Nebraska has signed Matt Rhule to an eight-year contract to be the Cornhuskers' next football coach, the school announced Saturday. The 47-year-old Rhule has been out of work for less than two months since getting fired by the Carolina Panthers. One of eight Football Bowl Subdivision programs with at least 900 wins but more than 20 years removed from its 1990s heyday, Nebraska is pinning its hopes on Rhule to recreate his success at his previous two college stops. Rhule took over struggling programs at Temple and Baylor and built them into conference contenders in three years. He was 11-27 with Carolina and left with about $40 million remaining on the seven-year, guaranteed $62 million contract he signed in 2020. The contract made Rhule the sixth-highest paid coach in the NFL when he signed in 2020, according to Forbes. Nebraska did not release terms of Rhule's contract. He will be introduced at a news conference Monday. - AP College Football

Casey Thompson threw for three touchdowns, and Nebraska ruined Iowa's chance to clinch the Big Ten West Division title outright with a 24-17 win on Friday. The Huskers (4-8, 3-6 Big Ten) snapped a five-game losing streak, and broke a seven-game losing streak to the Hawkeyes (7-5, 5-4). Iowa had its four-game winning streak snapped. Thompson threw touchdown passes of 87 and 18 yards to Trey Palmer in the first half and a 14-yarder to Marcus Washington in the third quarter as Nebraska built a 24-0 lead. Iowa had a chance to tie the game in the closing minutes, getting the ball twice in the last 3:20 after closing to within 24-17 on a 45-yard field goal by Drew Stevens. But backup quarterback Alex Padilla threw incomplete on fourth down on the first possession. Nebraska linebacker Chris Kolarevic's interception with 42 seconds left completed the Huskers' win.

The Hawkeyes need losses by Purdue and Illinois on Saturday to have a chance at back-to-back West Division titles. Thompson completed 20 of 30 passes for 278 yards. Palmer had nine catches for 165 yards. Iowa lost starting quarterback Spencer Petras to an injury in the first quarter after he was hit and lost a fumble. The turnover led to Timmy Bleekrode's 21-yard field goal and a 10-0 Huskers lead. Padilla also lost a fumble that led to Nebraska's second touchdown. Kaleb Johnson, who rushed for 109 yards, gave the Hawkeyes their first score with a 44-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Padilla threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Luke Lachey in the fourth quarter. Padilla completed 16 of 33 passes for 141 yards. - Nebraska/AP College Football

OCT 31 BIG 12 CO-SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Michael Turk, OU, P, Sr.,...Turk averaged 49.3 yards on his six punts and became Oklahoma's first full-time punter since 1970 to throw a touchdown pass in OU's 27-13 win at Iowa State. The TD pass came on a fake field goal attempt as Turk, the holder, flipped the ball to kicker Zach Schmit, who ran the ball in from two yards out to give OU a 10-3 second-quarter lead. As a punter, the senior was particularly effective in the fourth quarter, booming 61- and 60-yarders to flip the field with the Sooners holding on to a seven-point lead. The 60-yard punt was downed at the two-yard line, and OU's defense registered takeaways on both ensuing ISU possessions. Turk leads the Big 12 and ranks sixth nationally with his 45.8-yard punt average this season. - Big 12 Football

  10/29/22 - Eric GraySr/2023, Oklahoma + More +

Eric Gray rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown, and the Oklahoma defense posted three interceptions and the Sooners defeated Iowa State 27-13 on Saturday. A pick by linebacker Danny Stutsman came with 5:24 left in the fourth quarter and set up a 2-yard scoring run by Gray to seal the game for Oklahoma (5-3, 2-3 Big 12). It was the fifth straight loss for Iowa State (3-5, 0-5). The previous four defeats had been by a total of 14 points. Oklahoma used a little trickery to get its first touchdown. The Sooners were lined up for a 19-yard field goal late in the first quarter, but holder Michael Turk flipped the ball to kicker Zach Schmit as he ran past.

Schmit's 2-yard touchdown reception put Oklahoma up 10-3 early in the second quarter. He hit two field goals and an extra point before halftime, accounting for all of the Sooners' first 13 points. Oklahoma's second touchdown was more traditional, a 41-yard pass from Dillon Gabriel to Jalil Farooq in the third quarter. Iowa State answered with a 12 play, 53-yard touchdown drive - converting two fourth-and-long situations - with 10:29 left in the fourth quarter, trimming the margin to 20-13. The Cyclones' next two possessions ended with interceptions, including Stutsman's pick. Hunter Dekkers finished 37-for-57 passing for 312 yards and a touchdown to go along with the three picks. - Oklahoma/AP College Football

In his first game back from concussion protocol, Dillon Gabriel appeared to have a goal. Find Marvin Mims, and get him the ball. The junior wide receiver was targeted 16 times by Gabriel in their last outing against Kansas. Mims made the most of his opportunities, turning his targets into a career-high nine receptions for 106 yards. Mims accounted for 31 percent of Gabriel's completions, 38 percent of his attempts and 26 percent of his passing yards. After the game, Mims said he wasn't sure if he'd ever been targeted that many times during his collegiate career. Against Kansas, it was a concerted effort to keep him heavily involved. "You've got to give [Mims] the ball," said OU tight end Brayden Willis, who also finished with more than 100 receiving yards.

