  07/17/22 - Brendon LewisrSr/2026, Memphis, 6-2, 209 (DS#21 QB) + More +

With the season opener still seven weeks away, Colorado head football coach Karl Dorrell isn't naming a starting quarterback yet. He made it clear Wednesday, however, that it's Brendon Lewis' job to lose. Speaking at a media roundtable at Colorado National Golf Club, Dorrell said the competition to start will be ongoing but, "B-Lew is in the driver's seat. "He was our starter a year ago. We can't discredit that. I mean, someone's gonna have to beat him out. That's the flat truth." Rick George says remaining Pac-12 members 'staying aligned' amid conference realignment Lewis, now a sophomore, started all 12 games in 2021, but struggled at times. He was 11th in the Pac-12 in passer rating (118.82), and 12th in completion percentage (58.0) and passing yards per game (128.3).

Overall, he threw for 1,540 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also threw just three interceptions - the lowest total among the starters in the conference. Lewis displayed his toughness, fighting through a year in which the offensive line struggled. He was sacked 31 times but still ran for 188 yards and two touchdowns. "He knows he's got a job to hang on to and he knows he's got to continue to get better," Dorrell said. "And he knows that there's people nipping at his heels, so it's great competition, but he's in the driver's seat." - Daily Camera

  07/15/22 - Seth HeniganSr/2025, Memphis, 6-3, 215 (DS#13 QB) + More +

Seth Henigan's debut season at Memphis went smoother than expected. He made history as the first true freshman quarterback to start a Tigers season opener, then became a freshman all-American. Henigan enters preseason camp of year two as the no-doubt starter. After throwing for 3,322 yards - second-most by a Tigers quarterback in his first season - and 25 touchdowns with eight interceptions, Henigan leads an offense with new coordinator Tim Cramsey that faces more personnel questions than recent seasons. Who will be his No. 1 receiving target? Can the run game get back to its 2017-19 form? With four returning starters on the offensive line, how much better can Henigan get? Ask coach Ryan Silverfield, and there's confidence Henigan has yet to reach his ceiling. "Going into a second year of a quarterback, whether it's a rookie in the NFL or freshman to sophomore year, the game's going to slow down a little bit more," Silverfield said on 92.9 FM ESPN Friday. "(Seth's) not thinking about the play concept ... or processing in your mind as a play occurs. Now hopefully, it just naturally happens where it's just a feel for it, that he's been in those situations before." - Memphis Commercial Appeal

  07/13/22 - Omarion CooperrSr/2026, Memphis, 6-0, 190 (DS#999 CB) + More +

Omarion "Duke" Cooper and Kevin Knowles II, two cornerbacks in FSU's 2021 recruiting class, impressed as true freshmen last season. Azareye'h Thomas and Sam McCall immediately held their own as early-enrolled freshmen cornerbacks in the spring. Cooper gradually worked his way into the rotation last season before breaking out and starting the final three games at boundary cornerback. He most notably tallied an interception and four pass breakups in the win over Miami, making him the nation's first true freshman to reach both of those marks in a game since Virginia Tech's Kendall Fuller in 2013.

Knowles started seven of the final eight games at nickel cornerback after Jammie Robinson left the position to play safety. By establishing himself as a serviceable nickel, Knowles helped keep Robinson's position switch from being temporary. Robinson claimed first-team All-ACC honors last season. After the season, Cooper and Knowles shared Devaughn Darling Defensive Freshman of the Year honors from the Seminoles. In eight games, Cooper accumulated 16 tackles, two interceptions and four pass breakups. Knowles posted 26 tackles, 1.5 tackles for a loss and two pass breakups across 12 games. - Times Union

  07/09/22 - Brady WhiterSr/2021, Memphis, 6-1, 210 (DS#13 QB) + More +

Brady White will be back on the Memphis sidelines as the former Tigers quarterback has been hired as an offensive graduate assistant, a source familiar with the decision told The Commercial Appeal. The source requested anonymity because an announcement has not been made public. 2023 Recruiting Class: Memphis football beefs up 2023 recruiting class with 'monster' commitment, more defense.

White spent three seasons at Memphis (2018-20) and set school records for quarterback wins, passing yards and touchdowns. In 2019, he led the Tigers to their most successful season in school history that ended with a berth in the Cotton Bowl against Penn State. Memphis went 12-2 that season, setting a program single-season record for wins, and won its first outright AAC championship with a win over Cincinnati. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

  05/25/22 - Seth HeniganSr/2025, Memphis, 6-3, 215 (DS#13 QB) + More +

Memphis coach Ryan Silverfield affirmed Monday that Seth Henigan will be his starting quarterback when the Tigers open preseason practice in August. With Grant Gunnell transferring to North Texas this month, Henigan enters the season as one of two Tigers quarterbacks on the roster with in-game experience. But after he and Gunnell battled this spring, the job once again belongs to Henigan. "We know that Seth's our guy moving forward, we're excited about him," Silverfield said at Fire Station 18 where the Tigers unveiled a new blue pumper truck that will be present at various sporting events next season. Silverfield didn't mention Gunnell by name but Henigan said during a radio interview Friday that he believed Gunnell left because he felt he wouldn't be the starter.

