, one touchdown) had big days. - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

Kenny Pickett threw for 403 yards and five touchdowns and ran for another in just over a half of work and Pittsburgh finished up nonconference play by drilling New Hampshire 77-7 on Saturday. A week after a stunning upset loss at home to Western Michigan, Pitt (3-1) bounced back by pouncing quickly on the overmatched Wildcats (3-1). Pickett led the way, completing 24 of 28 passes while pushing his touchdown pass total to 15 on the season, two more than he had in 2020. Pickett's 1-yard fourth-down scoring plunge gave him 17 career rushing scores, the most ever by a quarterback in school history.

Jordan Addison caught six passes for 193 yards and three touchdowns for Pitt. The Panthers piled up a school-record 707 yards of total offense and scored on 10 of their first 11 drives. Pitt's 77 points were the program's most in a game since 1926 when the Panthers beat Westminster 88-0. New Hampshire, ranked 22nd in the Football Championship Subdivision, saw any hopes of the school's first win over a Power Five program in 15 years evaporate after falling behind by four touchdowns in the game's first 14 minutes. - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

Kenny Pickett threw for 285 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a score to lead Pittsburgh to a 41-34 victory over Tennessee Saturday. The Panther defense collected five sacks, recovered two fumbles, had an interception and a crucial fourth-quarter goal-line stand to seal their second victory of the season. The Volunteers (1-1) lost the game and a starting quarterback. Joe Milton went down with a lower leg injury after being sacked and losing a fumble early in the second quarter. Hendon Hooker came on to throw for 189 yards, but the mistakes hurt the effort. "(Pickett) is a football player now," Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi said of his quarterback. "I trust in KP. He knows what he's doing on the football field. The guys rally around him." After three straight three-and-out drives, Pitt came up with five straight scores.

The Panthers scored touchdowns on all five trips inside the Tennessee 20-yard line. "That's something we focused on in spring and (preseason) camp, to put touchdowns on the board," Pickett said. Tennessee, known for its uptempo offense, managed 66 plays, compared to 82 for Pitt. The Panthers' biggest play of all came on defense with a fourth-quarter goal-line stand from the Pitt 3 that could have tied the game. Jaylen Wright was stopped cold by John Petrishen. "Talk about the biggest play of the game," said Narduzzi. "Our defense played solid." - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

Kenny Pickett threw for two touchdowns passes and the Pitt defense held Massachusetts to 209 yards of total offense as the Panthers cruised to a 51-7 season-opening victory on Saturday. Pickett linked up with Lucas Krull and Jordan Addison for first-quarter touchdowns as the Panthers jumped out to a two-score lead in the first 15 minutes. The fifth-year senior directed the offense efficiently, completing 27 of 37 passes for 272 yards and the two scores. Pickett also rushed six times for 39 yards on a combination of scrambles and designed runs.

Pickett missed one play after taking a hit late in the second quarter that caused Massachusetts linebacker Gerrell Johnson to be ejected for targeting, and the Pitt offense seemed to feed on the return of its leader. "He's got the heart of a lion," Krull said. "He's a special person. You'd go to war with that guy every day. You see him down, you hate to see it. As a team, we're pissed off, because it's a late hit and we hate seeing that from our quarterback and our leader. But we knew he was going to bounce right back." After taking an early lead, the Panthers leaned on the rushing game, with four different backs finding the end zone. A.J. Davis scored from 18 yards out in the second quarter. In the third, Vincent Davis rushed in from six yards out and Israel Abanikanda scored from 12 yards to extend the lead. - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

When Pickett decided to return for his fifth season, instead of trying his luck in the NFL Draft, Pitt fans felt like they won the lottery. In a strong season for quarterback talent in the ACC, Pickett leads the conference in starts (36, 21-15). He's also climbing the all-time Pitt lists in passing yards (7,984, fifth), total offense (8,552, third), 300-yard games (eight, tied for third) and rushing touchdowns by a quarterback (15, second). "Kenny Pickett's going to be a year better, a year stronger, a year smarter," Narduzzi said.