"He's so explosive, he's so fast, he does such great things with the ball in his hand. and he also does great things without the ball in his hand. He does a great job of blocking if anybody ever catches it. Getting him involved is imperative. "He makes the offense go and everybody kind of goes off of him. He gets a lot of receptions, they start paying attention to him and other guys can get in as well. So it's imperative that we get him going and involved early." It was another example of how Mims has been the Sooners' clear-cut No. 1 receiver in what has been a career season for him. He leads the team in receptions (32), yards (542) and yards per catch (16.94) while adding five touchdowns. He also leads the team in targets with 57. Willis is second on the team in targets with 32. He's already tied his catch total from last season, and he's on pace to far surpass his 37-reception campaign from 2020. - Norman Transcript

Casey Thompson threw for two touchdowns and ran for another and Nebraska beat a Football Bowl Subdivision opponent for the first time in 364 days with a 35-21 victory over Indiana on Saturday night. Thompson, benched for a series in the first half and shaken up on a big hit in the third quarter, threw a 71-yard touchdown pass to Trey Palmer early in the fourth to break a 21-all tie and followed with a 1-yard run to give the Cornhuskers a two-score cushion. The win ended a nine-game losing streak against Bowl Subdivision opponents - the Huskers' previous one was against Northwestern on October 2, 2021 - and was Mickey Joseph's first since he was named interim head coach following the firing of Scott Frost on Sept. 11. The Huskers (2-3, 1-1 Big Ten) broke open the game in the fourth quarter as Thompson came through with big plays during what had been an up-and-down performance. Palmer had a couple steps on Phillip Dunnam as he ran his post pattern on a third-and-9 and caught the ball in stride for a 28-21 lead with 13:43 left. The play gave Palmer the first 100-yard receiving game of his career. The fourth-year player, who transferred from LSU after last season, finished with eight catches for 157 yards.

After Indiana (3-2, 1-1) went three-and-out, Thompson led a 12-play, 54-yard drive that chewed more than six minutes off the clock. He completed three short passes and handed off to Anthony Grant seven times for 31 yards before he ran in for the final margin. Grant finished with 136 yards on 32 carries. Thompson gave the Huskers a scare in the third quarter when he held his right shoulder area after James Head Jr. put a big hit on him. Chubba Purdy, whose fumble in the end zone led to an Indiana touchdown in the first half, took over for one play on the next series and then Thompson returned. Thompson was 18 of 27 for 270 yards with an interception to go with his two TD passes. Indiana's Connor Bazelak was 22 of 44 for 223 yards with a touchdown and interception. The teams combined for 23 penalties for 202 yards, one of the most flag-filled FBS games of the season. - Nebraska/AP College Football

Spencer Rattler threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score in South Carolina's 50-10 victory over South Carolina State in a game moved from Saturday to Thursday night because of Hurricane Ian. Rattler finished with 212 yards, completing 21 of 27 passes including a 5-yard scoring strike to tailback MarShawn Lloyd and an 11-yarder to tight end Austin Stogner, his teammate at Oklahoma, to help South Carolina (3-2) rout the FCS Bulldogs (1-3). Administrators at both schools agreed to the change because of the hurricane's approach. Ian moved through Florida into the Atlantic and was expected to re-enter land in the Palmetto State as a Category 1 storm Friday.

Many parking areas were half-filled at best and the normal, Southeastern Conference-style tailgating setups were absent for this one. South Carolina said 61,551 were at Williams-Brice Stadium, which lists a capacity of 77,559. But the upper decks were largely empty and it wasn't a stretch to think only about the announced crowd came out. The Gamecocks overcame a sluggish start, including two interceptions off Rattler's receivers' hands, to take control in the opening half. The Gamecocks broke through on Rattler's first-quarter TD toss to Lloyd, which was followed by a funky, "swinging gate" formation on a successful two-point conversion by defensive lineman Tonka Hemingway. South Carolina pulled out the wishbone on its next touchdown, a 1-yard handoff to versatile tight end Jaheim Bell. Rattler ran his way to a score from 6 yards out with 37 seconds left in the half to put Gamecocks up 22-0. South Carolina State of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference had more penalty yards than offensive yards, 112 to 83, in the first 30 minutes. - South Carolina/AP College Football

SEPT 26 BIG 12 CO-DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Texas Tech's Reggie Pearson set a season-high with five tackles while also recording an interception and recovering a key fumble in overtime to help Texas Tech to a come-from-behind 37-34 victory over No. 22 Texas. The defensive back intercepted Texas quarterback Hudson Card early in the second quarter, returning it 20 yards into UT territory. However, Pearson's biggest play came in overtime as he fell on a UT fumble, ending the Longhorns' possession on their first play. The Red Raiders responded with a field goal to secure their second top-25 victory this season. Texas Tech limited Texas to 154 yards of total offense in the second half en route to overcoming a 14-point deficit, its second-largest all-time in the series versus the Longhorns. - Big 12 Football
