Taylor Powell threw for three touchdowns, Samson Evans ran for three and Jose Ramirez set an Eastern Michigan record for sacks as the Eagles rolled to a 45-23 win over Western Michigan on Saturday. The win for the Eagles (4-2, 1-1 Mid-American Conference) was their fourth straight in the series and follows a five-game string by the Broncos (2-4, 1-1), the longest in the 57-game series. Samson opened the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run and then Powell hit Dylan Drummond with a 2-yard pass to cap an 11-play, 88-yard drive and a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Samson added TD runs of 1 and 6 yards in the second quarter. Powell found Darius Lassiter for 38 yards in the second, for a 35-7 halftime lead, and Hassan Beydoun in the third. Ramirez had four of the seven sacks by the defense, which held Western to 91 yards on the ground, just one more yard than Samson had. Powell as 20 of 30 for 293 yards and Lassiter, a junior college transfer, had his first 100-yard game, getting 104 on six catches. Jack Salopek threw for two touchdowns for the Broncos but was just 15 of 40 for 208 yards. - Eastern Michigan/AP College Football

SEPT 19 MAC WEST DIVISION OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Samson Evans, Eastern Michigan, Running Back, Senior, Crystal Lake, Ill.,...Senior running back Samson Evans put together a career night in EMU's win over ASU. The Crystal Lake, Ill. native carried the ball 36 times for 258 yards on the ground with one touchdown, an average of 7.2 yards per carry on the night. Evans also pulled in one pass for seven yards and returned one kickoff for 21 yards to finish the game with 286 all-purpose yards. The ground game, which finished with 305 yards against the Sun Devils, saw Evans record the third-highest rush total in program history and just the sixth 250-yard-plus game in program history, the first since the 2013 season (Bronson Hill, 257 vs. Ohio University, Oct. 19, 2013).

Evans, who entered the game with a career-best 89 yards rushing against Eastern Kentucky University (Sept. 2) earlier this year, recorded 107 yards rushing in the fourth quarter alone as he averages 8.9 yards per carry. Additionally, when adding in his 55 yards from the third quarter, Evans' 162 yards in the second half ranks second among full game totals for the year in the MAC behind Lew Nichols' 166 total for Central Michigan against Bucknell (Sept. 17, 2022). His 258 yard effort is the best single-game total by any player in the NCAA this season. In addition to having the single-best rushing performance in the NCAA this season, senior Samson Evans has also been one of the most consistently good backs in the nation. He currently ranks 11th in the nation with 366 rushing yards. He is sixth in the country with a 122.0 rushing yards per game average. Additionally, Evans ranks first in the MAC and 18th nationally in all purpose yards, where he has averaged 142.33 per game in 2022. - MAC Football

Samson Evans had never run for 100 yards in a game at Eastern Michigan. He went way beyond that Saturday night. "Two years ago, if you had told me I'd have a game like this I don't know if I would have believed you," Evans said after carrying 35 times for 257 yards to lift the Eagles past Arizona State 30-21. "The O-line blocked phenomenally, there was a play where the receivers were blocking really well, the quarterback, everybody doing their job and I just capitalized on it." Evans had 96 yards by halftime - as the Eagles (2-1) never trailed in posting the Mid-American Conference's first victory over a Pac-12 team. "Samson's the real deal, he runs really hard. We really believe in him," Eastern Michigan coach Chris Creighton said. "We didn't run the ball particularly well in the first couple weeks and I think our guys wanted to prove that we can." Eastern Michigan scored on four of its five first-half possessions, with only an interception stopping the Eastern offense.

Arizona State (1-2), meanwhile, didn't get a first down until late in the first quarter, when they were already behind 10-0. Xazavian Valladay's 44-yard touchdown run with 10:48 to play cut Eastern Michigan's lead to 27-21 early in the fourth quarter. But Evans ran 32 yards on third-and-1 to give the Eagles a first down at the ASU 34. Evans carried on seven consecutive plays on the drive, which led to Jesus Gomez's third field goal, a 20-yarder to make it 30-21 with 4:24 to go. A fumble on ASU's next drive finished it off. Taylor Powell started at quarterback for the Eagles and completed 10 of 14 before being replaced by Austin Smith in the second quarter. The Eagles scored on their opening drive on Gomez's 27-yard field goal. Jaylon Jackson's 4-yard touchdown run capped an 11-play, 80-yard drive. Meanwhile, the Sun Devils went three-and-out in their first two series. - Eastern Michigan/AP College Football
