  Joey Labas threw for three touchdowns and 342 yards and completed 75% of his passes and Central Michigan beat Central Connecticut 66-10 on Thursday night in the season opener for both teams. Labas finished 18-for-24 passing overall and did most of his damage before halftime, completing 16 of 20 for 268 yards and two touchdowns and sending the Chippewas to a 42-7 halftime advantage. Myles Bailey opened the scoring by running in from 7 yards out for a 7-0 Central Michigan lead. Elijah Howard knotted it with a 3-yard run, but on the following kickoff, Stephan Bracey ran 87 yards to score and Central Michigan pulled away.

A four touchdown second quarter saw B.J. Harris run it in from the 9, Labas threw scores of 47 and 17 yards to Evan Boyd and Solomon Davis respectively and Bailey ran it in from the 2 with 37 seconds left before halftime. Wrapped around Labas' 72-yard scoring pass to Davis in the third, Donte Kent returned a punt for a 66-yard score and Aakeem Snell had a 46-yard interception return with 1:48 left in the third.   2023 ALL-MISSOURI VALLEY FOOTBALL SECOND TEAM: DB Maddix Blackwell, Indiana State, R-So.,...Blackwell made major strides in his first full season starting at safety for the Sycamores. The Bloomington, Ind. native became the first Indiana State player to post 100-plus tackles in a single season since Jonas Griffith (2019) on his way to posting 107 stops on the year. He led the Valley in tackles per game (9.73) and recorded seven games with double-digit stops including a season-high 15 against Youngstown State, while adding 13 at North Dakota and 12 in the season finale against Southern Illinois.

He was adept in the turnover game playing a part in five fumbles and two interceptions on the year. Blackwell scored ISU's first points of the 2023 season with a 75-yard fumble return for a touchdown against Indiana and added a 15-yard fumble scoop-and-score against Southern Illinois in the season finale. He added a third fumble recovery against Ball State to finish second in the MVFC with three recoveries.   Put your hat in the ring, your name in the sweepstake. On Thursday evening former Central Michigan standout wide out Dallas Dixon declared for the 2023 NFL Draft in Kansas City on April 27-29. Dixon is the sixth Chippewa to declare for the draft and joins running back Lew Nichols III, wide out Carlos Carriere, defensive lineman Thomas Incoom, tight end Joel Wilson and cornerback Ronald Kent Jr.

Dixon had a big 2021 season, yet was sidelined for the 2022 season in just the second game with a shoulder injury. In 2021 the third-team All-MAC selection caught 45 passes for 701 yards and eight touchdowns. He caught at least one pass in all 13 games in 2021. He is currently training in Marquette in the Upper Peninsula to get ready for CMU's 'Pro Day' in early March. - Morning Sun

  When it comes to quarterbacks, the transfer portal giveth and the transfer portal taketh away. The Iowa football team gained two quarterbacks from the portal and lost two quarterbacks to the portal. The turnover, along with Spencer Petras' shoulder injury, means Iowa's quarterback room will look significantly different in 2023. Gone: Alex Padilla and Carson May were Iowa's two departures via the transfer portal at quarterback. Padilla appeared in 13 games in an Iowa uniform since 2020 and completed 49 percent of his passes while throwing three touchdowns and four interceptions. May, a true freshman, did not see any game action in his lone season in Iowa City.

Who is back: Joe Labas is expected to return for his sophomore year after making his collegiate debut in the 2022 Music City Bowl. Labas went 14-for-24 with one touchdown and no interceptions despite practicing almost exclusively on the scout team until bowl prep began. Spencer Petras is staying with the Hawkeyes at least through the spring as he rehabs his shoulder. He tore his rotator cuff and labrum in his throwing shoulder in Iowa's Nov. 25 loss to Nebraska. - The Gazette

  Central Michigan football senior offensive lineman Jamezz Kimbrough has elected to forgo his remaining eligibility and declare for the 2023 NFL Draft. He announced his decision via social media on Thursday. As the center of the offensive line, this year he earned Second Team Mid-American Conference honors this season. He served as a team captain in 10 games this season. Kimbrough joined Central Michigan's program in 2017 out of Homewood, Illinois, and redshirted his freshman year. Since then, he has accumulated 31 starts over his six seasons, including all games in each of the 2018, 2020, 2021 and 2022 seasons. He did not see action in 2019. - Central Michigan Life

