When Lane Kiffin first appeared at SEC Media Days as Tennessee's coach in 2009, he brought his preseason All-SEC ballot to prove he voted for Florida quarterback Tim Tebow. One of the top storylines that year was ferreting out which coach didn't vote for Tebow, causing him to miss unanimous selection on the coaches' preseason all-conference team by one vote. Then-South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier revealed he was the culprit. Spurrier said the folks he tasked with completing his ballot made a mistake by voting for Ole Miss quarterback Jevan Snead. Twelve years later, Kiffin returned to media days on Tuesday as Ole Miss' second-year coach. And this time, there's no need for anyone to apologize for casting a preseason All-SEC vote for an Ole Miss quarterback.

I reminded Kiffin on Tuesday of how he brought his ballot with him to media days in 2009 and asked whom he plans to vote for as preseason All-SEC quarterback this year. "I would say our own quarterback in Matt," Kiffin said. "Statistically, he played as well as anybody in the country." Corral is one of three quarterbacks who will appear here this week. That speaks to some coaches' reluctance to allow quarterbacks to take their rightful place in the spotlight, but also to the league's lack of proven stars at the position. - The Clarion Ledger

It might not seem worth it today to spend $10,000 for an hour with Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral. By the end of the season, Corral bets it'll seem like a bargain. Now that college athletes can profit off their names, Images and likenesses, the landscape of college athletics is changing. Players can make extra cash now from signing autographs, hosting youth camps, starting their own brands and clothing lines, appearing in advertisements or making public appearances, just to name a few options. A website called Dreamfield has become a hub where people and companies can pay hourly rates to hire college athletes to make appearances at private events. Corral has made headlines and created plenty of social media fodder by setting his hourly rate at $10,000 for an appearance.

Corral told the Clarion Ledger no one has bitten on that price yet. That's partially by design. "Honestly I didn't want to, I don't want to say waste my time, but I want to make it worth my time," Corral told The Clarion Ledger. "They can laugh at it all they want. When it comes to the season and I do what I'm supposed to do, I'm going to have the last laugh." Making a quick buck (or 10,000 of them) isn't Corral's goal, even with NIL laws and protections passed. He said setting his dollar amount so high isn't about making money or showing clout. And it's not even an amount he decided on alone. He said he has a team of players, coaches and advisers he trusts that helps him navigate the new and complicated waters of the NIL era. - The Clarion Ledger

Matt Corral went from food poisoning to avoiding rat poison. Ole Miss' junior quarterback is engulfed with hype heading into the season. Coming off a year where he led the nation in total offense per game, Corral enters is a preseason All-SEC and All-America candidate. The BetMGM sportsbook gives Corral the eighth-best odds to win the Heisman Trophy. That sort of hype is what Corral tries to ignore. He jokes that coach Lane Kiffin tells him it's rat poison, repeating Nick Saban's famous line about media coverage. But more importantly, Corral said he sees that type of coverage as the sort of thing that can be self-defeating. "I feel like people who listen to it, I feel like it affects their work ethic," Corral said. "For me, it's just straight tunnel vision and keeping the main thing the main thing."

Corral spent the weekend at the Manning Passing Academy, the annual high school football camp hosted by Ole Miss legends Archie, Cooper and Eli Manning and Tennessee legend and NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning. Corral was a counselor at the camp along with a number of the nation's other top college quarterbacks. Participating at the Manning Passing Academy wasn't just a goal for Corral. It was a priority. Corral was invited to participate in the camp in 2019 but had to withdraw because of food poisoning from fish he had eaten the night before. - The Clarion Ledger

Despite suffering a season-ending injury in both 2018 and 2020, Jones remains one of the Rebels' key players. In 2019, he came back from a knee injury to play in 10 games and record 33 total tackles, all but four of which were solo. Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy saw promise in the future of Spencer Sanders based on what the quarterback showed in spring ball. "We've been very impressed and excited about Spencer's development," Gundy said Thursday at Big 12 Media Days. "My personal opinion is last year, the spring ball that he missed, and summer conditioning, because of COVID, set him back. "I feel like the two months that we watched him over spring ball, he's developed more than he has in two years." Last season, Sanders continued to deal with issues of inconsistency and untimely turnovers. Gundy feels his quarterback will handle such situations better this year because of his growth. "We'll find out when the season starts," Gundy said. "There's never been a question about his toughness, his commitment and his competitive nature. I think that (quarterback coach) Tim Rattay has done a fantastic job of developing him, and he looked very comfortable as we wrapped up spring in the month of April." - Daily Oklahoman

Tennessee football bolstered its secondary on Thursday night. Alabama defensive back transfer Brandon Turnage went on Instagram to make his pledge to the Vols. He had committed to SEC East rival Georgia before backing off of that pledge, although he never announced he decommitted. Turnage is already listed in the University of Tennessee's student directory. Turnage will be eligible to play immediately after the SEC voted to remove a restriction that forced non-graduate intraconference transfers to sit out one year. A redshirt freshman last season, he has four years of eligibility remaining. Jalen Knox is leaving Missouri to board the Lane Train. The former starting wide receiver entered the NCAA transfer portal last month and has resurfaced at Ole Miss, appearing on the Rebels' roster Wednesday. Knox caught a career-high 31 passes for 305 yards last year and added 95 rushing yards as Eli Drinkwitz's starting slot receiver, moving inside after playing on the outside his first two years in the program.

