  2021 ALL-CAA FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM (COACHES): Cole Coleman, Elon, S, Jr.,...Coleman was a major factor in Elon's #MayhemDefense performance throughout 2021. He finished with a team-best 71 tackles, adding 4.0 for loss and a sack against New Hampshire. His was a big-play maker with three forced fumbles and an interception. Coleman also had a blocked kick against William & Mary and ended the year with three pass break-ups. Coleman had a season-best 10 tackles against William & Mary and had six or more eight times.   2021 ALL-CAA FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM (COACHES): Jackson Parham, Elon, WR, Jr.,...Parham was named first team All-CAA after leading Elon with 57 receptions for 820 yards. He ranked third in the CAA in both statistics. He caught 10 passes for 106 yards against William & Mary and added a career-best 122 receptions, on six catches, in a win over New Hampshire. Parham made his presence felt immediately, opening the season with seven catches for 99 yards against Wofford and had 91 yards receiving in the team's win over No. 25 Rhode Island to end the campaign. Parham had at least two catches in every contest during the 2021 season. - Elon Football

  2021 CAA FOOTBALL CHUCK BOONE LEADERSHIP AND EXCELLENCE AWARD (COACHES): Davis Cheek, Elon,...Cheek is the recipient of the prestigious Chuck Boone Leadership and Excellence Award, an honor that embodies the highest standards of leadership, integrity, teamwork and sportsmanship in academics and athletics. The Elon quarterback earned all-conference honors after completing 253-of-397 passes for 2,924 yards and 17 touchdowns this season. The Phoenix team captain was a semifinalist for the prestigious Campbell Trophy, which is awarded to the top football scholar-athlete in the nation. Cheek, who was the CAA Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2020, graduated cum laude with a degree in strategic communications and is working towards his MBA. - CAA Football

  Jaylan Thomas ran for 135 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns and Elon beat FCS No. 25-ranked Rhode Island 43-28 on Saturday. Thomas' 15-yard scoring run with 2:15 left in the first quarter made it 14-7 and Elon peeled away from there. Elon (6-5, 5-3 Colonial Athletic Association) finishes with its first winning record since the 2018 team went 6-5. It's also the first five-win conference effort since 2017. Elon closed the year with two consecutive wins and defeated two teams that were ranked at the time of play. The Phoenix also beat then No. 21-ranked Richmond 20-7 in October. Rhode Island's (7-4, 4-4) two-game win streak came to an end. In a season of runs, the Rams started with five straight wins, followed with three straight defeats then won back-to-back. Kasim Hill threw for 394 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions for the Rams. - AP College Football

  McKinley Witherspoon ran for a pair of scores and Davis Cheek threw for one and Elon never trailed in its 37-14 win against Towson on Saturday. Witherspoon ran for 1-yard score for a 7-0 lead before Skyler Davis made a career-long, 52-yard field goal late in the first quarter. Davis added a 28-yarder with 10:29 before halftime for a 13-0 lead. Vincent Amendola got Towson on the board with a 5-yard scoring run at the end of a nine-play, 73-yard drive five minutes later. But the Phoenix (5-5, 4-3 Colonial Athletic Association) countered with a 10-play, 75-yard drive that ended with Witherspoon carrying it in from 1 and a 20-7 margin with 2:07 before halftime. Jerry Howard Jr. ran for 126 yards on 17 carries for the Tigers. Towson (4-6, 3-4) has lost back-to-back games and three of its last four. - AP College Football

  Davis Cheek threw two touchdown passes - including a 58-yarder to Bryson Daughtry on Elon's second play from scrimmage - and ran for a score as the Phoenix turned backed New Hampshire 24-10 in Colonial Athletic Association play on Saturday. Cheek completed 27 of 31 passes for 328 yards with one interception for Elon (4-3, 3-1) and his TD strike to Daughtry staked the Phoenix to a 7-0 lead just 43 seconds into the game. New Hampshire (3-4, 2-2) rallied to take a 10-7 lead, scoring on Bret Edwards' 5-yard TD toss to Griffin Helm with 6:16 left in the first quarter and Sean Lehane's 36-yard field goal 51 seconds into the second, but the Wildcats wouldn't score again. Cheek's 3-yard TD run capped a 10-play, 86-yard drive with 1:23 left before halftime, giving the Phoenix the lead for good. Elon pulled away with Cheek's 18-yard TD throw to Chandler Brayboy and Skyler Davis' 45-yard field goal in the third quarter. Jackson Parham finished with six receptions for 122 yards. The Phoenix were held to 54 yards rushing on 30 carries. Edwards completed 16 of 30 passes for 127 yards with one interception for New Hampshire, which was held to 214 yards of offense. - AP College Football

  Matthew McKay passed for two touchdowns, Isaiah Ifanse ran for two and Montana State cruised to a 45-7 win over Cal Poly on Saturday. The Bobcats (5-1, 3-0 Big Sky Conference) broke the game open with 28 points in the second quarter for a 35-0 lead. Ifanse had a 12-yard scoring reception to go with a pair of short touchdown runs and backup quarterback Tommy Mellott broke free for a 74-yard score. McKay, who was 14 of 18 for 163 yards, also threw a touchdown pass to Treyton Pickering in the first quarter. Montana State had four interceptions, highlighted by Callahan O'Reilly's pick-6 in the third quarter. Later in the third, Shakobe Harper scored the only touchdown for the Mustangs (1-5, 0-3). The Bobcats had a 441-264 advantage in total offense and scored 21 points off turnovers. - AP College Football

