Kyren Williams ran for 112 yards and two touchdowns in his first start, grad quarterback Ian Book threw for 263 yards and No. 10 Notre Dame beat Duke 27-13 on Saturday at rainy Notre Dame Stadium in the season and Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams. The speedy Williams, who saw limited action last season as a freshman, had 19 carries and also was Notre Dame's leading receiver with two receptions for 93 yards, one a 75-yarder in the first half. The victory was Notre Dame's 19th straight at home and the first for the Fighting Irish in a conference after 132 years as an independent. Because of COVID-19, the Irish are playing this season as a member of the ACC.

The school announced a crowd of 10,097, 90% of them students, attended the game in the 77,622-seat stadium where fans were wearing masks and socially distanced because of the pandemic. The triumph also came on a day when the school announced a four-year contract extension for coach Brian Kelly, who is now 9-2 in openers at Notre Dame. Book outdueled Duke grad quarterback Chase Brice, who threw for 259 yards on 20-of-37 passing and rushed for a touchdown in his debut for coach David Cutcliffe after transferring in from Clemson. Book, who rushed for 139 yards and passed for 181 yards and four touchdowns last season in Notre Dame's 38-7 victory at Duke, completed 19 of 31 passes, one a 17-yard TD pass to Avery Davis early in the fourth quarter that increased the Irish lead to 24-13. He rushed for just 12 yards on nine carries. - AP College/Notre Dame Football

Irish quarterback Ian Book had four passing touchdowns last season in Notre Dame's 38-7 win over Duke in Durham, but hurt the Blue Devils as much with his legs than his arm. Book rushed 12 times for 139 yards, the most for a Notre Dame QB since 1996. By year's end, he was the first Irish quarterback to pass for 2,500 yards, rush for 500 and have 30 TD passes in a season. Book is back. A graduate student, he will be in his third year as the starter. "He's very good at keeping plays alive," Duke safety Michael Carter II said Tuesday. "He's difficult to tackle but we've got to put the pressure on him and be aggressive." - Duke Chronicle

In Saturday's season opener against Duke (2:30 p.m. EDT on NBC), 6-foot-4, 219-pound free safety Kyle Hamilton will roam the secondary alongside 5-foot-9, 180-pound strong safety Shaun Crawford. Despite head coach Brian Kelly repeatedly mentioning Crawford at safety throughout the preseason, the reality of him stepping into the starting lineup at the position to start his sixth season at Notre Dame finally set in with Monday's depth chart release. Crawford, a cornerback for most of his career, worked at safety last preseason too. He was always a reserve option with secondary experience at a position that lacked depth. But the 2020 roster appeared to have other answers at the safety position with junior Houston Griffith settling into the position after switching from cornerback too and Ohio State grad transfer Isaiah Pryor joining the program. Crawford's emergence will keep them waiting. "We didn't come into camp expecting (Crawford) to win it," Kelly said. "We came into camp expecting him to be a placeholder at that position. He came out and won that position. We are a better football team with Shaun playing the position." - South Bend Tribune

Left alone to stew in the darkness of his abrupt free fall into an afterthought last fall, Kyren Williams doubled down on who he believed he could be in a Notre Dame uniform someday. In the weeks and months that followed, the now-Notre Dame sophomore running back even managed to exceed his own lofty expectations. On Tuesday during a Zoom conference call with the media, Irish head coach Brian Kelly let the college football world know just how much Williams had exceeded them. "Kyren Williams has really emerged as somebody we feel right now has gained an advantage as the top back right now," Kelly said of a player who had all of five touches as a freshman in 2019 and none after game 2 of that season. "He's going to require, obviously, some assistance at that position from a number of other guys. We're not just going to feature one back. But Kyren's done a great job."

Williams gives Notre Dame a better version of himself than the Irish saw at any time from him as an early enrollee, and an impressive one at that in the time leading up to the 2019 season. He had bulked up to 204 pounds after his senior season in high school, figuring he'd need the extra bulk to absorb the punishing blows from college defenders, and was pushing 210 on his 5-9 frame when he first met up with Stanfield in the spring. "He's in the 193-195 range now," Stanfield said. "But the biggest difference in who he was and who he is now is speed. Straight-line speed. He always had the agility to make people miss, but now he can run away from them, too." - South Bend Tribune

Notre Dame declared Isaiah Robertson as medically disqualified earlier this month. On Tuesday, the former Irish wide receiver entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal. Robertson, a senior, told the Tribune he is seeking a graduate transfer and is on pace to graduate from Notre Dame in December. He said he's uncertain if his medical disqualification will make the transfer process more complicated, but he wants to get his name out there for other colleges. Notre Dame didn't disclose Robertson's injury when it announced his medical disqualification Aug. 12. Robertson did not answer a question sent to him via text message about his injury either. If Robertson can work out a graduate transfer, he could have multiple years of eligibility remaining. He qualified for a redshirt in 2019 by not playing in any games and won't play again this season. The NCAA Division I board of directors also voted last Friday to give all fall sport athletes an additional year of eligibility and an additional year to complete it with a blanket waiver. - South Bend Tribune
