*Lew Nichols III, Central Michigan, Player News

Lew Nichols III ran for 166 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns and Central Michigan dominated Bucknell in a 41-0 win on Saturday. The Chippewas (1-2) posted their last shutout almost a year to the date when they beat Robert Morris 45-0 at home on Sept. 11, 2021. Nichols has led Central Michigan in rushing in 10 of its last 11 games. Nichols scored twice in the second quarter on runs of 3 and 15 yards for a 20-0 Central Michigan advantage before halftime. The Chippewas got on the board when Daniel Richardson threw 10-yard touchdown to Joel Wilson to end a 12-play, 80-yard drive. Richardson threw for 198 yards and two touchdowns, and in a reserve role after Richardson's departure, Jase Bauer ran for two scores from 10 and 8 yards out. Ethan Grady threw for 96 yards for Bucknell (0-3). - Central Michigan/AP College Football

Ending last season as the nation's leading rusher, Lew Nichols III is the preeminent running back in the Central Michigan football backfield as the 2022 season approaches. As a redshirt freshman, Nichols finished 2021 with 1,848 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns on 341 carries, outpacing Michigan State's Kenneth Walker III and Iowa State's Breece Hall. Both Walker and Hall are currently in the NFL. "I wanted to follow up the season I had last year with this group of guys," Nichols said. "I mean, I didn't really put too much thought into that."

Instead, as the Chippewa offense looks to retool multiple positions, Nichols has stepped into a leadership role. Running Backs Coach Cornell Jackson said Nichols has gone about it in his way. "He's done a nice job helping the younger guys in the room," Jackson said. "He's done a nice job on the field motivating guys, but is he a rah-rah get-in-your-face type of player? No, he just turns up the volume with pads on. "I tell you what, he's having an unbelievable camp. Lew came in shape like he always does, keeping his chin down just a little bit, running hard. Good team leader." - Central Michigan Life

2022 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD CANDIDATE: Lew Nichols, III (So.), Central Michigan,...Making this watch list is significant because despite leading the nation in rushing, running back Lew Nichols (5-10. 220) was not selected as a semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award last season. As a redshirt freshman during the COVID 19-shortened 2020 season, Nichols rushed for 196 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns in a 31-23 victory over rival Eastern Michigan. For the season, he rushed for 508 yards on 78 carries, an average of 6.5 yards per carry. He won the MAC freshman of the year award. Due to special eligibility rules enacted for the 2020 season, Nichols repeated as a redshirt freshman in 2021.   Central Michigan came to the desert southwest to play in one bowl game and ended up in another. The Chippewas still found a way to end their five-game bowl losing streak. Lew Nichols III ran for 130 yards and a touchdown, leading late replacement Central Michigan to a 24-21 victory over Washington State in the Sun Bowl on Friday. When Boise State opted out of the Arizona Bowl because of COVID-19 issues, Central Michigan switched about 300 miles east from Tucson, Arizona, to the Texas border city of El Paso. Miami skipped the Sun Bowl for COVID-19 reasons as well. Central Michigan stayed in Arizona before bussing to El Paso the day before the game. The Chippewas (9-4) won their fifth consecutive game this season in their first bowl victory since beating Western Kentucky in the 2012 Little Caesars Bowl. - Central Michigan/AP College Football

Daniel Richardson threw two touchdown passes to JaCorey Sullivan, Marion Lukes returned a second-half kickoff 100 yards and Central Michigan ended the season with a 31-10 defeat of rival Eastern Michigan on Saturday. The win gives the Chippewas (8-4, 6-1 Mid-American Conference) the Michigan MAC trophy awarded to the team with the best record against the other two MAC teams in the state. Lew Nichols carried 44 times and gained 194 yards with a 33-yard touchdown run for Central Michigan.

It was the seventh straight 100-yard rushing game for Nichols and moved him to second place on the Chippewas single-season rushing list with 1,710 yards.   A new name appears at the top of the Football Bowl Subdivision rushing chart after Central Michigan's Lew Nichols III turned in his second straight 200-yard game and Michigan State's Kenneth Walker III had his least productive game of the season. Nichols' 1,516 yards and average of 137.8 per game lead the nation, just ahead of Walker in both categories. Walker has 1,498 yards and a 136.2-yard average. Nichols became the first Central Michigan player since 2014 to put together consecutive 200-yard games. He had a career-high 219 yards and three touchdowns on 32 carries in a 37-17 win over Ball State on Wednesday. He had 215 yards and four TDs in a 54-30 win over Kent State on Nov. 13.

The 5-foot-10, 220-pound Nichols was a three-star recruit out of Detroit in 2019 and was expected to split carries with Kobe Lewis this season. But Lewis was injured in preseason practice and is out for the season, leaving Nichols to carry the load for the Chippewas. Through five games Nichols ranked 53rd in country at 81 yards per game. His average has more than doubled, to 185.2, over his past six games. Walker was limited to six carries for 25 yards, both season lows, in Michigan State's 56-7 loss at Ohio State. Spartans coach Mel Tucker said Walker was banged up, and that's why his workload was limited. - AP College Football
