  Keali'i Ah Yat threw three touchdown passes, Michael Wortham caught a touchdown pass and ran for two scores and Montana remained unbeaten with a 49-35 victory over Sacramento State on Friday night. Ah Yat completed 16 of 24 passes for 196 yards with an interception for Montana (8-0, 4-0 Big Sky Conference) - ranked No. 4 in the FCS coaches poll. Wortham totaled 89 yards on just seven rushes. Sacramento State (4-4, 2-2) took a 7-0 lead when Rodney Hammond Jr. capped a 13-play drive with a 7-yard touchdown run. Montana answered with Ah Yat's 24-yard touchdown pass to Brooks Davis to knot the score after one quarter. Cardell Williams fired a 63-yard scoring strike to freshman Ernest Campbell and the Hornets moved back in front 14-7 just 10 seconds into the second quarter.

Ah Yat and Wortham teamed up for a 64-yard touchdown and Wortham added a 27-yard scoring run as Montana regained the lead 21-14. Hammond pulled the Hornets even with a 6-yard touchdown run, but Jaxon Fresques muffed a Montana punt that Tanner Huff recovered at the Sac State 21-yard line. Eli Gillman's 13-yard touchdown run three plays later gave the Grizzlies a 28-21 lead at halftime. Ah Yat threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Evan Shafer at the end of a nine-play 90-yard drive to begin the second half. It was the only score of the third quarter as Montana upped its lead to 35-21. Wortham scored on a 15-yard run just 1:48 into the final quarter for a 21-point advantage. Malae Fonoti capped the Grizzlies' scoring with 1:45 left on a 4-yard touchdown run on the first play after an interception by Caleb Otlewski. Williams totaled 332 yards on 25-for-32 passing with an interception for Sac State. He added 17- and 18-yard touchdown runs in the fourth quarter. Campbell had nine receptions for 206 yards.   WEEK 8 BIG SKY OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Keali'i Ah Yat, Montana (QB, R-So., Kaneohe, HI.),...Montana's Keali'i Ah Yat had over 350 yards of total offense and six touchdowns in the 43-21 win over Sacred Heart. The quarterback completed a personal best 82 percent of his passes (27-33) to rack up 349 yards and another career high five touchdowns over the air to post a 220.7 passer rating against Sacred Heart. All told he was responsible for six scores and 368 yards of total offense on the game, adding a rushing touchdown to his haul and 19 net yards. Ah Yat's six touchdowns are tied for the most touchdowns responsible for by a Big Sky player in a game this season. The weekly conference honor is the second of the season for the Grizzly quarterback.   Keali'i Ah Yat threw three of his career-high five touchdown passes in the first half and ran for another score to help undefeated Montana cruise past Sacred Heart 43-21 on Saturday. Ah Yat threw a pair of short-yardage touchdown passes and hit Michael Wortham on a 43-yarder as Montana (7-0), ranked fourth in the FCS coaches' poll, jump out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter. Ah Yat ‘s 3-yard TD run made it 29-7 at the break.

Ah Yat and Wortham connected for a 51-yard touchdown with 5:42 left and Ah Yat's 49-yard TD pass to Korbin Hendrix capped the scoring. Ah Yat finished 27-of-33 passing for 349 yards. Wortham had seven receptions for 132 yards to lead 11 Grizzlies with at least one catch. Jack Snyder threw two touchdown passes to Dean Hangey for Sacred Heart (5-3). The duo's second score pulled the Pioneers to 29-21 with 6:46 remaining. Mitchell Summers added 87 yards rushing on 18 carries with a touchdown for the Pioneers.   WEEK 7 BIG SKY CO-DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Kenzel Lawler, Montana (DB, R-Sr., Corona, Calif.),...Trailing 9-0 coming out of halftime, Kenzel Lawler picked off a pass and returned it 21 yards for a touchdown as he flipped momentum for Montana in the 28-9 victory over Cal Poly. Lawler's interception for a score was the start of 28 unanswered points for the Grizzlies, as the Montana defense shut out the Mustangs in the second half and allowed just 60 yards of offense in the final 30 minutes.   Eli Gillman ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns, Kenzel Lawler returned an interception 21 yards for a TD, and Montana beat Cal Poly 28-9 on Saturday. Keali'i Ah Yat was 27-of-41 passing for 257 yards with a 24-yard scoring strike to Michael Wortham that gave Montana the lead for good at 14-9 early in the fourth quarter. Wortham finished with 84 yards receiving on 10 catches for Montana (6-0, 3-0 Big Sky Conference), ranked No. 4 in the FCS coaches poll.

Ty Dieffenbach threw a short pass to Brooks Wheatley who raced 21 yards to the end zone for a 26-yard touchdown (the 2-point conversion failed) early in the second quarter and Nick Serna kicked a 27-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to give Cal Poly (3-4, 1-2) a 9-0 lead. After the Grizzlies punted on the opening possession of the second half, Lawler's pick-6 got Montana on the scoreboard before Wortham's TD catch with 13:37 to play capped a 14-play, 96-yard drive. Gillman ran for scores of 17 and 13 yards from there as the Grizzlies outscored Cal Poly 28-0 in the second half. Montana leads the all-time series with the Mustangs 20-5. - AP College Football