  Davis Cheek passed for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth to lead Elon's 33-23 victory over Maine on Saturday. After Cheek's 1-yard touchdown run gave Elon (3-3, 2-1 Colonial) a 26-10 lead in the third quarter, Maine's Trevin Ewing returned the ensuing kickoff 96-yards for a touchdown. The Black Bears (1-4, 0-3) drew even closer, 26-23, when Zavier Scott scored on an 8-yard run later in the third. McKinley Witherspoon's 2-yard TD run put the Phoenix back up by 10 early in the fourth quarter. Cheek completed 29 of 37 passes for 332 yards. His touchdown passes were 9 yards to Donovan Williams, 30 yards to Jaylan Thomas and 39 yards to Bryson Daughtry, all in the first half when Elon built a 19-10 lead. Derek Robertson went 19 of 32 for 283 and a touchdown for the Black Bears. Andre Miller caught eight passes for 176 yards. There were no turnovers in the game. - AP College Football

The Phoenix held the Spiders scoreless over the final 50 minutes of the contest and stopped UR on three second-half possessions that ended inside the 5-yard line.   Davis Cheek threw a go-ahead touchdown pass and McKinley Witherspoon added a fourth-quarter scoring run as Elon spotted Richmond an early lead before cruising to a 20-7 victory in Colonial Athletic Association play on Saturday. Beau English staked Richmond to a 7-0 first-quarter lead with a 33-yard scoring strike to Aaron Dykes. Skyler Davis pulled the Phoenix (2-3, 1-1) within four points with a 35-yard field goal early in the second quarter and Cheek gave them the lead for good when he connected with Bryson Daughtry from 14 yards out to make it 10-7 at halftime. Witherspoon pushed Elon's lead to 10 with a 6-yard TD run at the 11:18 mark of the fourth quarter and Davis capped the scoring with a 48-yard field goal. Cheek completed 18 of 30 passes for 197 yards. English completed 21 of 42 passes for 193 yards for the Spiders (2-3, 0-2). Richmond outgained the Phoenix 338-304 and had nine more first downs but turned the ball over twice. - AP College Football

  Isaiah Ifanse ran for 217 yards, Matthew McKay threw a pair of touchdown passes in the second half, and Montana State beat Portland State 30-17 on Saturday in the Big Sky Conference opener for both teams. McKay threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Lance McCutcheon to give Montana State (3-1, 1-0) a 23-17 lead late in the third quarter. McKay added a 9-yard TD pass to Jaharie Martin that capped the scoring with about nine minutes remaining. McKay was 14-of-21 passing for 225 yards. McCutcheon made eight catches for 161 yards. Ifanse ran 30 times that included a 9-yard touchdown run. Davis Alexander completed 18 of 32 passes for 266 yards and threw a touchdown pass for Portland State (1-3, 0-1). - AP College Football

  Matthew McKay threw for two touchdowns and Montana State used a pair of second quarter pick-6's and the Bobcats routed San Diego 52-10 on Saturday. McKay threw a 7-yard score to Derryk Snell and a 65-yarder to Elijah Elliott in a little more than a 5-1/2-minute span in the first quarter. Isaiah Ifanse - who ran for 109 yards on 10 carries - added a 9-yard touchdown run to end the first. On the Torreros first drive of the second, Ty Okada picked off Mason Randall and returned it 72 yards for a four-score lead. Later, with 2:39 before halftime, Troy Anderson intercepted Randall and ran it back 40 yards for a 35-0 Bobcats (2-1) lead. Jaharie Martin started the third with a 1-yard touchdown run that followed Ifanse's 74-yard jaunt to the goal line on the first play of the second half.   Matthew McKay threw three touchdown passes, including two to Willie Patterson, and Montana State beat Drake 45-7 on Saturday night. McKay was 19-of-25 passing for 256 yards with no interceptions and added eight carries for 61 yards. Lance McCutcheon had seven receptions for 121 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown. Montana State (1-1) opened the scoring when Blake Glessner kicked a 29-yard field goal fewer than four minutes into the game. McKay connected with Patterson for a 23-yard touchdown on the final play of the first quarter and Patterson's 31-yard TD catch midway through the second quarter made it 16-0.   Davis Cheek threw a pair of touchdown passes and Elon's late defensive stop on a two-point conversion gave the Phoenix a 24-23 win over Campbell on Saturday. Hajj-Malik Williams threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Snead with 1:11 remaining to bring the Camels within 24-23, but Elon's defense stuffed the run attempt for two to secure it. Williams threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Jai Williams and Campbell led 17-7 with 9:57 left in the third. Elon (1-1) responded when Cheek led a nine-play, 70-yard scoring drive that ended with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Chandler Brayboy 3 1/2 minutes later. Following Tre'Von Jones' interception of Williams, Elon took advantage of the short field. With 9:46 left in the fourth, McKinley Witherspoon ploughed in from four yards out to cap a 28-yard drive and the Phoenix led the rest of the way.   FEB 22 CAA FOOTBALL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Cole Coleman, Jr., DB, Elon (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road),...Coleman registered a career-high 17 tackles, including 14 solo stops, in Elon's 26-23 season-opening win over Davidson. The 17 stops were nearly twice as many as any other player on the Phoenix defense.
