Cade McNamara was not only the highest-profile addition at Iowa this winter, but one of the highest-profile additions via the transfer portal across the country. The former Michigan quarterback lost the starting job to J.J. McCarthy in 2022, but he was a third-team all-Big Ten honoree on a 2021 team that went to the College Football Playoff. McNamara completed 63 percent of his passes and threw 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions in his Michigan career. Iowa also added ex-Wisconsin quarterback Deacon Hill from the portal. Hill appeared in one game with the Badgers but did not attempt a pass.

It's no secret McNamara is the presumed No. 1 quarterback next year, barring unforeseen circumstances. "Cade is going to be - well, we'll see how Joe and the rest of the guys do - but Cade's likely going to be our quarterback next year," Petras said last month. As McNamara recovers from knee surgery, Labas and Hill should have no shortage of spring practice reps. The biggest question facing McNamara will be how much support will he have around him. He has two tight ends who could potentially play in the NFL, but question marks remain at wide receiver, offensive line and play-calling. - The Gazette

Former Morrilton and North Carolina quarterback Jacolby Criswell has committed to Arkansas during his official visit to Fayetteville. Criswell, 6-1 and 225 pounds, entered the transfer portal on Monday and made his way to Arkansas Friday night to start his visit. He announced his pledge on Twitter with "Excited to be playing in my home state next season. Ready to get to work with the boys." He becomes the third scholarship quarterback on the roster. Georgia prep quarterback Malachi Singleton is expected to sign with the Razorbacks during the early signing period that runs Dec. 21-23.

Second-year starting quarterback KJ Jefferson recently announced his plans to return to Arkansas for the 2023 season. Criswell signed with the Tar Heels in 2020 as a consensus 4-star prospect. He also had offers from Arkansas, Georgia, Miami, Ole Miss, Auburn, Oklahoma State and other schools. He backed up the ACC's Associated Press Offensive Player of the Year, Drake Maye, this season and appeared in three games. He completed 2 of 6 passes for 9 yards, and rushed 4 times for 39 yards. - Northwest Arkansas Times

Quarterback has been one of the most scrutinized positions in Iowa football over the last few seasons. As the Hawkeyes enter into its bowl game later this month and subsequently the off-season, questions around the position still lingered. The biggest of all, would Iowa seek an option via the NCAA transfer portal. On Thursday night, one of the biggest transfer portal entries thus far announced his decision to join Iowa's program. Former Michigan quarterback Cade McNamara announced his transfer to Iowa via his Twitter account. The news was first reported by David Eickholt of 247sports and Pete Thamel of ESPN. During his career at Michigan, McNamara passed for over 3,000 yards and held a 3:1 touchdown to interception ratio. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

McNamara is most notable for leading Michigan to the 2021 Big Ten championship and College Football Playoff as the staring quarterback. During 2021 he passed for 2,576 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions while completing 64% of his passes. However, he lost a starting quarterback battle with current Michigan starter JJ McCarthy early in the 2022 season and served as Michigan's backup; his season later ended to a knee injury. His commitment to Iowa is the first of likely several additions via the NCAA transfer portal. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

Although action doesn't officially start until Monday, among the reported quarterbacks in transfer portal or planning to join as of Dec. 1 is Michigan's Cade McNamara: McNamara, who has two seasons of eligibility remaining, already has committed to Iowa out of the portal. He guided Michigan to the College Football Playoff as the Wolverines' starter last season, then lost his starting job this season to J.J. McCarthy. He is a game manager-type, and his decision to transfer to offense-challenged Iowa certainly is...interesting. - NFL Draft Scout and online sources

Cade McNamara, the backup quarterback at Michigan this season, has announced he'll transfer to Iowa. McNamara tweeted "New Beginning" with a picture of him in an Iowa uniform Thursday night. He presumably will go into next season as the front-runner for the starting job and have two seasons of eligibility. McNamara started every game for the Wolverines in 2021 but lost the job to J.J. McCarthy after the opener. McNamara appeared in the second and third games, taking a total of 16 snaps, and didn't play again.

The Hawkeyes (7-5) finished the regular season 130th out of 131 Bowl Subdivision teams in total offense and averaged just 17.4 points per game. Spencer Petras struggled most of the season as Iowa's starter and missed most of last week's game against Nebraska with an upper body injury. He has one year of eligibility, if he decides to use the waiver granted because of the COVID-19 season in 2020. Alex Padilla, who backed up Petras, is in the transfer portal. Joe Labas also is on the roster. - AP College Football

Michigan quarterback Cade McNamara has entered the transfer portal, team spokesman Dave Ablauf confirmed on Monday. McNamara had a season-ending injury to his right knee on Sept. 17 against Connecticut, one game after J.J. McCarthy won the starting job. McCarthy will lead the second-ranked Wolverines against Purdue on Saturday night in the Big Ten championship game in Indianapolis, needing a win to earn a spot in the College Football Playoff. Last year, McNamara helped Michigan end an eight-game losing streak to rival Ohio State and go on to win the conference championship for the first time since 2004. The third-team All-Big Ten player in 2021 threw for 2,576 yards with 15 touchdowns and six interceptions.

McNamara, who is from Reno, Nevada, can potentially play at another school for two seasons. He redshirted as a freshman in 2019 and the NCAA has given any student-athlete from the 2020-21 school year an extra year of eligibility. Coach Jim Harbaugh allowed McNamara and McCarthy to start a game this season before deciding who would be the first-string quarterback. That did not sit well with the returning starter. "I would definitely say it's pretty unusual," said McNamara, sounding surly, after a win over Colorado State in his last start. "It was kind of a thing that I wasn't expecting. By the end of camp, I thought I had my best camp and put myself in a good position." Earlier this month, McNamara posted a picture of himself in a wheelchair with a brace over a protective wrap on his right leg after being under the care of Los Angeles Rams and Dodgers team doctor Neal ElAttrache. - AP College Football