He also has two targets who weren't available last season - 6-foot-6, 260-pound tight end Lucas Krull and Hawaii transfer Melquise Stovall. Krull was hurt and Stovall caught 49 passes for 480 yards and five touchdowns over the past two seasons. They are in addition to freshman All-American Jordan Addison (60/666/4), Shocky Jacques-Louis, Mack and Jared Wayne, all of whom caught at least 21 balls last season. "I'm not sure I've seen (Addison) drop a ball in a practice," Narduzzi said, "not many in a game and certainly Kenny's favorite target." - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

Despite the return of fifth-year senior quarterback Kenny Pickett and 14 other starters from 2020, Pitt was picked to finish fourth in the seven-team ACC Coastal, according to a preseason poll of 147 media voters. The Panthers did receive one first-place vote, however. North Carolina, the preseason choice to win the Coastal, received 109 first-place votes and 979 total points. Miami (28) was next with 881 points, followed by Virginia Tech (3/582) and Pitt (1/576). The bottom three are Virginia (2/540), Georgia Tech (4/340) and Duke (218).

Overall, the story remains unchanged for the seventh consecutive preseason. Clemson is an overwhelming choice to win its seventh consecutive ACC championship after appearing in the past six College Football Playoffs. Clemson was the pick on 125 ballots. North Carolina received 16 votes, followed by Miami (three) and Georgia Tech, N.C. State and Virginia (one each). - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

Two Pitt players - one on each side of the ball - attracted national attention Monday when quarterback Kenny Pickett and sophomore defensive tackle Calijah Kancey were named to watch lists for the Maxwell Award and Chuck Bednarik Awards. The Maxwell is awarded to the college player of the year; the Bednarik goes to the defensive player of the year. Pickett, who is among 80 players on the Maxwell watch list, is approaching his fifth season at Pitt - he chose to return when he could have made himself available in the NFL Draft - and his fourth as the starting quarterback. With a successful season, Pickett could challenge the Pitt records for total yards (11,148) and passing yards (11,267) set by Alex Van Pelt from 1989-1992. Pickett stands at 8,552 in total yards (third on Pitt's all-time list) and 7,984 passing (fifth). - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

Two weeks after the new legislation took effect, a Pitt athlete signed the school's first known deal of the NIL era. Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett announced on Twitter on Thursday morning that he signed with the Oaklander Hotel and its restaurant Spirits & Tales for his first NIL deal. The Oaklander is a four-and-a-half-star hotel located about a block off Pitt's campus in North Oakland on Bigelow Boulevard. Its restaurant Spirits & Tales is a local brasserie with French-inspired cuisine. While the new laws were passed to help athletes benefit from their own name, image and likeness, Pickett's decision was made with more than just himself in mind. - Pittsburgh Post Gazette

Many factors led quarterback Kenny Pickett back to Pitt for a fifth season. Among them is his relationship with Mark Whipple, who enters his third season at Pitt as the longest-tenured offensive coordinator under coach Pat Narduzzi. "Coach Whipple is like family to me. If he wasn't coming back here, I wouldn't have come back," Pickett said Friday as Pitt made final preparations for the start of spring drills Sunday. "There's a lot of unfinished business. He's a competitor just like I am." He also seriously considered his relationship with teammates and familiarity with the program. He was first introduced to Pitt four years ago when he left Ocean Township (N.J.) High School a half-year early to enroll. "If I didn't love it here so much, it would have been a lot easier to leave, given the position I was in. It was a win-win either way," he said.

