  08/09/22 - Ochaun MathisrSr/2023, Nebraska, 6-5, 250 (DS#34 DE) + More +

It was no question that two-time All-Big 12 second-team edge rusher Ochaun Mathis was going to stand out when he got to Nebraska, but even more than having "elite talent" and being "just a great guy," Frost said, is how he's been getting the play of everyone around him to step up. And that includes Garrett Nelson, as well as Caleb Tannor and Blaise Gunnerson. "Maybe the best thing getting Ochaun here is I've really seen [the edge rushers'] games step up," Frost said. "I don't know if him getting added to the equation motivated them or not. Maybe they'd have been doing the same thing but it's great to watch those guys work. That's a position I feel great about because of the depth and the talent that we have." - Lincoln Journal Star

2022 PRESEASON PATRICK MANNELLY AWARD WATCHLIST: Marco Ortiz, Florida,...Ortiz is one of 25 players and one of two from the SEC (Wesley Schelling, Vanderbilt) to earn the preseason recognition. Phil Steele also named him Preseason All-American Fourth Team and Phil Steele All-SEC First Team as he didn't record a muffed snap all last year. Last season the native of Richmond, Va. earned the starting long snapping duties this season and was placed on scholarship following the Tennessee game. A three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll member, Ortiz earned his bachelor's degree in degree in Health Education and Behavior this past spring. - Florida Football

2022 PRESEASON CHUCK BEDNARIK AWARD WATCH LIST: Luke Reimer, Nebraska, Junior LB,...A Lincoln native, Reimer is coming off a 2021 season when he started every game and became the first Husker in three years to record 100 tackles in a season. He led Nebraska with 108 tackles in 2021 with 6.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, six pass breakups and one interception. He had double-digit tackles in five of Nebraska's 12 games last season, including a career-high 19 against Purdue, the highest tackle total by a Husker in a Big Ten Conference game. Reimer ranked in the top 30 nationally last season in tackles and forced fumbles per game, as he forced three fumbles in 2021. He enters the 2022 season with 159 career tackles, the most of any current Husker. - Nebraska Football

  08/03/22 - Colton FeistrSr/2024, Nebraska, 6-2, 275 (DS#999 DT) + More +

Ty Robinson says junior defensive lineman (and Yutan native) Colton Feist has always been an impressive player. He's just been stuck behind bigger ones. This fall, however, Robinson thinks Feist is going to "get his shot" at a role. Feist is, in Robinson's words, "a sleeper" with some of the best fundamentals in his position group. "And he's just really got that motor," Robinson said. "Being from Nebraska, I know it means a lot more to him playing on the Huskers." - Lincoln Journal Star

  08/02/22 - Caleb TannorrSr/2023, Nebraska, 6-3, 237 (DS#85 OLB) + More +

For the first time in several years, Caleb Tannor was ready to talk. The veteran edge rusher has been a key part of Nebraska's pass rush efforts for the last four seasons, but he hasn't always been one of the vocal leaders on that front. In a rare appearance at Friday's post-practice news conference, Tannor explained what had changed. "I told them boys that I'm not doing (any) interviews until we started winning some games," Tannor said. "… I've been here four or five years and it's about that time to go to a bowl game. "I feel like I've matured off the field and off the field; when I realized it was bigger than me, that's when everything changed." It's clear from Tannor's demeanor - he's ready to play a much bigger role as a leader in 2022.

He's totaled 82 tackles and 7 1/2 sacks over his four-year Husker career, and NU is seeking an even bigger contribution than the 33 tackles and two sacks he provided a year ago. In a talented edge rusher group, defensive coordinator Erik Chinander sees Tannor as one of his top options. "Last year in camp I think we saw a glimpse of what (Tannor) could be, and I think in the spring and through the fall we saw what we expected out of him the whole time," Chinander said. "I think he has developed himself as a really good player and is doing a lot of really good things right now." - Lincoln Journal Star

  08/02/22 - Marques Buford Jr.rSr/2026, Nebraska, 5-11, 190 (DS#31 CB) + More +

Marques Buford didn't need to be sold on playing a different position. The second-year defensive back arrived at Nebraska as a corner and spent much of his first college season there. But the team had a need for safety depth in mid-October after starter Deontai Williams went down with a knee injury. Enter the 5-foot-11 20-year-old, whose ensuing conversation with DBs coach Travis Fisher wasn't exactly extensive. "He said, 'Marques, go to safety," Buford recalled Friday. "I said, 'OK, Coach." Fisher likes Buford's aggression at the back end of the defense, where he can crash down in the run game and deliver blows to receivers in the middle of the field. Former Husker Cam Taylor-Britt - a cornerback now in the NFL - worked closely with Buford every day. The youngster soaked up everything he could behind now-departed safeties in Marquel Dismuke and Williams. "He's been around those older guys," Fisher said, "and Buford's effort is unmatchable." - Lincoln Journal Star

