  08/17/22 - Jordan TravisrSr/2024, Florida State, 6-1, 203 (DS#10 QB) + More +

Ask Jordan Travis where he's improved the most since last season and the Florida State quarterback will tell you it's all about confidence. It's that belief in himself that's helped the redshirt junior earn the trust of his teammates and coaches as Travis prepares to be the Seminoles starter. It's a long time coming for the West Palm Beach product, who split time with McKenzie Milton as injuries limited him to eight starts last season. "It's 100% different. I'm more confident in whatever I do out there," Travis said. "I can put the ball up. I have great running backs and a [offensive] line that can block for me. I feel great."

Coach Mike Norvell credited Travis' development throughout preseason camp, noting that he completed more than 70% of his passes during a limited role in Saturday's second scrimmage. "He wasn't out there very long, but he made some good choices," said Norvell. "He ended up getting three series and moved the ball positively." Travis worked tirelessly with his receivers in the offseason in player-led practices and summer workouts. The additional work hasn't gone unnoticed and is paying dividends. "I've grown a lot," he said. "I'm making throws that I've never made before, but there is still a lot of room for improvement. I'm throwing every single day, pushing and watching lots of film. I will keep growing and my teammates have helped me a lot with that, giving me the confidence I need. The coaches have given me the confidence that I need." - Orlando Sentinel

  08/17/22 - Jared VerserJr/2024, Florida State, 6-4, 254 (DS#2 DE) + More +

The Seminoles would love Verse to make the same kind of impact as Jermaine Johnson, another transfer defensive lineman who came over from Georgia and performed well enough his lone year at Florida State to get selected by the New York Jets with the 26th overall pick. Verse had 14 ½ sacks and 21 1/2 tackle for loss in 15 games at Albany before moving up to the Football Bowl Subdivision level. Another transfer pass rusher to watch is Nebraska’s Ochaun Mathis, a second-team all-Big 12 pick each of the last two seasons at TCU. - AP College Football

Jammie Robinson on his mentality: "I'm a senior in college now. This year I'm locked in for sure. It's all-in for sure. Gotta get the ball. That's how I'm going to get that money. That's my main thing, getting the ball, making plays, being the guy that Coach is going to call on as that playmaker. I want to be a playmaker. Just being that student of the game, knowing what coverage we're in and what the offense can run to beat that coverage. Just being smart." - Richmond Times-Dispatch

  08/16/22 - DJ UiagaleleirSr/2025, Florida State, 6-4, 229 (DS#32 QB) + More +

When running back Kobe Pace has the ear of his quarterback, D.J. Uiagalelei, he offers a piece of advice that sounds more like a reminder. "Just be you, man," Pace said. "Nobody has to go out there in front of 80,000 people and throw a ball but you. You gotta do that. So that's what you do. That's your responsibility." Uiagalelei, the former five-star recruit, came into last season with his potential greatness compared to the realized greatness of Trevor Lawrence. After an uneven first season as Clemson's starter, the big-armed quarterback has faced questions about whether he is, in fact, good enough. There was nothing but empty concrete staring back at Uiagalelei and Clemson's offense on Aug. 13 as they entered Memorial Stadium for a preseason scrimmage.

But it was a moment where Uiagalelei answered some questions. The entire offense did. "Honestly, I kinda saw that comin'," Swinney said. "I told the defense, it was very competitive." In Swinney's experience, the defense is usually ahead of the offense early in preseason camp. And this is supposed to be one of the more talented defenses Clemson has had in a while. But the results of the first scrimmage, as relayed by Swinney, continue the optimistic appraisals of Uiagalelei's growth. Part of his maturity is actually a reduction, slimming down from over 260 pounds to just under 235. With that noticeably lighter frame, Uiagalelei made plays in the scrimmage that wouldn't have been possible a year ago. "I'm proud of D.J.," Swinney said. "He made two or three big plays with his legs." - Charleston Post Courier