Said senior defensive end Deslin Alexandre, who enrolled with Pickett in January, 2017: "He's the heart of this team." Just as important - perhaps, moreso - is Pickett's desire to prove he's a better quarterback than what others might think. "Very close," he said when asked how close he was to declaring for the NFL Draft. "I took my time with it. "Everyone had the idea that I was declaring (for the draft). My friends back home were the only ones who knew I was making a decision because I was stressed about it." - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

Pittsburgh's season is over. Quarterback Kenny Pickett's college career is not. The senior announced late Tuesday night he will return in 2021. Pickett had participated in Pitt's Senior Day festivities against Virginia Tech last month, an indication he was going to enter the NFL draft. Apparently not. "One more year," Pickett tweeted. Pickett passed for 2,408 yards with 13 touchdowns and nine interceptions this season for the Panthers (6-5, 5-5). He missed two games with an ankle injury - both losses - and was up and down when he returned.

Pickett threw for 404 yards in a win over the Hokies but tossed four interceptions in a loss to Clemson before finishing with a touchdown and a pick in a season-ending 34-17 victory over Georgia Tech. The Panthers figured to be in the bowl mix after winning three of their final four games but voted to not participate in the postseason, a decision coach Pat Narduzzi supported after the team spent months playing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Pickett has passed for 7,984 yards with 39 touchdowns and 25 interceptions since taking over as the starter late in the 2017 season. He is fifth on the school's all-time yards passing list and fourth on the total yardage list, passing Hall of Famer Dan Marino late in the season. - AP College Football

While missing two games with a serious ankle injury, Kenny Pickett is 15th in the nation in passing yards (2,003). He is only the fifth player in Pitt history with 8,000 career yards of total offense (8,149), joining Alex Van Pelt, Tino Sunseri, Tyler Palko and Dan Marino. With two games left and 7,579 yards passing, he has a legitimate shot to reach 8,000 through the air. Pickett directed an offense Saturday that amassed 556 yards from scrimmage. Pitt also reached 500 against N.C. State (503). - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

Senior quarterback Kenny Pickett threw for 404 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another in his final start at Heinz Field as shorthanded Pittsburgh rolled past Virginia Tech 47-14 on Saturday night. The Panthers (5-4, 4-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) were missing 16 players due to COVID-19 protocols, a group that included leading receiver Jordan Addison and three starting offensive linemen. It hardly mattered. Relying heavily on short passes designed to take some of the pressure off the patchwork line in front of him, Pickett completed 35 of 52 passes as Pitt won its second straight following a four-game losing streak.

Graduate transfer DJ Turner caught 15 passes - one shy of the school's single-game record - for 184 yards, including a 64-yard touchdown in the third quarter just four plays after the Panthers stuffed Virginia Tech quarterback Hendon Hooker at the goal line. Turner's long catch-and-run pushed Pitt's lead to 33-14 and sent the reeling Hokies (4-5, 4-4) to their fourth loss in five games. A week after having their game against Georgia Tech rescheduled due to COVID-19 protocols and despite missing a significant number of their regulars, the Panthers had little trouble doing whatever they wanted against the Hokies. Virginia Tech, itself missing 12 players because of the same COVID-19 protocols, simply could not keep pace. - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

Kenny Pickett knew he would miss some games with an ankle injury. But he also had a recovery plan and intended to be back in time to face Florida State. His return was just the spark Pittsburgh needed. Nick Patti had two touchdown runs, Pickett added a 10-yard TD run and the Panthers capitalized on short fields to defeat Florida State 41-17 on Saturday night, snapping a four-game losing streak. Pickett returned to the starting lineup after missing two games, losses to top-15 teams Miami and Notre Dame. The senior completed 21 of 27 passes for 210 yards, connecting with freshman Jordan Addison a season-high 11 times for 127 yards.

"I'm just not at 100 percent yet," Pickett said. "I had this game circled after it happened, I kind of knew this was the game where it would come back or at least plan to come back. A credit to our training staff and doctors. I was pretty much living with those guys to this moment. A lot of hard work went into it and it's just great to be back." Pickett said he was watching Florida State film, preparing for this game during the bye last week. With Pitt on the goal line twice in the first half, he yielded to Patti for touchdown runs from 1 and 2 yards for Pittsburgh (4-4, 3-4 Atlantic Coast Conference). But Pickett was efficient and showed little effects from the ankle injury. "Kenny Pickett is a tough, tough son of a gun," Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi said. "I didn't even know if he was going to go or not. He did go and he played hard. Obviously, he had a heavily taped up, braced ankle, but he's my MVP. Our offense ticks when he's out there." - AP College Football

