Malcolm Koonce will head to the NFL, and he'll do so as the first University at Buffalo football player drafted in four years. The Las Vegas Raiders selected the Bulls' defensive end with pick No. 79 in the third round Friday in Cleveland. UB's recent success on the field and in player development has helped cultivate more professional prospects. The selection capped a remarkable 2020 season and postseason for Koonce, who skyrocketed up mock drafts this spring. That was despite not working out during UB's pro day in March due to a broken metatarsal in his foot. "I was being myself throughout the whole process," Koonce told reporters via the Mercury News. "I'd heard anywhere from second round all the way to seventh. I really didn't even know." - Buffalo News

Marks is in position to be UB's top running back, after Patterson's departure. He is also in a spot to reaffirm his place on UB's roster. It appeared Marks would pursue a transfer to a Power Five program in January, but he withdrew his name from the NCAA's transfer portal nine days later. Marks ran for 741 yards and seven touchdowns in seven games in 2020, and is seventh in career rushing yards for UB (2,621 yards). He leads a group of running backs that includes Dylan McDuffie, Ron Cook Jr. and Kolbe Burrell. The running backs, however, have little experience behind Marks, so Marks' return will be key in UB's offense, which has thrived on the run in the last two seasons. UB was second in the nation in rushing last season at 287.4 yards per game. - Buffalo News

Riggins was primed to improve as a potential NFL prospect, but missed last season with an undisclosed injury. He'll return in 2021 to augment a defensive line that registered 20 sacks last season and returns defensive tackles Eddie Wilson and George Wolo. Riggins was a 2019 All-MAC defensive end who had 50 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, seven quarterback hurries, three fumble recoveries and one forced fumble. - Buffalo News

  03/14/21 - Adam BeckSr/2022, Buffalo + More +

Texas Tech defensive back Adam Beck announced Friday he plans to graduate this summer and transfer with two years of eligibility remaining. Beck, 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, played both safety and linebacker for the Red Raiders the past two years after arriving as a transfer from Minnesota. In 20 games with Tech, he was credited with 61 tackles, 6 1/2 tackles for loss and 1 1/2 sacks. He also had two pass breakups and a caused fumble. The Richmond George Ranch graduate was a junior in 2020, but like all players, does not lose that season of eligibility because of the NCAA's giving players a free year during the COVID-19 pandemic disruptions. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

Marks, a 6-foot, 205-pound native of Norfolk, Va., ran for 741 yards and seven touchdowns on 112 carries, and is seventh all-time in rushing for UB (2,621 yards) and fifth all-time in rushing touchdowns (28).   Kevin Marks looked like a super sub early, stalled against a stingy defense and then delivered the decisive blow. Marks scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 1:09 left after a clock-eating drive and Buffalo made a final defensive stop to beat Marshall 17-10 in the Camellia Bowl on Friday. Subbing for the national leader in rushing yards per game, Jaret Patterson, Marks carried 35 time for 138 yards for the Bulls (6-1) against one of the nation's top run defenses. Buffalo milked more than six minutes off the clock on the final 13-play, 88-yard drive. Quarterback Kyle Vantrease took a knee on first down and coach Lance Leipold even considered calling for a second one for a team that had only made its first field goal of the season in the first half. - AP College Football

Buffalo's Jaret Patterson is expected to play against Marshall in the Camellia Bowl on Friday, a week after one of the nation's leading rushers hurt his right knee. Coach Lance Leipold said Patterson should be "ready and able to go" after the junior worked out individually on the sideline during practice Tuesday. Leipold said it remains to be determined whether Patterson would wear a protective brace on the knee he hurt in the third quarter of a 38-28 loss to Ball State in the Mid-American Conference championship last Friday.

The coach wouldn't rule out the possibility of Patterson seeing limited playing time. "I guess go is go. Would I see a little more rotation? Possibly," Leipold said. Patterson was hurt while being tackled for a loss and returned briefly in the fourth quarter while wearing a brace. He finished with a season-low 47 yards on 18 carries but scored his 19th touchdown rushing to match the school single-season record he set last year. Overall, Patterson leads the nation by averaging 178.7 yards rushing per outing, and he ranks 10th with 1,072 yards despite Buffalo (5-1) playing just six games this season. - AP College Football

Ball State won the MAC championship by limiting Buffalo's Jaret Patterson to 47 yards on 18 carries. Even after that pedestrian performance, Patterson still owns the FBS rushing lead by over 16 yards per game. Patterson has run for 1,072 yards and averages 178.67 yards per game. Colorado's Jarek Broussard ranks second with 162.6 yards rushing per game. - AP College Football

Buffalo star Jaret Patterson left the Mid-American Conference championship game in the third quarter with what appeared to be a right leg issue. Patterson was able to leave the field under his own power, but he did not play the rest of that series and remained sidelined for the start of Buffalo's next possession as well. The 23rd-ranked Bulls trailed Ball State 38-21 when Patterson exited, and the Cardinals had held him to just 45 yards on 17 carries. It has been a dazzling season for Patterson, who rushed for 1,025 yards and 18 touchdowns in Buffalo's first five games. He opened the scoring with a TD run Friday night as well, but Ball State has kept him mostly contained. - AP College Football
