  08/03/19 - Darrian BeaversrSr/2022, Cincinnati, 6-4, 243 (DS#9 OLB) + More +

Darrian Beavers' instincts took over on one play during Cincinnati Bearcats' football practice Friday. The junior linebacker took note of a bunch formation and launched off the line-of-scrimmage at the snap into position to disrupt a quick pass. "I just jumped it and the ball came to me and I picked it off," said the former Colerain High School star and UConn transfer. The play would have likely resulted in a touchdown in a game. And thanks to the NCAA's decision Thursday to grant Beavers and Alabama transfer safety Kyriq McDonald a waiver for immediate eligibility, the duo is on track to contribute this fall.

Beavers enrolled at Cincinnati eight months ago at 250. He's since dropped 25 pounds and says he's faster but maintained his strength. With the waiver decision behind him, Beavers said he's full-go to reach his goals this season. "I'm just staying focused on what I need to do to get as much playing time as I can," he said. "I'm learning the plays, getting in the playbook because some stuff goes fast and I've only been here for so long." - Cincinnati Enquirer

Kyriq McDonald and Darrian Beavers can take the field for the Cincinnati Bearcats this season. The NCAA granted the transfer defenders a waiver for immediate eligibility, UC confirmed Thursday. McDonald, a redshirt sophomore safety previously at Alabama, and Beavers, a junior linebacker previously at UConn, are expected to be contributors for the Bearcats this season. McDonald totaled seven tackles and a quarterback pressure through 11 games of action for the Crimson Tide last season. Beavers had 38 total tackles and seven sacks in two seasons for the Huskies. - Cincinnati Enquirer

2019 PRESEASON PAYCOM JIM THORPE AWARD WATCH LIST: James Wiggins, Cincinnati, Jr.,...Wiggins was a Second-Team All-AAC honoree in 2018 after tallying 54 tackles and four interceptions while showing a big-play flair in the secondary. He started his season by earning a spot on Bruce Feldman's annual list of the freakiest athletes in college football and showed it on the field with four game-changing interceptions. His first career interception was in the second quarter of the opener at UCLA, which led to a Warren TD, giving UC a lead it would not relinquish.

Interception No. 2 came in the waning minutes against Ohio when he jumped a route on the goal line to end the Bobcats scoring threat and seal the win for UC. Wiggins' third interception came in overtime at SMU, an 86-yard interception return for a TD which gave UC its first extra-period win since 2008. The 86-yard run back was the fourth longest in school history and longest since current UC CB coach Mike Mickens had a 79-yard INT return for a TD against USF in 2007. His final interception of the year came late in the fourth quarter of the Military Bowl when he tracked down and hauled in a Hokies pass to seal UC's first bowl win since 2012. - Cincinnati Football
