  10/23/21 - Hassan HaskinsSr/2022, Michigan, 6-2, 227 (DS#14 RB) + More +

Michigan got off to a sluggish start, perhaps peeking ahead to playing Michigan State. Then the Wolverines used a strong finish to seal a matchup of undefeated rivals. Blake Corum and Hassan Haskins combined for 229 yards rushing and four touchdowns, carrying No. 6 Michigan to a 33-7 win over Northwestern on Saturday. Shortly after the victory, Jim Harbaugh's thoughts had already shifted to facing the ninth-ranked Spartans on the road. "All focus is there," he said. The Wolverines (7-0, 4-0 Big Ten) led the Wildcats (3-4, 1-3) by just three at halftime. They pulled away by outscoring them 23-0 in the first 16:40 of the second half. "We played pretty solid in the first half to give ourselves a chance," Northwestern coach Pat Fizgerald said. "And, then we reverted back to some bad habits." Corum finished with 119 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Haskins ran for 110 yards and two scores.

Corum jukes defenders with shifty moves while Haskins runs through them with power. "We both bring different things to the table," Corum said. "We feed off each other." Michigan had 294 yards rushing, nearly 50 yards more than its average. "They're the best rushing offense in the country for a reason," Fitzgerald said. Cade McNamara was 20 of 27 for 129 yards for the Wolverines, whose inability to throw the ball downfield might prove to be a problem against tougher teams. - Michigan/AP College Football

  10/10/21 - Brad HawkinsrSr/2022, Michigan, 6-1, 207 (DS#15 SS) + More +

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh called the ninth-ranked Wolverines' come-from-behind victory over Nebraska a "Clint Eastwood win." Jake Moody hit a 39-yard field goal with 1:24 remaining to lift Michigan to a 32-29 win over upset-minded Nebraska on Saturday night. "It was a tremendous, tremendous game, incredible really," Harbaugh said after watching Nebraska come back from a 13-0 halftime deficit and take the lead only to see Michigan rally for the win with two late field goals. "We're enjoying it, we're enjoying the incredible." Moody's fourth field goal came after Wolverines defensive back Brad Hawkins forced Cornhuskers quarterback Adrian Martinez to fumble, returning it 19 yards to the Nebraska 18 to set up the game-winner. "We practice pushing out the ball, stripping the ball, hitting the ball," Hawkins said. "That moment just touching the ball, striking the ball came through." Martinez said he thought the play was over when Hawkins took the ball away from him. "I'm not going to stand up here and make excuses for myself," Martinez said. "I thought the play was over. I was standing like I am now and thought the play was over. I've got to take care of the ball. That hurt our team." Michigan (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten) has won its first six games for the first time since starting 9-0 in 2016. - Michigan/AP College Football

Coach Jim Harbaugh and No. 14 Michigan found a formula to shut down the Wisconsin rushing attack that had embarrassed the Wolverines the last couple of years. "Against a tough, physical team, I thought our team played really physical," Harbaugh said. "We matched it every bit." And once Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz went down with a chest injury, the Badgers' chances of continuing their recent run of home domination in this series pretty much disintegrated. Cornelius Johnson caught both of Cade McNamara's touchdown passes and Michigan remained unbeaten Saturday with a 38-17 victory over Wisconsin, marking the Wolverines' first victory at Camp Randall Stadium since 2001.

Wisconsin (1-3, 0-2 Big Ten) trailed 13-10 when Mertz and tight end Jake Ferguson left with chest injuries early in the third quarter. Mertz got hurt when he was sacked by Daxton Hill. After Mertz and Ferguson departed, Michigan (5-0, 1-0) scored 25 straight points to put the game out of reach. "It didn't make a difference who was on the other side of the ball," said Michigan linebacker David Ojabo, who had 2 1/2 of the Wolverines' six sacks. "It was just a relentless effort." Badgers coach Paul Chryst said Mertz went to the hospital for evaluation but otherwise had no immediate update on either injury. Saturday's game marked a dramatic reversal from the last two meetings between these teams. Wisconsin beat Michigan 35-14 in 2019 and 49-11 in 2020 while rushing for over 340 yards in each of those games. This time, Michigan limited the Badgers to 43 yards on 32 carries. - Michigan/AP College Football

