2022 WUERFFEL TROPHY WINNER: OL Dillan Gibbons, Florida State,...Florida State offensive lineman Dillan Gibbons is the winner of the 2022 Wuerffel Trophy, it was announced Thursday evening live on ESPN's The Home Depot College Football Awards Show. The Wuerffel Trophy, established in 2005 and named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel, is presented annually to the FBS player who best combines exemplary community service with leadership achievement on and off the field. Gibbons is the first winner of college football's premier award for community service from the ACC and only the second from a Florida school, joining 2008 winner Tim Tebow. Gibbons will be recognized during the Heisman Trophy festivities this weekend in New York City and will be officially presented his trophy in February at the All Sports Association Awards Banquet in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

Gibbons, who was voted captain of the 2022 Allstate Good Works Team and winner of this year's Jim Tatum Award as the ACC's top senior football scholar-athlete, has established a non-profit foundation to raise funds for those in need. His foundation partners with collegiate ambassadors across college football and connects with charitable causes they are passionate about, including those with special medical needs, shopping with children in the community and repairing damage caused by natural disasters. His efforts have resulted in nearly $500,000 being raised to support meaningful causes throughout the college football community. Gibbons earned first-team All-ACC accolades as he blocked for one of the most explosive and efficient offenses in the country this season. Florida State leads the nation with 88 plays of at least 20 yards and is second nationally with seven touchdown drives of at least 90 yards and with 15 touchdown drives of 80-plus yards. - Florida State Football

2022 JIM TATUM AWARD WINNER: Florida State offensive guard Dillan Gibbons has been named the recipient of the 2022 Jim Tatum Award, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced Monday. The award is given annually in memory of the late Jim Tatum to the top senior student-athlete among the league's football players. Tatum, a two-time ACC Coach of the Year, coached in the 1950s at both Maryland and North Carolina and believed strongly in the concept of the student-athlete. Gibbons made his mark as one of the league's top offensive linemen upon transferring from Notre Dame last season, and the Florida State senior's academic accomplishments are equally impressive.

Sporting a career GPA above 3.5, Gibbons already owns a bachelor's degree in Management and Consulting from the prestigious Mendoza College of Business at Notre Dame and is putting the finishing touches on his MBA from Florida State. In addition to his work in the classroom, Gibbons has raised more than $450,000 for several charitable causes through his Big Man Big Heart non-profit organization, which he established to honor the memory and legacy of Hall of Fame coach Bobby Bowden. On the playing field, Gibbons helped the Seminoles (9-3) rush for more than 200 yards in each of their final seven regular-season games, the longest active streak in the nation and the longest for FSU since 1987. - ACC Football

The plan for offensive lineman Dillan Gibbons as April became May was to open the 2021 college football season Labor Day Sunday Night at Doak Campbell Stadium. That plan hasn't changed for Gibbons, even after he announced less than a week ago his intention to leave the Notre Dame football program as a graduate transfer. Less than a week after making that decision official, Gibbons found his new school. It's one that will play his old school on that Labor Day Sunday Night in the 2021 opener for both programs. Gibbons announced via social media late Monday that he would enroll at Florida State University. Gibbons will have immediate eligibility and possibly two seasons of eligibility remaining. - South Bend Tribune

The covert storyline that really never made it into the mainstream was just how steep the climb was in overcoming multiple debilitating injuries for Dillan Gibbons to become relevant on the Notre Dame football depth chart. Now the Irish offensive lineman will chase the happily-ever-after part of the saga. But somewhere else. The 6-foot-4, 309-pound Madeira Beach, Fla., product announced on Thursday via Twitter that he was entering the transfer portal, roughly two weeks before he picks up his Notre Dame degree. Gibbons, a three-star recruit who played his high school ball at Clearwater Central Catholic, played in 29 games for the Irish, including the lone start of his career - on Senior Day against Syracuse on Dec. 5. He redshirted as a freshman in 2017 and earned Offensive Scout Team Player of the Year honors at season's end. - South Bend Tribune