Kenny Pickett didn't play his best at Boston College, but it was no doubt a gutsy performance. The third-year starting quarterback ran 14 times and took some hits, including one that briefly forced him out of the game and into the medical tent. Pickett picked up an apparent ankle injury and returned to the game after two offensive plays and a defensive series. He's "banged up" now, Narduzzi said. But Pickett's health was "a lot better" on Sunday than the coach expected it to be. "The one thing I know about Kenny is he's tough as can be," Narduzzi said. "It's going to be hard to hold him out."

If Pickett is deemed unable to go - or if he re-aggravates the injury at Miami - it'll be either Arizona State transfer Joey Yellen or class of 2019 signee Davis Beville replacing him. When Pickett left the game at Boston College, Yellen entered the game. And when Pickett got the wind knocked out of him against N.C. State, it was Beville who took over for a play. Narduzzi is unsure, though, which quarterback would come in for Pickett at Miami. It's too early in the week to tell. "It depends on how good of a week every quarterback has. Whichever quarterback has the best week will be the guy who comes in," Narduzzi said. "I wish we had a true Number 2 right now, but we don't." - Pittsburgh Post Gazette

Pittsburgh coach Pat Narduzzi watched the Panthers put together a nearly flawless practice last Tuesday, one so close to perfect that Narduzzi admitted he practically had to invent something to complain about. That won't be an issue going forward. While Narduzzi remains high on his team, No. 25 Pitt still has plenty to work on following a sloppy 21-10 win over Syracuse on Saturday. A week removed from a romp against overmatched Austin Peay in the opener, the Panthers (2-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) looked very much like a work in progress against the Orange (0-2, 0-2). Seven penalties, three missed field goals and two turnovers allowed Syracuse to hang around well into the second half before Pitt finally pulled away behind a dominant defensive performance. "It was a lot uglier than I'd like it to be," Narduzzi said. "Disappointed more with just the penalties that we had, just some stuff that you don't expect to have at all."

Stuff Narduzzi told the Panthers "championship teams don't do." Still, it's a lesson Pitt learned in a victory. It certainly beats the alternative. "It was definitely a sloppy game," said Kenny Pickett, who threw for two touchdowns and ran for another score. "Didn't play the kind of football we need to play to go where we want to go. It's almost good that it happened, we persevered." Having one of the best defensive front sevens in the country certainly helps. Pitt limited Syracuse to 171 total yards, 69 of them coming on backup quarterback Rex Culpepper's second-quarter touchdown strike to a streaking Taj Harris. Otherwise, Syracuse mustered very little in the face of an unrelenting pass rush. - AP College Football

Kenny Pickett threw a touchdown pass and ran for another as Pittsburgh scored on each of its first six possessions in its season opener, and raced to a 55-0 victory over Austin Peay at Heinz Field on Saturday. Pickett and offensive coordinator Mark Whipple spread the love around as Pickett threw to seven receivers and six players scored touchdowns during the Panthers' offensive explosion. A Paris Ford interception set up Pitt's first score, a 1-yard Daniel Carter plunge.

Pickett connected with Shocky Jaques-Louis on a 68-yard strike before scrambling into the end zone from six yards out to score on Pitt's second drive. He then connected with wide-open Maryland transfer DJ Turner for a 51-yard score. After that, Whipple turned over the offense to the running game, with Vincent Davis scoring on a one-yard rush, Israel Abanikanda scampering to pay dirt on a 10-yard draw, and Todd Sibley, Jr. plunging in from one yard out on Pitt's three second-quarter possessions. Pickett finished 14 of 20 for 277 yards. Freshman Jordan Addison was his most frequent target, hauling in seven catches for 35 yards. The Pitt defense pitched its first shutout since 2014, holding the Governors to 146 yards of total offense and 10 yards rushing. - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

