Nate Wiggins broke up Sam Hartman's fourth-down pass in the end zone to help No. 5 Clemson hold off No. 21 Wake Forest 51-45 in double overtime on Saturday. Wiggins had been targeted frequently by Hartman and the Wake Forest receivers but came through to knock away Hartman's final ball for A.T. Perry. He fell to the end zone turf, then sprung up to join his team in celebration after a wild shootout between the reigning Atlantic Coast Conference's Atlantic Division Demon Deacons and the preseason league favorite Tigers. "We'll get this defense fixed," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said on the ESPN postgame interview. "But man, this offense … all the big plays, they never flinched. That's what it's all about. I'm just really proud of them. they grew up a little bit tonight." D.J. Uiagalelei threw for 375 yards and five touchdowns to lead Clemson (4-0, 2-0 ACC), including the go-ahead score over the middle to Davis Allen to start the second overtime.

The Tigers also came up with a few key plays defensively at big moments late to take some pressure off an injury-battered secondary, including Tyler Davis teaming with linemate Myles Murphy to sack Hartman on a potentially winning Wake Forest drive that had neared midfield late in regulation. Hartman threw for 337 yards and a program-record six touchdowns for Wake Forest (3-1, 0-1), including two each to Jahmal Banks and Donavon Greene. But the Demon Deacons stalled out near midfield on a potential winning drive to end regulation, then couldn't stop the Tigers in the first OT after starting off with Hartman's TD throw to Perry. It marked Clemson's 14th straight win in the series, with Wake Forest's last win coming in 2008 - which led to the ouster of Tommy Bowden as coach and Swinney being named the interim. - Clemson/AP College Football

Quarterback Tate Rodemaker came off the bench to lead Florida State to a come-from-behind 35-31 victory over Louisville on Friday night. The sophomore came in after Jordan Travis suffered a lower left leg injury with a little more than four minutes left in the second quarter and Florida State down 21-14. All the Valdosta, Georgia native did was lead the Seminoles to three, 75-yard second-half scoring drives. The last came with 7:54 left with a sensational 2-yard catch in the end zone by Johnny Wilson that put the Seminoles (3-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) up for good.

Rodemaker finished 6-for-10 passing for 109 yards with two touchdowns and an interception while leading Florida State to 260 of their 455 yards. Treshaun Ward added 126 yards on 10 carries for the Seminoles. Wilson finished with seven catches for 149 yards and both touchdowns from Rodemaker. Louisville (1-2, 0-2) lost despite racking up 495 yards on offense. Malik Cunningham threw for 243 yards on 21-of-34 passing with a touchdown and an interception. The fifth-year senior also added 127 yards rushing and two scores on 17 carries. The Cardinals had a chance to win the game after Ryan Fitzgerald missed a 36-yard field goal with 1:44 left, but Kevin Knowles II picked off a Cunningham pass at the Florida State 38 with 37 seconds left. - Florida State/AP College Football

  09/10/22 - DJ UiagaleleirSr/2025, Florida State, 6-4, 229 (DS#32 QB) + More +

DJ Uiagalelei looks more and more like the leader who can continue Clemson's championship legacy, than the one who struggled his first season as a starter a year ago. Uiagalelei threw for 231 yards and two touchdowns and the fifth-ranked Tigers took a big, first-half lead to beat FCS opponent Furman 35-12 on Saturday. "You can see he's playing with a lot of confidence," Clemson offensive coordinator Brandon Streeter said. "It shows." That wasn't the case in 2021 as Uiagalelei, the highly touted passer who figured to instantly replace Clemson's No. 1 NFL draft pick in Trevor Lawrence, struggled to find his way. Uiagalelei had nine touchdowns against 10 interceptions as the Tigers fell from the national and ACC title chase by midseason. "There's been nobody more under the fire than him," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said about Uiagalelei. "Two games don't make a season, but proud of how he's played." Uiagalelei led Clemson to touchdowns on his first five drives to take a 35-9 lead early in the third quarter. Uiagalelei did have a pick off a tipped ball with his team ahead by 23 points. "For the most part, I played a solid game," Uiagalelei said. "Overall, I thought it was good game today." - Clemson/AP College Football

  09/06/22 - DJ UiagaleleirSr/2025, Florida State, 6-4, 229 (DS#32 QB) + More +

DJ Uiagalelie threw for one touchdown and ran for another, overcoming a sluggish start in the season opener as No. 4 Clemson pulled away for a 41-10 victory over Georgia Tech on Monday night. Uiagalelie completed 19 of 32 passes for 209 yards, including a 6-yard scoring play to Beaux Collins that gave the Tigers a two-touchdown lead in the first half. Georgia Tech, looking to improve on three straight three-win seasons that have put coach Geoff Collins on the hot seat, kept it closer than expected much of the way. But the Yellow Jackets couldn't overcome two blocked punts, both of which led to short touchdown runs by Will Shipley.