  08/01/22 - Thomas Fidone IIrJr/2025, Nebraska, 6-5, 243 (DS#23 TE) + More +

Despite having the talent and desire needed to be a starter at tight end for Nebraska, it just hasn't happened on the field yet for Thomas Fidone and Chris Hickman. Fidone, a four-star recruit from Council Bluffs, Iowa, has been injured for much of his young Husker career, only appearing in one game. A highly rated prospect from Omaha, Hickman isn't far off, with five catches in 15 games over three seasons. In a Wednesday night appearance on "Sports Nightly," tight ends coach Sean Beckton said both players are progressing well in their injury rehab, and he hopes both can make an impact on the field this fall.

Fidone suffered an ACL tear during Nebraska's 2021 spring camp and injured his knee again this spring, but the redshirt freshman is determined as ever to finally get his chance. "He's in my office almost every single day," Beckton said. "I know he's only supposed to be working on certain things, but I catch him sometimes doing things he's not supposed to do. So I want to make sure he's following the script of what the doctors are telling him. "He's just built that way; he's one of those guys that wants to be around the team and around the program. He wants to help this football team and it shows." - Lincoln Journal Star

  07/29/22 - Brian BuschinirSr/2025, Nebraska, 6-1, 225 (DS#15 P) + More +

2022 PRESEASON RAY GUY WATCHLIST: Brian Buschini - Nebraska,...Buschini (6-1, 225) transferred to Nebraska from Montana, where he was recognized as the top punter in the FCS. Buschini spent three seasons (2019-21) at Montana. Buschini played in 15 games at Montana, averaging 45.8 yards on 75 career punts. He had 30 punts of 50 yards or longer with the Griz, while placing 35 of his 75 punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line. Buschini also handled kickoffs for Montana, recording 35 career touchbacks. Buschini started all 13 games for the Griz as a redshirt freshman in 2021, when he was named the FCS Punter of the Year and a first-team All-American.

Buschini ranked third nationally with an average of 46.0 yards per punt in 2021, and he helped Montana lead the nation in net punting average. His 46.0-yard average was a school record, breaking the previous record of 44.7 set in 1985. Buschini punted 69 times in 2021 with 30 punts downed inside the opponent’s 20-yard line and 28 punts covering 50 yards or longer. Montana did not play in the fall of 2020 due to the pandemic and played only two games during an abbreviated 2021 spring schedule. Buschini averaged 43.3 yards per punt that season, placing five of his six punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line. Buschini redshirted in 2019. Previously, Buschini was a three-time honorable-mention all-state selection for Capital High School in Helena, Mont., where he handled both the punting and place-kicking duties. - Nebraska Football

2022 PRESEASON BUTKUS AWARD WATCHLIST: Luke Reimer, Nebraska,...Reimer is one of the defensive anchors for the Blackshirts, as he begins his third season as a starter in 2022. Last season, the 6-foot-1, 225-pound junior from Lincoln North Star earned honorable-mention All-Big Ten honors from both the coaches and media, totaling 108 tackles, including 6.0 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles and seven pass breakups.

He set career highs in tackles and TFLs and became the first Husker since 2018 to have a 100-tackle season. Reimer ranked fifth in the Big Ten in both tackles (108) and tackles per game (9.0) last season. He totaled double-digit tackles five times in 2021, including a career-high 19 tackles against Purdue, the most tackles by any Husker in a Big Ten game. Reimer earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week in NU's win over Buffalo with 16 tackles and an interception. - Nebraska Football

2022 PRESEASON BRONKO NAGURSKI TROPHY WATCHLIST: DE Ochaun Mathis, Nebraska,...Mathis will play his first season for the Huskers this fall after spending the last four years at TCU. He played in 38 games with the Horned Frogs and started all 34 contests over the last three seasons. In his TCU career, Mathis recorded 135 tackles, 30.5 tackles for loss and 15.5 sacks with four pass breakups. Mathis was a second-team All-Big 12 selection in both 2020 and 2021. This summer, he was recognized by On3 as the top edge rusher transfer in the country. Last season at TCU, Mathis started all 12 games and totaled 45 tackles, 4.0 sacks and 7.0 tackles for loss.