Mark Richt has watched Kenny Pickett's career at Pitt with special interest. After all, he was there when it started. And the memory is one he'd prefer to forget. Richt was the coach at Miami in 2017, undefeated and ranked second in the nation. Pickett was a first-year freshman, with zero starts. "We go to Pitt," said Richt, now an analyst on the ACC Network after 18 seasons as the head coach at Georgia and Miami. "Pitt's like 4-7 or something at the moment. We go in there and get our butts beat (24-14) and he plays his tail off. "Just a gutsy performance, throwing and running the football (253 total yards and three touchdowns) and taking some shots and getting up and showing his teammates his physical and mental toughness.

"I like Pickett. I don't like what he did that day, but I do think he's a very good player. I think he's very tough-minded." Richt said Pickett and Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi are a perfect match. "Coach Narduzzi is a tough coach, period," Richt said. "Defensive-minded guy, hard-nosed guy. He doesn't pull any punches. I think Kenny Pickett is the right quarterback for him. Some guys aren't able to handle that type of coaching." - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

Kenny Pickett threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Taysir Mack with 47 seconds left and Pittsburgh held on to beat Eastern Michigan 34-30 in the Quick Lane Bowl on Thursday night. After taking its first lead of the game, Pittsburgh (8-5) then forced Eastern Michigan (6-7) to turn it over on downs from its 40. That sealed Pitt's first bowl victory in five appearances under coach Pat Narduzzi. The Eagles came up just short in a closely contested game just as they did in three previous bowls under coach Chris Creighton. Eastern Michigan quarterback Mike Glass was ejected with 10 seconds left after throwing punches at two players. Eagles cornerback Kevin McGill was ejected earlier for unsportsmanlike conduct. Glass was 28 of 50 for 311 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. The senior also ran for 83 yards and a score. Pickett completed 27 of 39 passes for 361 yards and three scores, including a school-record, 96-yard TD pass to Maurice Ffrench. Ffrench finished with 12 catches for 165 yards, most of which came on the tying score in the second quarter. - AP College Football

Kenny Pickett threw for 359 yards and a touchdown and ran for a pair of scores - including a 3-yard burst on the opening possession of overtime - as Pittsburgh held off North Carolina 34-27 on Thursday night to pick up its first win over the Tar Heels since joining the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2013. The Panthers (7-3, 4-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) kept their hopes of a second straight Coastal Division title alive when Pickett darted into the end zone to start overtime and the defense followed by forcing North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell to throw incomplete on fourth-and-16.

Pickett completed 25 of 41 passes and ran 12 times for 53 yards as Pitt ended a six-game losing streak to the Tar Heels (4-6, 3-4). Sophomore wide receiver Shocky Jacques-Louis caught three passes for 96 yards and a touchdown. Howell finished 27 of 43 for 322 yards with three touchdowns and an interception for North Carolina as the Tar Heels rallied twice in the fourth quarter to force overtime.   Kenny Pickett threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns, one of them coming on a trick play to put Pittsburgh ahead for good, and the Panthers held off Syracuse 27-20 on Friday night for their fourth straight win. Pittsburgh (5-2, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) had won its previous three, by a combined seven points, and two of those victories came in the final minute. This one was different until the end, with the Panthers gaining a 24-6 halftime lead and keeping the Orange at bay despite a tense final 2 minutes.

Clayton Welch hit Aaron Hackett for a 7-yard touchdown with 2:44 left to move the Orange within striking distance, and the Panthers averted a meltdown after Vincent Davis lost a fumble but was ruled down with under 2 minutes left deep in his own territory. Syracuse (3-4, 0-3), which had lost only once in their previous nine games in the Carrier Dome, is the only team in the ACC's Atlantic Division without a conference win. Pitt, which has won 15 of the past 18 games in the series, converted six of 10 third downs in the first half, the defense registered six sacks, and that trick play sent the Panthers on the way to victory. The Panthers entered the game ranked second in the nation in sacks with an average of 4.50 per game (27) and finished with nine, the most in a game since 2001. - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

Kenny Pickett threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to V'Lique Carter with 38 seconds remaining, and Pittsburgh rallied to beat Duke 33-30 on Saturday night after wasting a 23-point lead. Pickett finished 29 of 48 for 268 yards with three touchdown passes to help the Panthers (4-2, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) claim a wild victory - their fifth straight in this Coastal Division series - after the teams combined for 10 total turnovers with each scoring TDs in the final 90 seconds.

