Troy head coach Chip Lindsey announced Thursday that Taylor Powell will be the Trojans' starting quarterback heading into the team's season opener against Southern next weekend. The announcement ends a QB battle between Powell and Gunnar Watson, which began in the spring. "Both guys competed extremely hard and both of them improved a great deal," Lindsey said. "Anytime you have competition like that, it makes everyone better. This year we're going into the season with the luxury of having two guys that have played college football and that's always a plus. At the end of the day, it's a competition and we have to go with one guy. We feel like Taylor is going to give us the best opportunity to win as a football team."

Powell, a junior on the field, joined the Trojans in January after transferring into the program from Missouri. A former Mr. Football in the state of Arkansas, Powell started one game in his career - at Georgia - for the Tigers and saw action in 12 total contests. He sat out the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns and graduated from Missouri in three years. He led Fayetteville High School to a pair of Arkansas 7A state titles (2015, 2016) and threw for 3,473 yards and 44 touchdowns as a senior. He ranks fifth in Arkansas prep history with 10,431 career passing yards and eighth with 113 touchdown passes. - Troy Messenger

Troy newcomer Taylor Powell is in a battle for the starting quarterback position with last year's starter Gunnar Watson. It's been a busy offseason for the Troy newcomer. Along with participating in the Manning Passing Academy, Powell has spent every possible moment either on the field or mentally preparing for the upcoming season by studying the playbook and watching film. "Just grinding with the guys, watching a lot of film," Powell said. "Early mornings, throwing and meeting with the guys. Just trying to get the offense on the same page. I feel like we are where we need to be heading into fall camp." Powell comes to Troy after playing parts of two seasons for the Missouri Tigers.

Powell saw action in six games in 2018 and 2019. He completed 35-of-75 passes for 431 yards. He had one start in his sophomore season in 2019. Powell arrived at Troy in time for spring practice. At the start of fall camp, Powell believes he is more comfortable with the offense. "In the spring everybody goes through their growing pains with a new offense," Powell said. "Now, I feel like we are really clicking. I'm super comfortable and I feel like I'm executing what coach is calling. I'm excited and very comfortable." - Troy Messenger

Senior center Mike Van Hoeven (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) was named Second Team CoSIDA Academic-All America on Monday, July 12, making him just the third football player in Eastern Michigan University history to be an Academic All-American. The previous Academic All-American were Corey Annett grabbing second team honors in 2001 and Cy Maughmer adding second team accolades in 2013. EMU was one of just three Mid-American Conference programs to have a representative on the all-american teams.

Van Hoeven - who was also CoSIDA Academic All-District in 2018 and 2019 - is the first Eastern Michigan football student-athlete to be recognized three times in a career. Dubbed "one of the hardest working men" on the team by Head Coach Chris Creighton, Van Hoeven played an important role in the EMU offense in 2020. Named to the Rimington Trophy watch list, the award given annually to the nation's best center, Van Hoeven started all six games for the Green and White as the team's center. - Ann Arbor News
