  07/25/22 - Rod MoorerSr/2027, Michigan, 5-11, 198 (DS#12 FS) + More +

Michigan expects to have another piece back on defense when fall camp kicks off in a couple of weeks. Defensive back Rod Moore, who emerged as a starter last year in his true-freshman season, has been cleared to practice after having surgery on a torn labrum back in January. Rehab from the shoulder injury took months, forcing the 6-foot, 173-pound safety to sit out the spring session. "It's all 100 percent," Moore told MLive on Thursday during the team's statewide tour stop in Flint. "I'm good now." Moore called missing the Wolverines' 15 spring practices "a bump in the road," but maintained that he stayed active mentally, got into the weight room to improve his leg strength, and "added a couple of pounds." "I probably (tore) it the middle of the season, but I just kept playing through it," Moore said. The Clayton, Ohio, native appeared in 11 games during the 2021 season, first as a reserve safety and then a starter. Moore earned his first collegiate start in the win at Penn State, recording six tackles, and followed it up with five tackles in a win over Maryland. - Ann Arbor News

  07/24/22 - Ernest HausmannSr/2026, Michigan, 6-1, 226 (DS#36 ILB) + More +

There's still no doubt who the top dogs are in Nebraska's linebacker room. Luke Reimer led the Huskers with 108 tackles last year, and Nick Henrich wasn't far behind with 99. Both are back as presumptive starters for NU in 2022. However, with Reimer nursing an injury this spring, some new faces have stepped up as possible contributors in 2022. During a Wednesday night appearance on "Sports Nightly," linebackers coach Barrett Ruud identified Ernest Hausmann as a player who impressed him during the spring.

A former Columbus standout and first-team Super-State selection in 2021, Hausmann enrolled early at Nebraska and arrived on campus in January, which Ruud said worked to his advantage. "He's been what we expected and what we anticipated," Ruud said. "The fact he got here early and got the spring ball in is going to be huge for him possibly having an opportunity to play and contribute real minutes in the fall." Something Ruud looks for in his young players is an understanding of why they line up in places in certain packages or fill certain spots, and that's something Hausmann showed over time. "He made a big jump probably from practice 10 or 11 to practice 12 or 13. All of a sudden, it just started clicking," Ruud said. - Lincoln Journal Star

  07/23/22 - Trente JonesrSr/2024, Michigan, 6-4, 305 (DS#27 OG) + More +

With four of the starting jobs on Michigan's offensive line seemingly locked up, right tackle is still up for grabs as the Wolverines head into preseason camp in early August. The spot opened after last season with the departure of Andrew Stueber to the NFL. Trente Jones had the edge over Karsen Barnhart at the position coming out of spring practice, according to coach Jim Harbaugh and co-offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Sherrone Moore. While he may be the front-runner, Jones said nothing is settled and the competition is ongoing.

Jones is 6-foot-4, 307 pounds and made several appearances last year in a jumbo set and also participated on special teams. He was part of the 2019 freshman class, along with Barnhart, and because of his time in the program and his relationship with his fellow linemen, he never wanted to take the approach that this was some sort of heated challenge to become a starter. "This year, all I was doing was going out every day, working on my craft, trying to better myself instead of thinking about it as a battle," Jones said at a recent team event visiting the Michigan National Guard. "I enjoyed it. It's not over yet." - Detroit News

  07/21/22 - Olusegun OluwatimirSr/2023, Michigan, 6-3, 309 (DS#5 C) + More +

Make no mistake, Olu Oluwatimi likes to have fun and joke around and is especially fond of cooking. But since his arrival earlier this year as a graduate transfer from Virginia, the experienced center has been all about football and acclimating to his new team. Oluwatimi started 32 straight games at center for the Cavaliers and last season was one of three finalists for the Rimington Award presented to the nation's top center. He will now anchor Michigan's offensive line, which won the Joe Moore Award last season as the nation's top line, and has been turning heads and drawing praise from his new teammates since before spring practice.

