SEPT 19 BIG 12 SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Oklahoma State's Trace Ford blocked UAPB's first punt attempt of the game and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown in the opening quarter of Oklahoma State's 63-7 win. It was the first punt blocked for a touchdown by the Cowboys since Sept. 15, 2018, against Boise State. The junior DE was also credited with a quarterback hurry and a third-down pass breakup. OSU ranks second among FBS teams with 30 blocked kicks since the beginning of the 2013 season. After returning a blocked kick and punt for touchdowns in the game, the Cowboys are tied for first in the FBS in non-offensive touchdowns since the beginning of the 2020 season with 11. - Big 12 Football

Nebraska fired Scott Frost on Sunday, the situation so dire in the once-proud football program that athletic director Trev Alberts made the move only three weeks before the coach's contract buyout would have been cut in half. The Cornhuskers lost 45-42 to Georgia Southern as a three-touchdown favorite at home Saturday night, and the student section chanted “Fire Frost" at the end of the game. Frost was 16-31 three games into his fifth season, and his .340 winning percentage was second-worst among Nebraska coaches who lasted more than four years. Associate head coach Mickey Joseph was named interim coach for the rest of the season. The Huskers play No. 6 Oklahoma at home this week.

Joseph, 54, is the first Black head coach at Nebraska in any sport and among four new members of the staff this season. Like Frost, he is a former Nebraska quarterback, having played from 1988-91. "Earlier today I met with Coach Frost and informed him we were making a change in the leadership of our football program, effective immediately," Alberts said in a statement. "Scott has poured his heart and soul into the Nebraska football program both as a quarterback and a head coach, and I appreciate his work and dedication. After the disappointing start to our season, I decided the best path forward for our program was to make a change in our head coaching position." Joseph returned to Nebraska as wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator after coaching receivers at LSU from 2017-21. He also was LSU's assistant head coach his last two seasons there. Alberts made a surprising move last November when he announced he would bring back Frost after what turned out to be a 3-9 season. Frost fired four offensive assistants, had his pay cut from $5 million to $4 million and agreed to having his buyout drop from $15 million to $7.5 million on Oct. 1. - AP College Football

Marvin Mims caught seven passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns to help No. 7 Oklahoma overcome a slow start in a 33-3 victory over Kent State on Saturday night. Dillon Gabriel completed 21 of 28 passes for 296 yards and three touchdowns, and the Sooners finished with 430 yards of offense. Oklahoma has won 11 straight home games and 29 of its last 30. Oklahoma (2-0) was scoreless and trailed Kent State (0-2) as late as the final minute of the first half before Mims played key roles on touchdown drives to end the half and start the second. That helped the Sooners move to 4-0 against current Mid-American Conference teams.

Collin Schlee passed for 131 yards and rushed for 55 yards for Kent State, which is the only Football Bowl Subdivision team this season playing three nonconference games against opponents from Power 5 conferences. The Golden Flashes lost their opener at Washington and will visit No. 2 Georgia in two weeks. Kent State played the Sooners on even terms in the first half and Oklahoma was fortunate to be ahead 7-3. The Golden Flashes had 11 first downs to Oklahoma's seven and limited the Sooners to only 7 rushing yards before halftime. To that point, Kent State had converted on six of 11 3rd-down attempts and owned a two-to-one edge in time of possession. - Oklahoma/AP College Football

All of the pieces were there for Nebraska's offense early in the game against Northwestern. A clean pocket? Check. Quick, accurate passes from Casey Thompson? Check. Tough yards on the ground when they needed it? Check. But, the challenge in all of those arenas is doing it consistently for all four quarters, something that failed Nebraska's offense in a 31-28 loss to Northwestern on Saturday. Head coach Scott Frost turned over play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Mark Whipple, and a pass-heavy opening drive might have been the result of Whipple's typical offensive system. However, second-half struggles led to an interesting response from Frost after the game. "I think we're going to have to learn as an offensive staff that you have to be a little creative in this league," Frost said. "So, we have some things that we can work on. I thought we did a lot of good things, but it's got to be more of a complete game."

In the run-heavy Big Ten, creativity can mean finding the right moments to pound the rock and the right moments to air it out. When the pocket held up, Thompson showcased the arm talent that helped him land NU's starting job in the offseason. Thompson completed eight passes to Trey Palmer and six to tight end Travis Vokolek, who would have played a big role in the second half if he wasn't forced from the game due to an injury. Thompson's pair of fourth-quarter interceptions were certainly game-changers, but so was a controversial fumble call on Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda. The wideout appeared to have a knee down at the same time a Northwestern defender ripped the ball out, and a video review upheld the call of a fumble on the field. - Lincoln Journal Star

Casey Thompson will start as quarterback for Nebraska's season opener in Ireland, NU coach Scott Frost announced Thursday night on his monthly radio show. "Casey's going to be the guy," Frost said on the Huskers Radio Network while complimenting the other four scholarship QBs on the roster including backup Chubba Purdy and Logan Smothers. Frost said he "wouldn't be surprised" if more than one plays. But it's the high-profile transfer from Texas who will get the first rep overseas against Northwestern. Thompson threw 24 touchdowns last season for the Longhorns. He's the most experienced QB on the roster, and he's had the edge since arriving for spring camp. His accuracy and velocity improved after a surgery on his hand this summer; Thompson played the last half of UT's season with torn ligaments. "There's no substitute for having played a lot of college football and there's been fewer mistakes from him," Frost said. "It really was a big jump too from spring ball to fall and I think that thumb was probably bothering him worse than he let on. He's throwing it way better now in fall. He threw it well in spring but he's got a lot of zip on it now." - Lincoln Journal Star

Oklahoma safeties coach Brandon Hall describes Billy Bowman as a "quiet guy." But make no mistake, that doesn't mean he's not a competitive guy. While Hall, of course, sees that competitiveness on the football field, there isn't really a place he doesn't see it. "Coming over to the house, playing basketball - just anything outside of football, you start to pick up that [this] dude is always playing to win," Hall said during OU media day earlier this month. "It's not just in the weight room and stuff." Bowman's coaches and teammates have seen it, too. Among all of the players that have been discussed during the spring and fall camp, Bowman's name has been mentioned by his teammates almost more than any other.

