  07/28/22 - Justin BrittrSr/2024, Iowa, 6-4, 301 (DS#999 OG) + More +

Iowa offensive lineman Justin Britt and wide receiver Jackson Ritter will not play in 2022 after suffering season-ending injuries, football coach Kirk Ferentz told reporters Tuesday. "There's absolutely no way they'll play this fall," Ferentz said to Iowa reporters at Big Ten Media Days after his televised news conference. Britt's absence is a result of "complications" with his previous knee injury, Ferentz said. "There have been some recurring issues there," Ferentz said. "You just feel bad for him. It's a tough break." While the offensive line is certainly young, the loss is especially noticeable at an inexperienced wide receiver position. Iowa only has three wideouts who have caught a pass in a Hawkeye uniform - Keagan Johnson, Arland Bruce IV and Nico Ragaini. The injury contributed to walk-on Alec Wick earning a spot on the second team in Tuesday's depth chart. - The Gazette

Minnesota finished in third place with two first-place votes. Ohio State was the unanimous selection for East Division and Big Ten champion. Iowa has won the division two times (2015, 2021) since implementation in 2011, with four runner-up finishes coming in 2013, 2016, 2018 and 2020. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

  07/26/22 - Nick JacksonrSr/2025, Iowa, 6-1, 228 (DS#16 ILB) + More +

Consecutive seasons with 100-plus tackles takes consistency and extreme effort above all else, Virginia linebacker Nick Jackson said Thursday. Jackson, the senior whose 117 takedowns topped the Atlantic Coast Conference last fall and whose 105 tackles were second most in the league the year before, can make it three straight campaigns with more than 100 tackles this coming season. "I just try to be mobile," he said. "I think I can make plays wherever the field is. I think I can make plays against the pass and I can run down running backs. I can make plays on the perimeter and then I can be fluid in the box. I just think being consistent and physical in the box has allowed me to make plays and maximize those opportunities."

This summer, Jackson said, he's prioritized running to increase his endurance in order to play at his best for the 70 to 80 snaps he expects to be on the field for each Saturday. "And you've got to play every snap like it's your last," Jackson said. "It's the matter of fact in this sport we're playing. Anything can happen at any moment and nothing is guaranteed, so playing every snap like it's your last is why. I want to play for my brothers and those guys over there are counting on me every single time to try and make the play, so if I'm not running as hard as I can, I'm doing something wrong." - Charlottesville Daily Progress

Ohio State's number is $13 million. That's how much coach Ryan Day thinks Buckeye boosters need to raise annually for name, image and likeness to keep his roster in tact, according to a June Cleveland.com report. "I don't have that big of a number in mind," said Brad Heinrichs, the CEO of Iowa's Swarm Collective at a Tuesday news conference in University Heights. But still, the number at Iowa will probably have plenty of zeros at the end of it. "We're going to need several million dollars to help us go where we want to go," Heinrichs said. "Whether that's 5, 10, I'm not sure, but we've got a ways to go."

At the same time, Heinrichs said he'll likely have a "better idea" of what's possible in 30 days. The Swarm Collective -- where any interested athletes in football, men's basketball and women's basketball can profit from fans while supporting nonprofits -- is in its infancy after officially launching on Tuesday. The "several million dollars" number for NIL revenue may have some sticker shock, but it'd be a fraction of what Iowa Athletics receives annually in donations. - The Gazette

Next week, all 14 Big Ten schools will migrate to Indianapolis, Indiana for Big Ten football media days. On Monday, Iowa announced which three players will represent them. Coach Kirk Ferentz selected a trio of seniors: linebacker Jack Campbell, tight end Sam LaPorta and defensive back Kaevon Merriweather. Big Ten media days will take place from July 26-27 with Iowa addressing the media on the first day. They're joined by Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Northwestern. Day two will feature Illinois, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers, and Wisconsin. Campbell highlights the defensive selections as Iowa's 2021 team captain and leading tackler. Last season, he recorded 140 tackles while adding 3.5 sacks and two interceptions. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

The University of Iowa's official NIL collective will launch next week. In a university release issued Thursday afternoon, it was revealed that the "Iowa Swarm Collective" will hold an introductory news conference at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Marriott hotel across from Kinnick Stadium. Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz and men's and women's basketball coaches Fran McCaffery and Lisa Bluder will take part in the news conference, signaling the collective will serve all three of those sports.

The collective will be led by Brad Heinrichs, a four-year letterman in golf and a 1997 graduate of Iowa who runs an actuary firm in Fort Myers, Florida. Heinrichs, other Iowa Swarm Collective executives, and executives from United Way of Johnson and Washington Counties will be present on Tuesday as well. "As a former student-athlete at the University of Iowa, I am excited to form The Swarm Collective - a non-profit corporation that contracts with Iowa's student athletes to serve the community," Heinrichs said via press release. "NIL is a wonderful tool for student-athletes to be able to profit from their name, image and likeness. Our objective is to use their popularity for the benefit of the Iowa community by raising money or providing services to local charities and other non-profit organizations." Last week, another group called the Iowa City NIL Club announced a partnership exclusively with Iowa football. That group is offering membership to fans for $199 that includes exclusive digital and in-person events with players and other perks throughout the year. It's set to officially launch Friday. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

  07/14/22 - Mason RichmanrSr/2025, Iowa, 6-5, 307 (DS#27 OT) + More +

Looking back, Mason Richman views his redshirt freshman year at Iowa as a roller-coaster experience. He found himself in a rare position - a freshman at Iowa starting on the offensive line and at a premier position: left tackle. Richman enjoyed the highs of starting for a Big Ten West champion team but also went through expected growing pains as a young player competing against elite competition weekly. Entering this season he's still using the day-by-day approach that got him through last season but feels much more comfortable this summer.

"I think this year I have a better understanding of what I need to do as a person and athlete on this team," Richman said. "Just to help the team in general instead of a lot of the self-minded mindset last year of just trying to play and get on the field and everything. So I think this year I've certainly taken more of a team mindset because if I can help myself and others around me, those others around me will also bring me up in my own play and make me look a little bit better sometimes." Richman's maturation as a leader will be just as important as his play on the field. Despite his sophomore eligibility, he has the most career starts among Iowa's current offensive line group with 12. Another sophomore, guard Connor Colby, has 11. - Iowa City Press-Citizen