Henigan said he took almost all the first-team reps in the spring and understood why Gunnell, who started two seasons at Arizona, wanted to perhaps seek another opportunity. It's something Silverfield knows well as he's described how roster management is often part of his job. Memphis has added six players via transfer since spring practice ended. "I understand this day and age with college football and the transfer portal, especially with the quarterback position," Silverfield said. He added that he doesn't expect the Tigers to dive too deeply into the portal between now and August. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

  05/20/22 - Ryan GloverrSr/2023, Memphis, 6-1, 208 (DS#56 QB) + More +

Memphis football added more quarterback depth Wednesday with a commitment from senior Ryan Glover, who was at Cal last season. Glover played in one game at Cal when he started against Arizona. Glover announced his commitment on Twitter He also played at Penn and Western Carolina and has one year of eligibility remaining. Glover entered the transfer portal in April. Glover adds depth to a Tigers' quarterback room lacking experience behind starter Seth Henigan. Junior Grant Gunnell transferred to North Texas after spring practice and the Tigers - between junior Hunter Hulsey and freshmen Tevin Carter and J.C. French - didn't have a second quarterback who's appeared in a game.

That's where Glover hopes to help. A former three-star recruit in 2017 from Woodward Academy in Atlanta, Georgia, he signed with Penn and appeared in one game as a true freshman. In 2018, he started 10 games and threw for 1,482 yards, seven touchdowns and six interceptions while rushing for 300 yards and two scores on 100 carries. Glover played in five games in 2019 before transferring in 2020 to Western Carolina when the Ivy League canceled competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

  05/09/22 - Andrew MasonrJr/2025, Memphis, 5-09, 160 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Memphis football continued to mine the transfer portal by adding another receiver to a deep room. Andrew Mason, who was at Rice the past two seasons, announced Friday on Twitter that he had committed to the Tigers. He's the fourth player to commit to Memphis since spring practice ended. Mason, who attended Ravenwood High School in Brentwood, Tennessee, caught seven passes for 86 yards in two seasons for Rice. The 5-foot-10 sophomore has three years of eligibility remaining and was a three-star recruit in 2020. The Tigers have also added defensive lineman Kamren Washington, defensive end CorMontae Hamilton and defensive back Davion Ross through the portal. All four players are expected to enroll for preseason practice. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

  05/06/22 - Quindell JohnsonrSr/2023, Memphis, 6-0, 201 (DS#14 FS) + More +

The University of Memphis is staying in virtual lockstep with the warp speed evolution of the collegiate athletics landscape in Tennessee. On April 20, Gov. Bill Lee signed an amendment aimed at further loosening NIL restrictions on colleges and universities. It clears the way for coaches - and all school employees - to attend NIL events, fundraise for NIL collectives and for NIL representatives to make presentations on campus to recruits and players.

In other words, NIL dealings between supporters, coaches and athletes must no longer be strictly confined to a third-party medium. On Tuesday, the Memphis athletics department announced the launch of its official NIL marketplace, which will be powered by the school's current partner, Opendorse, an NIL readiness company. Touted as a more streamlined avenue for fans, donors, brands and sponsors to browse, book, pitch and pay Tigers athletes for NIL activities, Memphis is one of the first schools in the country to offer a program of this kind. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

  05/03/22 - Chris HowardrSr/2023, Memphis, 6-2, 211 (DS#22 K) + More +

Florida kicker Chris Howard will enter his name into the NCAA's transfer portal, the fifth-year senior announced Monday on social media. Howard arrived at Florida as a walk-on prior to the 2017 season, though he didn't see the field in either of his first two seasons, and he made just five appearances between his redshirt sophomore and redshirt junior seasons with the Gators program.

During the 2021 season, Howard appeared in nine games with the Gators while splitting time with transfer Jace Christmann. Howard converted 7-of-9 field goal attempts while nailing all four of his extra-point attempts, and he was expected to compete for the role of the team's starting kicker under new UF coach Billy Napier. But in Florida's Orange and Blue game on April 14, Howard missed a 32-yard field-goal attempt in the first half, while walk-on kicker Adam Mihalek converted a 52-yard attempt, followed by a successful 49-yard conversion. - Gainesville Sun

Memphis added another transfer Monday with a local connection in former Ohio State defensive end CorMontae Hamilton. Hamilton, who announced his decision on Twitter, was a former three-star recruit as a tight end at Whitehaven High School. He signed with Ohio State in 2019 after earning a scholarship following a solo Greyhound bus trip from Memphis to attend a Buckeyes football camp in June 2018. Per Hamilton's post, he has three years of eligibility remaining and will be a junior this season. He appeared in 13 games over two seasons and entered the transfer portal in February. He's also the second defensive linemen the Tigers added after the spring game. Former Sam Houston lineman Kamren Washington, the reigning WAC Freshman of the Year, committed on Sunday. - Memphis Commercial Appeal