Pitt led 26-3 with less than 3 minutes left in the third quarter, only to have the Blue Devils turn three straight turnovers into touchdowns and then take a 30-26 lead on Quentin Harris' 44-yard touchdown pass to Deon Jackson with 1:30 remaining. Pickett needed just four plays to put the Panthers back in front. He found Carter over the middle and the Pitt running back got past defensive back Marquis Waters with a spin move on his way to the end zone. Patrick Jones II then sacked Harris on the third play of Duke's next drive, jarring the ball loose, and Phil Campbell III recovered it with 22 seconds to play. Harris finished 18 of 43 for 165 yards with two rushing touchdowns for the Blue Devils (3-2, 1-1). But he had five of Duke's six turnovers - two interceptions and a fumble during a four-play span of the first quarter, plus a third-quarter fumble in addition to the game-sealer. - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Mark Whipple installed the play he dubbed "Pitt Special" during the second week of training camp. Whipple had his first-stringers run it once against the starting defense and it worked. So he made sure the Panthers practiced it during Thursday walkthroughs and tucked it in his back pocket just in case. Just in case arrived late Saturday afternoon with Pitt trailing 15th-ranked UCF by six and a minute to go. Facing fourth-and-2 at the UCF 3, an official came over and told Whipple the Panthers could still get a first down if they got to the 1. "Nah, we're going to score," Whipple said. In way that could prove to be the turning point in Pitt's season. UCF's, too.

Running back A.J. Davis took a direct snap from center, ran to his left and flipped the ball to Aaron Mathews, who was heading right. Matthews, a former high school quarterback, thought he might have to make a run at the pylon. When two UCF defenders closed in, Mathews pulled up and found quarterback Kenny Pickett in the end zone, giving the Panthers a euphoric 35-34 victory. "Kenny claims he has the best hands on the team," Mathews said with a smile. "He's one for one." One very big one. On a day Pickett threw for 224 yards and a score and added 61 on the ground despite exiting for a couple of series late in the third quarter after bruising his right (throwing) shoulder, his heady decision to find a spot in the UCF zone defense and wait for the ball ended UCF's 25-game regular-season winning streak. UCF had won 27 of its last 28 overall, including the Knights' American Athletic Conference championship game victories the last two years along with their Fiesta Bowl loss to LSU last year. - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett deleted most of his social media accounts before the season as a way to help him stay focused amid all the noise. So he didn't know and didn't particularly care about the reaction to his uneven performance in an opening loss to Virginia. Instead, Pickett kept doing what he's done since the moment he arrived on campus more than 2½ years ago: he kept grinding, confident the protection issues in front of him and the accuracy issues that plagued him against the Cavaliers would work themselves out. For the most part in an orderly 20-10 win over Ohio on Saturday, they did.

Working behind a line that appeared to improve by the snap, Pickett passed for a career-high 321 yards, including a 74-yard touchdown to Maurice Ffrench that gave Pitt (1-1) an early 10-point lead it never came close to squandering. A week after hitting on barely half of his 41 attempts while getting sacked four times, Pickett hit on 26 of 37 passes and was taken down just once. "I just think we executed better all around, not just me," Pickett said. "The offensive line blocked great. Receivers got open. Everything was just clicking." Ffrench finished with 10 receptions for 138 yards, both career bests. A.J. Davis ran for 89 yards for Pitt and Vincent Davis added 50 on the ground, including his first career touchdown that put the Panthers up 17-0 midway through the second quarter. - AP College Football