  09/25/21 - Hassan HaskinsSr/2022, Michigan, 6-2, 227 (DS#14 RB) + More +

No. 19 Michigan found out, almost the hard way, that its running game can be slowed down. Hassan Haskins ran for touchdowns the first two times the Wolverines had the ball to help them take a 17-point lead, but the undefeated team had to hold on to beat Rutgers 20-13 on Saturday. "Gritty game," coach Jim Harbaugh said. "It wasn't pretty, but when they start making a space for pretty on the scoreboard then we'll worry about that." Michigan (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) opened conference play by running the ball on its first seven snaps and Harbaugh's conservative game plan almost cost him.

After leading 20-3 at halftime, the Wolverines failed to pick up a first down on their first four possessions in the second half. "We just couldn't really find a rhythm and that's the first time that's happened when I've been in the game," quarterback Cade McNamara said. The Scarlet Knights (3-1, 0-1) rallied from a 17-point, third-quarter deficit to pull within seven early in the fourth quarter, but Valentino Ambrosio missed a short field goal. On their next possession, they turned it over on downs and fell to 1 of 4 on fourth down. "We're going to be aggressive," Rutgers coach Greg Schiano said. "We're not here to be close." - Michigan/AP College Football

  09/18/21 - Blake CorumSr/2024, Michigan, 5-08, 205 (DS#4 RB) + More +

Blake Corum rushed for 123 yards and three touchdowns as No. 25 Michigan routed Northern Illinois, 63-10 on Saturday. The Wolverines (3-0) scored touchdowns on their first nine drives, eight of them on the ground. The 10th drive also included a touchdown run, but it was called back for a holding penalty and Michigan turned the ball over on downs. The Wolverines never punted. Northern Illinois responded with its touchdown with 8:28 to play. The Huskies (1-2) kicked a field goal on their second possession of the game, but it was already clear they were in major trouble.

Michigan scored short rushing touchdowns on its first four possessions, two by Hassan Haskins, to take a 28-3 lead in the second quarter. The Wolverines changed up a bit on the fifth possession, scoring on an 87-yard pass from Cade McNamara to Cornelius Johnson - the third-longest passing play in school history - to lead 35-3 at the half. The Wolverines switched quarterbacks at halftime, putting in J.J. McCarthy, but he hadn't thrown a pass when Corum scored on a 49-yard run to increase the margin to 42-3. Michigan used six quarterbacks in the game. - Michigan/AP College Football

  09/12/21 - Blake CorumSr/2024, Michigan, 5-08, 205 (DS#4 RB) + More +

Blake Corum sprinted for a 67-yard touchdown to give Michigan a double-digit lead in the second quarter, one play after Jim Harbaugh called for a fake punt and the Wolverines pulled away to beat Washington 31-10 Saturday night. Michigan (2-0) relied on a tandem of running backs, swarming defense and special teams to take and keep control of the game. "We're going to remain humble because we really haven't done anything yet," Corum said. "We have more to do and more to prove. I can't wait to see how far we go." The Huskies (0-2) have lost their first two games - including the opener to Montana - for the first time since 2008 when they finished 0-12.

Corum ran for 171 yards and three touchdowns, a week after he had 111 yards rushing and scored twice in the season-opening rout over Western Michigan, and credited the offensive line for his success. "They fired off the ball and were real physical," Corum said. "They made my job easy, so shout out to them." Hassan Haskins had 155 yards rushing and a score for the Wolverines, whose passing game was limited without injured receiver Ronnie Bell. The Wolverines were not moving the ball much and led just 3-0 early in the second quarter when Harbaugh made a gamble that paid off. "That was big," Harbaugh acknowledged. "Pivotal." With the punt team on the field facing a fourth-and-1 from the Michigan 30, a short snap went to Michael Barrett and he ran 3 yards for a first down. "It was a huge momentum shift," Washington coach Jimmy Lake said. "That's the nature of college football, especially when you're on the road in that hostile environment." - Michigan/AP College Football