Georgia Tech pulled within 14-10 on an impressive drive in the third quarter, culminating with Jeff Sims tossing a 13-yard TD pass to 6-foot-7 transfer E.J. Jenkins. But Uiagalelie, in what was probably the play of the game, appeared headed for a sack when he was cornered by two Georgia Tech defenders on the third-and-4. But the quarterback managed to stay upright just long enough to flip a lateral to Shipley, who rumbled 10 yards for a first down that kept the Clemson offense on the field. The Tigers went on to drive 74 yards for a touchdown that finally buried the Yellow Jackets. Uiagalelie ran it in from 9 yards out to push Clemson's lead to 24-10. Clemson scored its first touchdown on special teams after both teams had early struggles on offense. - AP College Football

Syracuse starting linebacker Stefon Thompson and fullback Chris Elmore will miss the rest of the season with lower-body injuries, coach Dino Babers said Monday. Both were hurt in the first half of the Orange's 31-7 victory over Louisville on Saturday night. Babers said they likely will be redshirted this year. The 6-foot-1, 235-pound Thompson, had to be helped off the field. A starter since his first year in 2020, he finished second on the team last season with 79 tackles, had six sacks among his eight tackles behind the line of scrimmage, and forced two fumbles. He had three tackles against the Cardinals before the injury. The 6-foot, 285-pound Elmore is in his sixth season and has played several positions in his career. All-American running back Sean Tucker also was shaken up at the end of a carry just before halftime and was looked at by team trainers before gingerly walking off the field. He returned for the second half. - AP College Football

  09/05/22 - Jordan TravisrSr/2024, Florida State, 6-1, 203 (DS#10 QB) + More +

Shyheim Brown blocked LSU's extra-point attempt with no time left to give Florida State a 24-23 victory Sunday night, spoiling Brian Kelly's debut as Tigers coach. Despite a slew of mistakes including a muffed punt with 2:15 left, LSU came within the extra point of tying it in the wild finish. Florida State's Treshaun Ward fumbled at the LSU 1 with 1:20 to go, and Tigers quarterback Jayden Daniels drove LSU for a touchdown on a 2-yard pass to Jaray Jenkins with no time left. With LSU fans celebrating an apparent two-touchdown comeback in the final 4:07 - and Florida State fans bracing themselves for what could have gone down as an infamous implosion - Brown deflected Damian Ramos' kick, touching off a Florida State celebration during which players wildly rushed the field.

Jordan Travis passed for 260 yards and two touchdowns for Florida State. Travis' scoring passes came on a 39-yard throw to Ontaria Wilson on a flea flicker and a 27-yard pass that Wilson corralled with one hand while being interfered with. Travis also rushed for 31 yards on a combination of designed runs and scrambles, repeatedly leaving LSU pass rushers grasping air as he spun or darted away from pressure. Tens of thousands garnet and gold-clad spectators helped sell-out the Superdome, virtually negating what could have been a home advantage for LSU in a game played just 80 miles from its Baton Rouge campus. And they left happy after Florida State (2-0) - coming off four straight losing seasons - prolonged a promising start to coach Mike Norvell's third season in charge. - Florida State/AP College Football

  08/21/22 - Keon ColemanJr/2024, Florida State, 6-3, 213 (DS#10 WR) + More +

Keon Coleman has already proven himself capable of playing both football and basketball at Michigan State. To the 6-foot-4, 210-pound sophomore from Louisiana, however, there is one role he's happy to avoid - being a defensive coordinator trying to game plan for the Spartans' offense. "They're gonna be in a panic trying to game plan against us," Coleman declared. It's quite the statement about what the Michigan State offense might become this fall, and one that might seem like a bit of grand-standing, considering the fact the Spartans won't have Kenneth Walker III to hand the ball off to and the fact wide receiver Jalen Nailor joined the star running back by entering last spring's NFL Draft. Throw in the lack of experienced depth on the offensive line and there could be some cause for concern when it comes to a unit that ranked third in the Big Ten last season, averaging 31.3 points a game.

