  12/02/19 - QB Matthew McKayrSr/2023, Elon, 6-3, 225 (DS#42 QB) + More +

North Carolina State quarterback Matthew McKay says he has entered his name in the transfer portal. The redshirt sophomore announced his plans in a social media post Sunday. He started the first five games before being replaced by Bailey Hockman, who was later replaced by Devin Leary as the Wolfpack struggled to find consistency at the position. McKay completed 86 of 150 passes for 910 yards and three touchdowns with one interception, though he struggled to connect downfield. N.C. State (4-8, 1-7 Atlantic Coast Conference) closed the season with Saturday's 41-10 loss to rival North Carolina and missed a bowl for the first time since 2013. - AP College Football

  08/31/19 - QB Matthew McKayrSr/2023, Elon, 6-3, 225 (DS#42 QB) + More +

Matthew McKay never looked overwhelmed as he made his first start for North Carolina State at quarterback. The redshirt sophomore ran for two touchdowns and threw for another while N.C. State overcame a shaky start to shut down East Carolina's ground game to beat the Pirates 34-6 in Saturday's season opener for both teams. McKay completed 25 of 37 passes for 308 yards, becoming only the third quarterback in school history and first in a dozen years to crack the 300-yard mark in his first career start.

"The first play I went out there, I took a deep breath and said, 'OK we're playing football,'" McKay said, "So not nervous or anything, just definitely prepared for my moment." He looked that way, too. McKay scored on a 4-yard keeper just before halftime for a 17-3 lead, then got loose around the left side and dove for the pylon for a 21-yard score early in the fourth. McKay also found a wide-open Tabari Hines on the right side for a 48-yard touchdown in the third as the Wolfpack broke the game open. - AP College Football

  08/26/19 - QB Matthew McKayrSr/2023, Elon, 6-3, 225 (DS#42 QB) + More +

Matt McKay will start the season at quarterback for North Carolina State. The redshirt sophomore was listed atop the depth chart released Monday for the Wolfpack's opener against East Carolina. Florida State transfer Bailey Hockman is his backup and redshirt freshman Devin Leary as the third-stringer. Coach Dave Doeren says McKay separated himself with his "accuracy, his leadership and his ability to really protect the team with his decision-making." McKay completed 7 of 8 passes last season for 87 yards and added 36 yards rushing with a touchdown in the home win over Georgia State. The three-man competition had been the key position battle during preseason camp for N.C. State, which must replace three-year starter Ryan Finley. - AP College Football