Bowman's certainly confident entering this season. The sophomore safety enters the 2022-23 season as a projected starter on the Sooners' defense with the potential of being one of the team's biggest impact players. "I definitely felt like last season I lost some confidence," Bowman said. "But I feel like this year, [I've been able] to gain that confidence back with the new coaches coming in. During spring ball, I definitely feel like I gained my confidence back and I'm ready to go." Bowman entered last season as the starter at nickleback, assuming the starting role for five of the team's first six games. He then saw playing time at cornerback but struggled, and his playing time diminished as the season continued. He finished the season with 21 tackles, including two for a loss, in eight games. - Norman Transcript

  08/18/22 - T.D. RoofrSr/2023, Oklahoma + More +

Linebacker T.D. Roof will miss the 2022 OU football season after suffering a biceps injury that will require surgery, head coach Brent Venables said Tuesday. Roof, the son of defensive coordinator Ted Roof, transferred from Appalachian State after his father joined Venables' staff in the offseason. Roof has played in 45 career games during his career at Appalachian State, Indiana and Georgia Tech.

Venables said it hasn't been decided whether or not Roof would pursue a medical redshirt to play next season. "We'll look at what all the options are," Venables said. "He's been through a lot, been at multiple schools and nothing's been easy for him. We'll see. We'll give him all kinds of opportunity based on where his heart is and after cooler heads sometimes prevail. We'll give him another day or two to figure all that out." While Roof was unlikely to be a starter, he was expected to be in the mix for playing time and likely contribute on special teams also. Venables said Roof's injury is the only significant one so far in camp. - Daily Oklahoman

Daniel Parker didn't hesitate. "I'll do it," Parker responded when Missouri coaches asked him during preseason camp in 2018 to make the move from defensive end to tight end. Parker knew that his path to playing time as a freshman might be faster on the offense. But Parker had never played tight end before making the switch four years ago. "He didn't realize how early and how often he was going to have to play," said Joe Jon Finley, Missouri's tight ends coach at the time. Now, Finley is OU's tight ends coach and Parker is a tight end for the Sooners after transferring in the offseason.

"We had that connection," Parker said of Finley. "He knows what I'm about. I know what he's about. It was just good to get back with him." Brayden Willis, with 45 career games played and 12 starts, figures to be OU's primary tight end this season but Parker's varying skill set figures to give him a place among the group. "He brings the mindset that just gives you chills when you think about old-school football," Finley said. "We're going to be physical, and that's the part he absolutely loves. He can go out and catch the ball...He couldn't come here at a better time fitting in with the mindset of Coach (Brent) Venables of being physical, fast and playing extremely hard. He's a picture of that." - Daily Oklahoman

Oklahoma enters the season in a familiar spot. The Sooners landed at No. 9 in the Associated Press' preseason poll, the outlet announced Monday. It's the seventh straight season the Sooners are ranked inside the Top 10 in the poll and the 19th time in the past 22 seasons. Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, Clemson and Notre Dame took the top five spots, respectively. Alabama defeated Ohio State in the national championship game last season. Oklahoma is the highest ranked Big 12 team in the poll, one spot ahead of Baylor (No. 10) and three spots ahead of Oklahoma State (No. 12). Texas and Kansas State received votes but did not make the poll. This marks the 23rd straight season the Sooners are ranked inside the Top 25 entering the season, which is the second-longest streak behind Ohio State (34). Of Oklahoma's 64 appearances in the poll, the Sooners have been ranked inside the top 10 48 times. - Norman Transcript

He's the highest ranked recruit in program history, and Dasan McCullough might be ready to make a splash in year one. At the very least, McCullough made an impression on the Big Ten Network crew that was in Bloomington on Friday for the team's first scrimmage. The son of former running backs coach Deland McCullough, it wasn't clear where on the field Indiana would try to plug in the Bloomington High School South product. He was originally thought of as a safety, but after he grew to 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, McCullough could be either a linebacker or a stand-up defensive end in college. Based on what the BTN crew saw on Friday, it sounds like McCullough could be training at least in part for the latter, and a position the IU program calls the "bull" in head coach Tom Allen's 4-2-5 scheme. "There was a player on the defensive line, McCullough, that really caught our eye," BTN's Joshua Perry said.

Indiana struggled to get pressure on the quarterback last year, and McCullough gave the impression on Friday that he may be someone who can change that in 2022. BTN's Howard Griffith broke into the smile of someone who had just witnessed a special player on the football field. "What jumps out immediately is the body type. He's long, can really rush the passer," Griffith said of McCullough. "He's gonna spend some more time in the weight room because he's young. But I think he's going to develop, and when you talk about him being an elite pass rusher, I think he has that skill set in him. He's gonna be one of those guys that they might not have thought was going to be a huge contributor on the defensive line, but it looks like he's going to be a big part of the packages that they run." - The Daily Hoosier
