Dillon Gabriel threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score as UCF beat East Carolina 41-28 on Saturday night. Gabriel had a career-high 365 yards passing for the Knights (5-2, 2-1 American Athletic Conference) who scored 35 points in the first half. Gabriel Davis caught two touchdown passes and had 164 yards receiving. Otis Anderson ran for 80 yards on 18 carries. The Knights scored three touchdowns in the first quarter beginning with Gabriel's keeper to cap a 92-yard drive.

Greg McCrae took it in from the 4 after that and Bentavious Thompson streaked 32 yards to close the quarter with a 21-0 lead. Backup QB Darriel Mack Jr. threw a 33-yard touchdown to Davis early in the second quarter and Gabriel returned on the next drive to hit Davis again from 16 yards for a 35-3 advantage with 1:09 left in the half. The Knights allowed 17-unanswered ECU points in the third quarter before Gabriel found Tre Nixon for a 53-yard score to lead 41-22. Holton Ahlers had 313 yards and a touchdown passing and ran for another score for the Pirates (3-4, 0-3). - Central Florida/AP College Football

Dillon spread the ball around against Stanford, with his four touchdowns going to four different players. Yet it's Davis that is quickly becoming UCF's best deep threat. He is averaging 22.9 yards per reception, a significant boost from 2018 when he averaged 15.9 yards and scored seven touchdowns. Davis has three scores already but will be tested against an aggressive Pitt secondary that might be among the best in the Atlantic Coast Conference. - AP College Football

Brandon Wimbush was impressive. Dillon Gabriel may have been just as good. Together the redshirt senior transfer, true freshman and even third-stringer Quadry Jones could make UCF's quarterback situation interesting this fall after combining to throw for 356 yards and six touchdowns in a 62-0, season-opening rout of Florida A&M on Thursday night. "I thought all of them did a ton of positive things," coach Josh Heupel said. "It doesn't matter who's in there," running back Adrian Killins offered. "They're all capable of leading this team where we want to go." Wimbush, the former Notre Dame star who won the starting job this summer, threw for 168 yards and two touchdowns.

Gabriel sparkled, too, after finishing second in the competition for the position that opened because of an injury sidelining two-time American Athletic Conference offensive player of the year McKenzie Milton. "It felt great," Wimbush said after the two-time defending AAC champions amassed 694 yards total offense and won for the 26th time in 27 games. "We have to keep building...keep getting better," Wimbush added. "I think that's important for a young and developing team." Wimbush, who tossed TD passes of 37 and 12 yards to Gabriel Davis, was 13-2 as a starter over the past two years at Notre Dame. He lost his job there to Ian Book despite helping the Fighting Irish begin last season with three consecutive wins. - AP College Football

Brandon Wimbush is excited to have another chance to play. The former Notre Dame quarterback believes he's a good fit for UCF's prolific offense, and the senior transfer will make his debut with the 17th-ranked Knights against Florida A&M on Thursday night. Wimbush beat out true freshman Dillon Gabriel for the job that opened because of injuries to McKenzie Milton and the two-time American Athletic Conference offensive player of the year's backup, Darriel Mack Jr.

The 22-year-old Wimbush, 13-2 as a starter at Notre Dame before being benched last season with the Fighting Irish sporting a 3-0 record, certainly is not a stranger to a big-time college football atmosphere. Still, he noted it'll be different trotting onto the field with a new team. "I'm going to be nervous. I hope everyone's nervous," Wimbush said, adding he views that as a sign of being excited and ready to play, rather than a negative. "This being my fifth year...it's not pressure for me anymore," he added. "I understand this is a privilege, and I'm just excited and happy to be able to do it again." - AP College Football