  2022 ALL-MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM: Down Lineman - Thomas Incoom, Central Michigan,...A Stone Mountain, Ga. native who is on the Watch List for the Ted Hendricks Award honoring the nation's top defensive end, Incoom concluded the year ranked No. 4 in the nation and No. 2 in the MAC in sacks (11.5, 0.96 per game) and No. 7 in in the nation and No. 2 in the MAC in tackles for loss (19.0, 1.6 per game). He also ranks No. 22 nationally in fumble recoveries. Incoom ranked No. 4 on the squad in tackles with 57 (31 solo), recovered two fumbles, forced a fumble, and registered a team-high four quarterback hurries. In his two-year career, 25-game career at Central Michigan, Incoom has amassed 84 tackles (47 solo), 27.0 tackles for loss for 140 yards, 15.5 sacks for 116 yards, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries. Before missing the season's final three games due to injury, Wilson led the Chippewas in both touchdown receptions (six) and yards receiving per game (49.4) and ranked second on the team in scoring (38 points), receptions (44), and receiving yards (445). After nine games, Wilson ranked second nationally among tight ends in receptions and receiving yards and he led the Chippewas in receiving in three games. During his four-year, 34-game career, Wilson has 82 receptions for 874 yards and 12 touchdowns with a 25.7 average per game. Wilson is a Mechanical Engineering major. - Central Michigan Football

  After leading Central Michigan football with six touchdown catches, junior tight end Joel Wilson has entered his name into the 2023 NFL Draft. Wilson made the announcement on Wednesday via Instagram. Due to a season ending injury against Northern Illinois, Wilson played in nine games during the 2022 season. In that time, he recorded career-highs in receptions (44) and receiving yards (445). In 2018, the Petoskey native came to CMU and transitioned from quarterback to tight end, recording one catch in four games. Wilson saw time in three games during 2019 and his first start in the New Mexico Bowl against San Diego St. Although Wilson improved his numbers in 2020, he didn't breakout until the 2021 season. After becoming the full-time starter, he finished with 31 catches for 367 yards and six touchdowns. - Central Michigan Life

  OCT 24 MISSOURI VALLEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEE: DB Maddix Blackwell, Indiana State - Blackwell posted his first collegiate interception with a nifty one-handed grab down the right sideline and added five solo tackles and a key tackle for loss in the Sycamores' Homecoming game against Illinois State. The nickelback trailed the Illinois State tight end down the field and went up with one hand to tip the ball to himself and returned it 11 yards to set up Indiana State's first scoring drive of the day. Four of his tackles came in the first half, while his final one came late in the fourth quarter with his stop behind the line of scrimmage forcing a Redbirds three-and-out. - Missouri Valley Football

  Thomas Incoom scooped up a loose ball and went 63 yards unimpeded to score the winning touchdown with 1:50 to play, lifting Central Michigan to a shocking 28-21 win over Akron on Saturday. The Zips had tied the score with a quick 78-yard drive, and after forcing a three-and-out were driving to the potential win when quarterback DJ Irons and running back Clyde Price III had a miscommunication on an option sweep to the left. When it hit the turf, Incoom was the only one close and had no trouble racing down the left sideline to the end zone.

On the final possession, the Central Michigan (2-5, 1-2 Mid-American Conference) defense had two of their eight sacks and Akron (1-6, 0-3) had an incompletion on fourth-and-25 to lose its sixth-straight game. After Irons raced 53 yards for a touchdown on the third play of the game, Central Michigan scored three straight touchdowns. Daniel Richardson connected with Marion Lukes for a 37-yard score and Lukes also had touchdown runs of 1 and 9 yards, the long one on a fake field goal. Lukes rushed 26 times for 160 yards and had four receptions for 71. Richardson was 13 of 21 for 138.   Lew Nichols III ran for 166 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns and Central Michigan dominated Bucknell in a 41-0 win on Saturday. The Chippewas (1-2) posted their last shutout almost a year to the date when they beat Robert Morris 45-0 at home on Sept. 11, 2021. Nichols has led Central Michigan in rushing in 10 of its last 11 games. Nichols scored twice in the second quarter on runs of 3 and 15 yards for a 20-0 Central Michigan advantage before halftime. The Chippewas got on the board when Daniel Richardson threw 10-yard touchdown to Joel Wilson to end a 12-play, 80-yard drive. Richardson threw for 198 yards and two touchdowns, and in a reserve role after Richardson's departure, Jase Bauer ran for two scores from 10 and 8 yards out.