  08/12/22 - Kayden LylesrSr/2023, Florida State, 6-2, 315 (DS#999 C) + More +

Florida State offensive lineman Kayden Lyles will miss this upcoming season with an injury. Lyles, a graduate transfer from Wisconsin, announced the news on social media Wednesday. "I know all too well that injuries are a part of playing football at the highest level. Unfortunately, I will not be able to be on the field this season, but I came to Florida State to make an impact on this program and that is still what I will do," Lyles posted on Twitter. "We have a group of dedicated offensive linemen, and I am going to use the experiences I've gained through five years of playing college football to help them develop any way I can. "Thank you to everyone for the support. I'm going to approach every day with the mindset of improvement, and I'm looking forward to seeing what this team will do this season." Coach Mike Norvell addressed Lyles' status following practice, confirming the injury happened last week. "I hate it for him just for the work he's put in," said Norvell. "He's done a great job since he's got here. We'll explore all options moving forward. "He's going to actively be a part of what we're doing but unfortunately it won't be on the field for us this year." - Orlando Sentinel

Florida State linebackers coach Randy Shannon knows that for the Seminoles succeed this season, they'll need to create negative plays on defense. Through the first two weeks of preseason camp and after Saturday's scrimmage, Shannon's group has met those expectations. "We felt like we've got a good group of new kids, guys that can do a lot of different things, playing different positions and making a lot of negative plays," said Shannon. "We felt like we created more negative plays. We're excited by the group and excited about what direction we are going." The linebackers are among the most well-rounded units on the team.

The addition of UCF transfer Tatum Bethune has solidified a group that features experience with Kalen DeLoach, Amari Gainer, DJ Lundy and young talent in redshirt sophomore Stephen Dix Jr. and true freshman Omar Graham Jr. "We're doing a lot of rotation with the linebackers," said Shannon. "Everybody's playing with the ones and everybody's playing with the twos, everybody is with the threes. It's about getting better and building at depth at linebacker." Bethune reunites with Shannon, who recruited him when he was defensive coordinator with the Knights from 2018-20. The Miami native is coming off an All-American Athletic Conference season, where he led the team with 108 tackles, 2 sacks and 2 interceptions. The redshirt junior has provided a calming presence in the middle of the defense. - Orlando Sentinel

  08/10/22 - Squirrel WhiteSr/2026, Florida State, 5-09, 177 (DS#111 WR) + More +

A debate emerged earlier this week regarding the fastest player on Tennessee's football roster, with junior receiver Jimmy Holiday, sophomore running back Jaylen Wright, freshman running back Dylan Sampson and freshman receiver Squirrel White being the primary candidates. There is no question as to the lightest player for the Volunteers. At 5-foot-10 and just 160 pounds, White needs 20 pounds to catch the next-lightest Vols player, junior receiver Jalin Hyatt. In April, Hyatt admitted to eating six times a day in his attempt to pack on pounds.

Being the smallest on the field is something White was used to way before becoming a three-star prospect at Clay-Chalkville High School in Pinson, Alabama, which is roughly 20 miles north of Birmingham. "I've had to be tough my whole life, and that started with backyard football and playing with my brothers," White said in a news conference. "We used to play tackle, and I would cry sometimes, but then I'd get right back up and go at it." The Vols had an off day on Friday after practicing Monday through Thursday. White, who enrolled in January, has managed to counter his smaller frame with blazing speed, which was evidenced by his second-place finishes at the AHSAA track meet during his junior year at Clay-Chalkville, running the 100-meter dash in 10.68 seconds and the 200 in 21.58. He committed to the Vols last summer and then produced a senior football season that contained 49 receptions for 1,162 yards and 16 touchdowns. - Chattanooga Times Free Press

  08/06/22 - DJ UiagaleleirSr/2025, Florida State, 6-4, 229 (DS#32 QB) + More +

DJ Uiagalelei dealt with lingering finger and knee injuries last season, Swinney said, but the quarterback confirmed he's fully healthy entering preseason camp. He should benefit, too, from continuity and health along Clemson's offensive line, which got rolling during the Tigers' late-season six-game winning streak and returns four starters. Uiagalelei also has a haul of returning skill position players, which includes a three-headed monster at running back and a number of experienced wide receivers and tight ends, at his disposal.

At that point, it'll be up to Uiagalelei and Uiagalelei alone to rise above sophomore struggles and meet Clemson's sky-high expectations, as well as his sky-high expectations for himself. Easier said than, Swinney acknowledges, but attainable for his QB1. "It's a game of performance, and you can't change that," Swinney said. "I can talk about how great he is all day long. He has to go do it. (But) I believe in him, and there ain't no doubt about that." - The State
