Daniel Richardson threw the go-ahead touchdown to Kalil Pimpleton with 3:55 left and Central Michigan held on to beat Ohio 30-27 on Saturday. The Chippewas proceeded to kill the clock from there. Richardson threw for 257 yards, the score to Pimpleton and two interceptions. Lew Nichols III ran for 186 yards on 30 carries and two touchdowns for Central Michigan. Pimpleton also added a 7-yard end around for a score to give Central Michigan a 20-19 lead.   Thomas Pannunzio returned a punt 70 yards for the game's only touchdown and Cayden Camper kicked five field goals as Colorado State surprised Toledo 22-6 on Saturday. Camper completed the scoring with three field goals in the fourth quarter.

Colorado State gained 209 yards rushing, with David Bailey accounting for 132 yards on 30 carries. Trey McBride caught nine passes for 109 yards, just one yard less than the Rams' total as starting quarterback Todd Centeio was a mere 11 of 27 for 110 yards. Toledo, which nearly upset Notre Dame a week prior, managed 291 yards on offense. Carter Bradley passed for 254 yards but the Rockets were held to 21 yards rushing.   The 2021 season unofficially kicked off on Tuesday with the Mid-American Conference Media Day at Ford Field, which in December will be the site of the league title game. The Chippewas went 3-3 in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, and they return a talented and solid core of veterans in the likes of defensive end Troy Hairston II and wide receiver/punt returner Kalil Pimpleton, both of whom represented CMU at Tuesday's media day. CMU won the MAC West in 2019, McElwain's first season at the helm of the program. "I think we've got great pieces on our team; I think our parts are fantastic," McElwain said. "I think we have some really, really talented guys. Now we've got to bring those parts and make it a whole."

Hairston, who was the co-MAC Defensive Player of the Year last season, is the headliner of a defense that includes mainstays Troy Brown - a two-time All-MAC First Team linebacker - safety Devonni Reed, and middle linebacker George Douglas. Pimpleton is among the most dazzling players in the MAC and is a threat to go the distance any time he touches the ball. He is part of an offense that includes the one-two running back punch of Kobe Lewis and Lew Nichols III, the latter of whom was named the MAC Freshman of the Year in 2020. The Chippewas were picked fourth in the preseason media poll. - Morning Sun

A college football quarterback who was shot and wounded last weekend "is showing all of the right signs of his body healing," the organizer of a GoFundMe page said Wednesday, praising him as a hero. Central Michigan's John Keller was the victim in a shooting at an off-campus party on Saturday. Lauren Rhodes, who organized the fundraiser, said Keller prevented the gunman from entering the building and potentially causing more casualties. "The Keller family and I would like to thank each and every one of you for your support during this difficult time. John still remains in critical condition, but he is stable. He is showing all of the right signs of his body healing. John continues to fight for his life and prayers are needed now more than ever," Rhodes wrote in an update on Keller's GoFundMe page.

"For those of you who do not know, the individual who shot John on April 24th, was taken into custody yesterday. When the assailant showed up at Deerfield Village Apartments early Saturday morning, John took heroic actions to prevent him from entering into the building to shoot other individuals. John is a hero and he deserves our support and prayers." Kenneth Thomas, of Detroit, was arrested in the shooting and pleaded not guilty to 10 charges in Isabella County Court, according to WXMI, the Fox-affiliated station in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Thomas was allegedly with a group of people who were going to the bars near Mount Pleasant. - Central Michigan Life

A search continues for the suspects in early-morning shootings Saturday that left two Central Michigan University students injured, one of them a backup quarterback on the Chippewa football team. Investigators are poring over tips, witness accounts, social media posts and a few videos from the scene of the shootings, which occurred just before 1 a.m. Saturday at Deerfield Village Apartments in Union Township, said Isabella County Sheriff Mike Main. Family members have identified the most seriously injured victim as John Keller, a transfer quarterback from Ohio on the CMU football team. Keller, 20, was shot once in the chest and initially listed in critical condition after being flown by medical helicopter to Hurley Medical Center in Flint. - Morning Sun

Reid went from secondary contributor to first team All-MAC as a sophomore, picking off passes in each of CMU's last three games. He played a much higher percentage of snaps in his second year of action, averaging 63.5 snaps per game. "Willie Reid had the opportunity to play a role as a starter for us and really developed," Akey said. Working with new secondary coach Mike Zordich will also help him. There's a bit of a log jam at the position, with senior Alonzo McCoy returning along with junior Devonni Reed. However, with Reid establishing himself as a turnover creator, it will be tough to keep him off the field if this trend continues. - Central Michigan Life

Along with announcing the start of spring football, McElwain added that CMU will be hosting its Pro Day the morning of March 23. The Chippewas are scheduled to practice that afternoon. Participants for Pro Day have not been announced. McElwain said that there will only be a few Chippewas participating as most of Pro Day-eligible players will be returning for a final season with an extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA. "As for a list of players, (Director of Player Personnel) Albert (Karschnia) puts that together," McElwain said. "Some of the scouts have asked, like usual, that there might be one or two of the guys from the (Division II) schools around that they want to get a look at. "There's not a lot of numbers going through it." - Central Michigan Life