There are five individuals who start on an offensive line, but it's the position group most often described as a unit. The five must play in sync to work well. Oluwatimi said it took him a month to absorb the playbook, but his main focus has been on playing as one with his fellow linemen. "At the center position, it's more than just picking up the offense," Oluwatimi told The Detroit News at a recent team event with the Michigan National Guard. "You've got to jell with the guys around you. All of that is still a work in progress." Michigan opens preseason camp the first week of August, but Oluwatimi already seems to have acclimated well to his new school and team. "It's like he's been here four years," Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy said. "Besides his God-given talents and his freakish physique, that mental aspect is what is going to make him a first-round (NFL) pick in my eyes. Everything about him has been hitting the ground running, smooth. He's a leader on this team already." - Detroit News

2022 PRESEASON MAXWELL AWARD WATCH LIST: Blake Corum, Michigan,...As a sophomore running back for Michigan in 2021, Blake Corum (all 5-8, 220 pounds of him), appeared in 12 games and also returned kickoffs; carried 143 times for 952 yards with 11 touchdowns and added 24 receptions for 141 yards and one touchdown; also returned 12 kickoffs for 304 yards to earn his second varsity letter (wow, remember those letters on varsity jackets and sweaters in black and white movies? Michigan is so quaint). Recorded his first career 100-yard rushing effort against Western Michigan (Sept. 4), totaling 14 carries for 111 yards with a touchdown and adding two receptions for 22 yards and a touchdown. Had a monster performance against Washington (Sept. 11) with 21 carries, 171 rushing yards and three touchdowns (all career highs at the time) and added a 49-yard return for 231 all purpose yards. - Michigan Football

  07/20/22 - J.J. McCarthyJr/2024, Michigan, 6-3, 219 (DS#4 QB) + More +

As a backup last season, J.J. McCarthy, threw for 516 yards and had five touchdowns against two interceptions and also ran for 124 yards and two touchdowns. He likes to say the injury was a "blessing in disguise" because it reinforced to him how much he wants to be the Michigan starting quarterback. "Being out there and being able to play with my guys and sitting out for so long, it feels like I'm a little kid again out there in first grade playing ball with my boys," McCarthy said.

He has been throwing, but said he couldn't say he's exactly where he wants to be. Not yet, at least. "Arm-wise, if I could put a number on it, I'm 90%," McCarthy said. "I can throw 50 to 60 yards, but I haven't hit that 70 to 80 range that I want to hit. That's kind of the range I'm looking for." McCarthy said before the injury he comfortably threw 70-plus yards. His eyes twinkled as he gave an assured nod when asked if the Wolverines have players who can sprint fast enough to make that type of play, say, on a Hail Mary. "A lot of guys on our team," McCarthy said, smiling confidently. - Detroit News

  07/18/22 - Donaven McCulleyrSr/2026, Michigan, 6-5, 209 (DS#84 WR) + More +

Indiana coach Tom Allen has been hosting players at his house by position group this summer and posting group photos on his Twitter account. On Thursday night, he hosted the wide receivers, which led to him formally confirming former Lawrence North star Donaven McCulley has joined that position group after starting four games at quarterback for IU last season. The move was initially reported in June when IU play-by-play man Don Fischer said McCulley would move during a radio interview.

Allen told IndyStar the decision to move was actually McCulley's idea. The 6-5, 210-pounder has had an interest in the position for years, Allen said, and believed it would be his quickest path to playing time this season with there being extensive competition at quarterback, with the addition of Missouri transfer Connor Bazelak and return of a healthy Jack Tuttle. Allen said he was thrilled with the move, as McCulley's length, athleticism and skill set gives him the opportunity to make an immediate impact. The Hoosiers lost their two starting outside wide receivers in Ty Fryfogle and Miles Marshall. McCulley is expected to compete for those spots along with North Carolina transfer Emery Simmons and junior college transfer Cam Camper among others. - Indianapolis Star/News

  07/12/22 - Ryan HayesrSr/2023, Michigan, 6-6, 305 (DS#11 OT) + More +

If you needed another reason to get excited about Michigan's offensive prospects this fall, look no further than Phil Steele. The long-time college football analyst and author of the annual namesake preview magazine, Steele ranks the Wolverines' offensive line No. 1 in the country heading into the 2022 season. In his magazine, on newsstands now (and available for purchase online), Steele says Michigan's front five could become the first-ever repeat winners of the Joe Moore Award.

The unit returns three full-time starters and its position coach and co-offensive coordinator, Sherrone Moore, who adds play-calling duties this season. "They lose two starters but add Virginia transfer Olusegun Oluwatimi at center, and he joins 14 (very highly touted recruits) on the unit, including second-team Big Ten left tackle Ryan Hayes," Steele writes. "They average 316 pounds and have 87 career starts." Steele is big on experience and returning production, and Michigan has that again this fall - returning starting left tackle Ryan Hayes, starting right guard Zak Zinter and starting left guard Trevor Keegan. While center Andrew Vastardis has elected to move on, the unit has seemingly upgraded with Oluwatimi, a graduate transfer who was a finalist for the Rimington Trophy last season. - Ann Arbor News