He had a breakout 2020 campaign for the Horned Frogs, starting all 10 games in the pandemic-shortened season. Mathis led the Big 12 and ranked 12th nationally in sacks per game, averaging nearly 1.0 sack per game with nine sacks in 10 games. He totaled 46 tackles in 2020 with 14.0 tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Mathis started all 12 games of the 2019 season, finishing with 40 tackles, 9.0 TFLs and 2.5 sacks.   07/29/22 - Caleb TannorrSr/2023, Nebraska, 6-3, 237 (DS#85 OLB) + More +

In every position group, it's important to have a leader who sets the standard for the rest of the room. At Nebraska's EDGE position, there are two of them - Caleb Tannor and Garrett Nelson. During a Monday night appearance on "Sports Nightly," Nebraska defensive line/edge rushers coach Mike Dawson identified Tannor and Nelson as the trendsetters in his room. It's not much of a surprise, considering the duo totaled 17 tackles for loss and seven sacks a year ago. But, there's still plenty of work for those two veterans to accomplish this fall. "With both of them, it's about continuing to progress," Dawson said. "Garrett's body is continuing to grow and mature; he came from playing as a freshman undersized, where now I'd think pound-for-pound he'll be as strong as most of the guys in the league. He's got to understand that we need the production."

While Nelson's growth has been in a physical sense, Dawson said Tannor has come along with the mental side. Tannor is growing more familiar with the EDGE position, and attacking different types of blocking schemes will help the senior make more plays this season, Dawson said. Nelson and Tannor's work ethic has already rubbed off on redshirt freshmen Jimari Butler and Blaise Gunnerson, who Dawson said have been standout performers in the offseason training program. - Lincoln Journal Star

  07/29/22 - Travis VokolekrSr/2023, Nebraska, 6-6, 259 (DS#27 TE) + More +

As he sat at a podium Tuesday on the Lucas Oil Stadium turf for Big Ten media days, Nebraska tight end Travis Vokolek was asked about the individual goals he's set for this fall as his final season of college football approaches. In the midst of discussing his focus on becoming a leader, he had an epiphany. "I'm like the oldest guy on the team," the Nebraska tight end said. "I'm 24! It's crazy." A bonafide starter with a show-stealing mullet and a 6-foot-7, 260-pound frame that screams Sundays, Vokolek has a chance to be a breakout player in the Big Ten.

He'll need to be for the Cornhuskers and head coach Scott Frost, a program and coach facing a fork in the road. They went 3-9 last season, with all nine losses coming by single digits, and anything less than reaching a bowl game would be a crisis in Lincoln. Vokolek is taking it all in stride. "There's noise every year, positive and negative," Vokolek said. "Something we just have been focusing on is that it's about us in the locker room and in the facility, it's not about what everyone else thinks." However the season goes, it is guaranteed to be Vokolek's last, marking the end of a long college football journey that began at Rutgers. He spent two seasons there, right in the middle of Chris Ash's disastrous four-year tenure as head coach. - Star Ledger

  07/29/22 - Garrett NelsonrJr/2023, Nebraska, 6-3, 248 (DS#40 DE) + More +

Garrett Nelson acknowledges the chip on his shoulder - on the shoulders of all of Nebraska football players. The Nebraska outside linebacker - and likely captain of the 2022 Husker team - is plenty motivated to win games, and defend coach Scott Frost, after multiple losing seasons in a row. "Everything's right in the world when you win football games, and that hasn't happened in my life in college yet," Nelson said. "When you have professors or students or campus tour guides talk trash to you or your teammates all the time when you're just around campus, just the media and everybody, just to hear that constantly, berate your university that you love and the players that you love and the coaches who are father figures who you love and are around every day, it destroys you as a player and as a man. "So, growing that chip on your shoulder every day, from stuff like that, it's time to play."

A reporter then asked Nelson if 2022 was "the year" for Nebraska. "It's time to play," Nelson said. He conceded that Frost - who took severe criticism as a player in the 1990s when the team won national titles - probably would advise Nelson not to care so much about the critics. "I love him too much not to worry about (the critics)," Nelson said. - Lincoln Journal Star

  07/28/22 - Ben ScottrSr/2025, Nebraska, 6-5, 306 (DS#25 C) + More +

When Ben Scott entered Arizona State nearly four seasons ago, he came in alongside fellow offensive linemen Dohnovan West and LaDarius Henderson. Little did the three freshmen know that they would become mainstays in ASU's offensive line over the next few years with Henderson and West becoming starters as true freshmen and Scott starting in his redshirt freshman season in 2020. The trio moved down to two once West went pro after last season and now is with the San Francisco 49ers. West was a three-year starter and held down the center position last season.

Finding a new center wasn't as difficult of a task considering Scott's expansive experience at the position. In high school, Scott played at center while winning three consecutive state championships with St. Louis High School in Honolulu. Scott played at right tackle in every game last season and became the choice after taking most of the snaps at center during spring practice. "It's been a lot better than expected and I feel like center is more of a home for me than right tackle was. I feel like I'm much more built for center so it's kind of where I would thrive most in and getting all the calls right, it's been a pretty smooth process," Scott said. - Arizona Republic