  WEEK 6 BIG SKY CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Micahel Wortham, Montana (WR, R-Sr., North Highlands, Calif),...Michael Wortham did a bit of everything for the Griz, and did it well when the team needed him most. The senior receiver totaled 247 all-purpose yards while throwing for a touchdown and rushing for two more, including the game winner against Idaho State. He had 41 yards on the ground, 124 receiving, and another 82 on kickoff returns. He also set up a big touchdown with his arm, throwing to quarterback Keali'i Ah Yat on a reverse that set Montana up in the red zone late in the fourth quarter. On the next play he ran it in from nine yards out to put the Griz up for good. Wortham leads the Big Sky and the FCS as a whole in all-purpose yards with 883 on the season, an average of 176 per game.   WEEK 2 BIG SKY CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Eli Gillman, Montana (RB, R-Jr., Dassel, Minn.),...Eli Gillman broke free for a 55-yard touchdown run on his first touch of the game and didn't look back, rushing for a career-high 198 yards and three touchdowns on just 15 carries in Montana's win over Central Washington. Gillman's 198 is a Big Sky high and the third-best rushing game in, not only the FCS, but in all of D-I football so far this season.   Keali'i Ah Yat threw for 300 yards and two scores, including a 28-yard touchdown pass to Brooks Davis with 1:35 left, to give Montana a 24-23 victory over North Dakota on Saturday. Ty Morrison kicked a 42-yard field goal to get Montana within 23-17 with 4:23 remaining. Following North Dakota's three-and-out on its next possession, Ah Yat's winning TD pass capped a seven-play, 67-yard drive that took about a minute. North Dakota (1-2) then drove to its 43, but Jerry Kaminski threw an incomplete pass on fourth-and-7 with 34 seconds left to seal it for Montana (2-0), ranked seventh in the FCS coaches' poll. Ah Yat completed 25 of 39 passes and Davis finished with five receptions for 98 yards. The duo also connected on a 24-yard touchdown late in the third quarter.

Kaminski threw a pair of touchdown passes to give No. 17 North Dakota a 13-0 first-quarter lead. Stevie Rocker Jr.'s 3-yard touchdown run pulled the Grizzlies to 13-7 late in the first. C.J. Elrich's 32-yard field goal stretched the Fighting Hawks' advantage to 16-7 at the break. Kaminski was 17-of-40 passing for 258 yards and threw three touchdown passes, and he added 85 yards rushing on 12 carries. B.J. Fleming caught an 82-yard touchdown pass and finished with five receptions for 138 yards. Korey Tai and Deng Deng also had touchdown catches for the Fighting Hawks. It was the first meeting between the teams at Washington-Grizzly Stadium since Oct. 14, 2017, which Montana won 41-17.   Eli Gillman ran for 198 yards and three touchdowns, Keali'i Ah Yat threw for a pair of scores and Montana rolled to a season-opening 42-17 victory over Division II Central Washington on Saturday night. Gillman broke loose on a 54-yard touchdown run on Montana's opening drive. Steve Rocker Jr.'s 5-yard TD run made it 14-3 heading into the second quarter.

Beau Phillips ran for a 31-yard touchdown late in the second to pull Central Washington (1-1) to 17-14. But on the next possession, Ah Yat connected with Drew Deck on a 50-yard touchdown pass just before halftime. Gillman hit Michael Worthan on a 76-yard touchdown pass midway through the third and Gilliam then added TD runs from 11 and 1 yard to cap the scoring. Ah Yat was 14-of-24 passing for 250 yards. Worthan, who was Eastern Washington's quarterback last season, caught six passes for 120 yards. Rocker finished with 72 yards rushing. Kennedy McGill completed 7 of 16 passes for 76 yards for CWU.   Eli Gillman ran for 89 yards and two touchdowns and Montana held off Missouri State for a 29-24 victory on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams. Jmariyae Robinson's 7-yard touchdown run capped a 10-play, 75-yard drive that pulled Missouri State to 26-24 with 4:43 to play. Montana's Ty Morrison made his third field goal of the game - a 38-yarder- to cap the scoring with 1:38 left. Back-to-back sacks deep inside Missouri State territory on the Bears' final possession sealed it for the FCS third-ranked Grizzlies. Gillman's 37-yard touchdown run gave the Grizzlies a 7-6 lead late in the first quarter. Morrison's field goals from 35 and 22 yards stretched the advantage to 12-10 at intermission.

Jayden Becks' 32-yard run gave the Bears a 17-12 lead early in the third quarter. Montana answered with a Logan Fife 34-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Harris followed by a Gillman 2-yard TD run to take a 26-17 lead with 9:56 to play. Jacob Clark was 23-of-39 passing for 257 yards with one interception for Missouri State. Montana advanced to the program's eighth FCS title game last season but lost to South Dakota State 23-3 and is the reigning Big Sky Conference champions. Attendance was 26,482, the seventh largest at Washington-Grizzly Stadium. - AP College Football

  2023 BIG SKY FOOTBALL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Alex Gubner, DL, Montana,...Gubner was named Defensive Player of the Year after controlling the line of scrimmage for a dominant Montana defense all season. Gubner finished the year with 30 tackles, eight for loss, and three sacks. The Griz defense led the league in points allowed, giving up just 14.5 per game to rank third overall in the FCS. Gubner is the first Grizzly to win Defensive Player of the Year since Dante Olson won in 2019. Gubner is now a three-time all-conference honoree and a two-time first-team selection. In his 49 games as a starter for the Grizzlies he's totaled 157 tackles, 10.5 sacks, and 27 TFLs - currently the 17th-most in program history.
