Central Michigan came to the desert southwest to play in one bowl game and ended up in another. The Chippewas still found a way to end their five-game bowl losing streak. Lew Nichols III ran for 130 yards and a touchdown, leading late replacement Central Michigan to a 24-21 victory over Washington State in the Sun Bowl on Friday. When Boise State opted out of the Arizona Bowl because of COVID-19 issues, Central Michigan switched about 300 miles east from Tucson, Arizona, to the Texas border city of El Paso. Miami skipped the Sun Bowl for COVID-19 reasons as well. Central Michigan stayed in Arizona before bussing to El Paso the day before the game. The Chippewas (9-4) won their fifth consecutive game this season in their first bowl victory since beating Western Kentucky in the 2012 Little Caesars Bowl. - Central Michigan/AP College Football

Daniel Richardson threw two touchdown passes to JaCorey Sullivan, Marion Lukes returned a second-half kickoff 100 yards and Central Michigan ended the season with a 31-10 defeat of rival Eastern Michigan on Saturday. The win gives the Chippewas (8-4, 6-1 Mid-American Conference) the Michigan MAC trophy awarded to the team with the best record against the other two MAC teams in the state. Lew Nichols carried 44 times and gained 194 yards with a 33-yard touchdown run for Central Michigan.

It was the seventh straight 100-yard rushing game for Nichols and moved him to second place on the Chippewas single-season rushing list with 1,710 yards. Lukes' kickoff return was the longest in program and stadium history and was the first kick return for a TD for CMU since 2017 and the first one at home since 2013. Central Michigan ended the regular season on a four-game win streak and await a bowl bid. Eastern Michigan (7-5, 4-4) scored its lone touchdown on a Samson Evans 2-yard run. Ben Bryant threw for 221 yards, completing 24 of 35 passes. He was sacked seven times. - Central Michigan/AP College Football

A new name appears at the top of the Football Bowl Subdivision rushing chart after Central Michigan's Lew Nichols III turned in his second straight 200-yard game and Michigan State's Kenneth Walker III had his least productive game of the season. Nichols' 1,516 yards and average of 137.8 per game lead the nation, just ahead of Walker in both categories. Walker has 1,498 yards and a 136.2-yard average. Nichols became the first Central Michigan player since 2014 to put together consecutive 200-yard games. He had a career-high 219 yards and three touchdowns on 32 carries in a 37-17 win over Ball State on Wednesday. He had 215 yards and four TDs in a 54-30 win over Kent State on Nov. 13.

The 5-foot-10, 220-pound Nichols was a three-star recruit out of Detroit in 2019 and was expected to split carries with Kobe Lewis this season. But Lewis was injured in preseason practice and is out for the season, leaving Nichols to carry the load for the Chippewas. Through five games Nichols ranked 53rd in country at 81 yards per game. His average has more than doubled, to 185.2, over his past six games. Walker was limited to six carries for 25 yards, both season lows, in Michigan State's 56-7 loss at Ohio State. Spartans coach Mel Tucker said Walker was banged up, and that's why his workload was limited. - AP College Football

Just before halftime, Drew Plitt led a 14-play, 81-yard drive for Ball State that ended with a 6-yard scoring pass to Yo'Heinz Tyler which reduced the Cardinals' deficit to 28-17. Midway through the third, however, Central Michigan (7-4, 5-2 Mid-American Conference) put it out of reach when Nichols carried it in from the 1 finishing an eight-play, 55-yard drive.   NOV 8 MAC WEST DIVISION SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Kalil Pimpleton, Central Michigan, Punt Returner, Junior, Muskegon, Mich./Muskegon,...Pimpleton led Central Michigan to a rivalry victory at Western Michigan with a pair of punt returns for touchdowns in just a five minute span on the game clock. Pimpleton's first punt return for a touchdown came at the 5:03 mark of the second quarter, a 70-yard score. It was CMU's first punt return for a TD since Antonio Brown in 2009. KP's second punt return for a score came with 00:03 left in the first half, a 97-yard return. That broke CMU's program record previously held by Jim Podoley, a 90-yard return vs. Northern Iowa, 1953. It was also the third-longest return in MAC history. Pimpleton is the first CMU player to have two punt returns for a touchdown in the program's Division I era. He is the only player at the FBS level this season to tally two in a game and is the 24th player in D-I to have multiple punt return touchdowns in a single game since 2000. Pimpleton broke the MAC single game punt return average record with a mark of 55.3. The previous mark was 43.3 by Ryne Robinson of Miami (Ohio) in 2003. - MAC Football

Kalil Pimpleton scored three touchdowns in five minutes, two on long punt returns, to spark Central Michigan to a 42-30 win over Western Michigan on Wednesday night. Pimpleton, who had 104 yards receiving with an 11-yard touchdown sandwiched between the punt returns, had 269 yards of total offense at halftime. He finished with 281. Lew Nichols had two second-half touchdown runs and piled up 163 yards on 26 carries for the Chippewas (5-4, 3-2 Mid-American Conference). It was his fourth straight 100-yard game and fifth of the season for the redshirt freshman.

With the Chippewas trailing 14-0 in the second quarter, Pimpleton took a punt and went around the right side 70 yards for a score. He then hauled in an 11-yard scoring pass to complete a three-play, 72-yard drive. The first TD came at the 5:03 mark, the third came three seconds before halftime. The last Chippewa to return a punt for a touchdown was Antonio Brown in 2009 when he was the last to have two punt returns in a season.