Of course, Payton Thorne is back at quarterback after throwing for a school-record 27 touchdowns last year, and he has his share of weapons, including the wide receiver group of Jayden Reed, Tre Mosely and Coleman, along with a potential group of difference-makers at tight end and a large group of running backs eager to pick up where Walker left off. To Coleman, it makes life difficult for opponents. As he calls it, the Spartans' offense will rely on a "frenzy" of options. "It's like a behavior that they can't control," Coleman explained. "Since they would have their best corner on Jayden with the safety over top, that leaves three defensive backs on the backside for me, Tre and a tight end. Or me, Tre and another receiver. Like, the defensive coordinator is gonna panic. He might pull his hair out because he's gonna be like, 'How can we defend all of these weapons?' And our quarterback can run, too, and our running backs can catch it out of the backfield. "They're gonna have to dial some stuff up." - Detroit News

  08/18/22 - Jaheim BellrJr/2024, Florida State, 6-2, 241 (DS#1 FB) + More +

It's a compliment. Jaheim Bell knows that. But for his own motivation, and more so his personal feelings, he will politely tell you he doesn't want to be compared to anybody. Not even multi-purpose NFL star Deebo Samuel. "As far as being compared to Deebo, I really don't like that. I'm one of one. I'm myself," he demurred. "I really don't want to be compared to the next guy." Bell broke out as a sophomore in 2021, catching 30 passes for 497 yards and five touchdowns. He also had five carries for 40 carries and a 22-yard kickoff return scattered throughout 12 regular-season games. His six-catch, 136-yard performance against Vanderbilt was the best game by a tight end in school history. At a school that has produced first-round NFL Draft pick tight ends like Willie Scott and Hayden Hurst, not to mention third-rounder and 13-year NFL vet Jared Cook, that stands out.

Yet he did himself one better in the Duke's Mayo Bowl, hauling in five balls for 159 yards and two touchdowns while adding three carries for 21 yards. If North Carolina didn't know who Bell was after he took the Gamecocks' first play of the game 20 yards on an off-tackle run, they did two plays later when he plucked a pass from Dakereon Joyner and raced 69 yards for a touchdown. He only needed three plays to score again, trotting a ball and a neon-lit "IT'S OVER" sign into the end zone with him. The Tar Heels found out what the rest of the world was quickly discovering. Jaheim Bell is a major talent. Just like Deebo Samuel is. And because they do so many things for their respective teams, and because Samuel is a USC alum, Bell had the Deebo label taped to him before he knew it was peeled off the contact sheet. "They are different, but they're both strong, athletic, they both make plays with the ball in their hands," USC tight ends coach Jody Wright said. "They both line up in multiple positions." - The Post and Courier

  08/17/22 - DJ UiagaleleirSr/2025, Florida State, 6-4, 229 (DS#32 QB) + More +

Speaking Monday, offensive coordinator Brandon Streeter added that DJ Uiagalelei "has a lot of confidence right now in moving around, escaping the pocket and creating plays with his feet" now that he's fully recovered from a knee injury that bothered him through the 2021 season. "He showed that a lot on Saturday," Streeter said, "and, man, he did some really, really good stuff. I'm excited to see how he does it this fall." In his previous roles as Clemson quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator, first-year offensive coordinator Streeter has seen how effective quarterback runs - both scripted and unscripted - can force a defense to play on its toes.

Designed runs and scrambles were key parts of Clemson's offense with Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence, both of whom led the Tigers to College Football Playoff national championships and were Heisman Trophy finalists. "Every quarterback's a little bit different on what type of runs we call for the quarterback," Streeter said, "but that's a big part of this offense." Uiagalelei has never been a run-first quarterback. He was the country's top pro-style passer coming out of high school in California and flashed those skills as a true freshman. Now, above all else, he's keen on improving his mechanics after ranking as the ACC's least efficient quarterback during a nine-touchdown, 10-interception 2021 campaign. If his overall improvement leads to a more dual-threat role, though, he's all for it "I feel light on my feet, man," Uiagalelei said. "I feel ready to go." - The State
