  07/10/19 - Nate WietingrSr/2020, Iowa, 6-4, 244 (DS#21 TE) + More +

Through four seasons at Iowa, Nate Wieting has more surgical scars (four) than passes caught (three). He's watched Henry Krieger-Coble, George Kittle, Noah Fant and T.J. Hockenson go from Hawkeye tight end to the NFL. Wieting learned from all of them while recuperating from one surgery or another. It's Wieting's turn now, and he has a message for all the fretting Hawkeye fans out there: It's going to be OK.

"I still think we have a lot coming back. And I think the guys in the room can show that we can be really good at the tight end position," Wieting said Tuesday. "Sometimes, you take a look back, see what you've overcome ... I'm excited to get after it and show what I can do, try to help the team win some games." Wieting arrived in Iowa City from his Illinois home as a walk-on in 2015. He weighed 220 pounds. He marveled at Krieger-Coble's footwork. He got schooled by defensive end Drew Ott. He hurt his foot so badly that he needed offseason surgery.

"I've been working on how I run routes and then I've also been working on my speed with our workouts and our conditioning. You've got to approach every rep like it's a 100-meter dash - that's how you get faster. I think I'm a very athletic player and I think with practice and fundamentals, you can compete." - Iowa City Press-Citizen

It's going to be interesting to see some of the Road Grades that Scouts give Wieting during the season. We are starting him right outside the Draft for now.

  07/08/19 - *Tristan WirfsJr/2020, Iowa, 6-5, 320 (DS#1 OT) + More +

Tristan Wirfs has done a lot of things well during his first two seasons as a starter on the Iowa offensive line. He also understands that the devil is in the details and as he prepares for his junior season, those details start with the hands for the returning honorable mention all-Big Ten tackle. "It's something I hear in my sleep, "Hands up. Hands up," and the coaches are right, it's something I have to do and do consistently if I want to become the player I know I can become," Wirfs said.

"That's something I've been working on since I got here. I had a tendency to play with my hands lower than they needed to me. I'm making progress. I'm playing with them higher than where they were before, but I still need to play with my hands at a higher level." Wirfs understands that is part of what it will take for him to take his game to the next level, something he expects to accomplish while continuing to focus on the fundamentals as Iowa works toward the start of fall camp in less than a month. - Mason City Globe Gazette

  06/18/19 - *A.J. EpenesaJr/2020, Iowa, 6-5, 275 (DS#3 DE) + More +

Iowa junior A.J. Epenesa knows that he has a strong shot at being picked in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft should he choose to go pro next spring. He's choosing not to think about it all that much. Epenesa, a 6-foot-6, 280-pound defensive end who led the Big Ten with 10 1-2 sacks a year ago despite coming off the bench, is poised for a monster season in 2019. Epenesa will play nearly every down next fall after the Hawkeyes lost three linemen to the NFL, meaning his numbers should spike even as opposing teams build their game plans around slowing him down. But Epenesa also knows that if he loses sight of doing all he can to help the Hawkeyes in 2019, he might not be as highly regarded by NFL teams in 2020.

Iowa opens next season on Aug. 31 against Miami (Ohio). "It's a lifelong dream," Epenesa said about playing in the NFL. "But I try not to think too hard about it. I don't want it to distract me from other things. Obviously, it's a blessing to be put up that high with other big names ... basically, I don't want to lose focus on what's going on here." As arguably the highest-rated recruit coach Kirk Ferentz has had in 21 seasons at Iowa, Epenesa arrived in Iowa City with a ton of hype. The Hawkeyes even used him as a freshman, something they rarely do with linemen, and he made the Big Ten's all-freshman team in spot duty. - AP College Football