Ole Miss Spirit, the 247Sports.com affiliate that covers the Rebels, reported that Knox won't be eligible in 2021 and must "overcome some academic hurdles" before he can play in Oxford. The site reported that Knox will enroll as a walk-on. A former Texas high school quarterback, Knox caught 77 passes for 1,031 yards and four touchdowns in three years at Mizzou - more catches than any returning player on MU's roster. - Post-Dispatch

In 2020, center Orlando Umana was primed to be the most experienced player on a young Utah Utes offensive line. That was the case for just one game, as Umana was hurt in the season opener and did not return. Now, Umana will reportedly be looking to continue his career at another school, as ESPN700's Porter Larsen first reported late Monday afternoon that Umana has entered the transfer portal. Despite Umana's resume, which includes getting Pac-12 honorable mention in 2019, it doesn't come as much of a surprise that he would look to transfer, as Nick Ford took control of the starting center spot when Umana went down last season and hasn't looked back. In four seasons with the Utes out of Grant Union High School in Sacramento, Umana played in 40 games with 26 starts (22 at center and four at left guard). - Deseret News

A former Alabama defensive back who announced he was transferring to Georgia may not be a part of the program after all. Brandon Turnage spoke to his high school coach a couple of days ago. "He was just going through some things," Michael Fair, who coached Turnage at Lafayette High School in Oxford, Miss., said Sunday night. "He just said he didn't feel comfortable for some reason." Turnage was expected to compete at cornerback where Georgia lost starters Eric Stokes and Tyson Campbell who declared for the NFL draft. He announced via Instagram on May 14 that he was committed to Georgia. Former Clemson All-ACC cornerback Derion Kendrick announced Tuesday he was transferring to Georgia. Turnage Sunday night tweeted out simply: "Relax with the rumors." That came after a UGASports.com report that Turnage left Athens after Kendrick's transfer was known and "more than likely is not coming back." Another former starter has left the Missouri football team and could enter the NCAA transfer portal. Wide receiver Jalen Knox, who had a career renaissance at a new position early last season, is no longer with the team, MU confirmed. Reached Tuesday by the Post-Dispatch, Knox declined to elaborate on his plans only saying that he hasn't made any decisions about his future. Knox saw his role expand last year when he moved to the slot position and finished with a career-best 31 catches for 305 yards, plus another 95 rushing yards on 12 attempts. He missed the final game of the season with a leg injury and didn't take part in spring practices while recovering from offseason surgery. In three years at Mizzou, Knox caught 77 passes for 1,031 yards and four scores. His 77 career receptions are more than any returning player on the current roster. - Post-Dispatch

Ole Miss and Mississippi State took home the top hardware at the C Spire Awards on Monday. The C Spire Awards, given to the top college athletes in Mississippi, were given out to the best football, basketball and baseball players in Mississippi for 2020-21. These awards are usually given out at the end of each sport's respective season but were given out all in one Monday in a virtual ceremony because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ole Miss wide receiver Elijah Moore was given the Conerly Trophy, awarded to the top college football player in Mississippi. Moore was a first-team All-America receiver in 2020. He caught 86 passes for 1,193 yards and eight touchdowns in eight games and in April was picked in the second round of the NFL Draft by the New York Jets. Additionally, the Kent Hull Offensive Lineman of the Year award was given to Moore's Ole Miss teammate Royce Newman. Newman started 10 games for Ole Miss in 2020, was a Senior Bowl selection and was picked by the Green Bay Packers in the draft. - Clarion Ledger

The first Ole Miss football game of the 2021 season will be played in primetime on national TV for the entire college football world to see. Ole Miss' season opener against Louisville will be played at 7 p.m. CT on Monday, Sept. 6 in Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta and will be televised on ESPN. The Ole Miss-Louisville game will be the only FBS game played on Labor Day, giving the Rebels and the Cardinals a timeslot all to their own. Alabama's most recent transfer has decided to continue his college career at one of the SEC's other premier programs. Former Crimson Tide cornerback Brandon Turnage, who entered the NCAA transfer portal last week, announced on Instagram Friday evening that he will transfer to Georgia. Turnage is a former four-star recruit from Oxford who was ranked as the 11th-best cornerback and 102nd-best overall player in the 2019 recruiting class according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
