Two Arizona receivers have put their names in the NCAA transfer portal. BJ Casteel and Boobie Curry became the latest Wildcats to enter the portal. Casteel started 17 games for Arizona, all over the past three seasons. He caught 90 passes for 880 yards and four touchdowns during his UA career. Casteel had 33 grabs for 326 yards and one score this past season but lost playing time late in the year as Fisch turned to younger players. Curry was a four-star recruit in the class of 2019 out of Houston. He came to the UA with Grant Gunnell, his high school quarterback. Gunnell transferred to Memphis last offseason. Arizona will have a different-looking receiving corps next year with Casteel and Curry likely transferring and Stanley Berryhill III entering the NFL draft. - Arizona Star News

Alex McNulty kicked a 27-yard field goal, his second attempt after time expired, and Buffalo rallied with 17 points in the fourth quarter to defeat Ohio 27-26 on Saturday. McNulty missed a 32-yard field goal as time expired but an Ohio defender was offside. The kick capped a 16-play, 86-yard drive that started at Buffalo's five-yard line with 6:19 to play. Kyle Vantrease threw a pair of touchdown passes in the fourth quarter for the Bulls (3-4, 1-2 Mid-American Conference). He had a 2-yarder to Tyler Stephens to cap an 80-yard drive and an 8-yarder to Trevor Borland to end a 35-yard drive with 8:39 to play. Quarterback Armani Rogers kept the ball 22 times and gained 183 yards, including a 99-yard burst for the middle score in the first quarter for the Bobcats (1-6, 1-2). The touchdown was the longest by a quarterback in NCAA history - beating by one yard that Arizona State's Mark Malone had against Utah State in 1979. Vantrease was 22 of 30 for 261 yards and Dylan McDuffie had 143 yards on 23 carries with a touchdown. The Bulls trailed 21-0 after the first quarter and 26-10 entering the fourth. - Buffalo/AP College Football

The Florida football program welcomed two late additions to the roster Friday, with graduate transfer Elijah Blades and 2021 signee Tyreak Sapp reporting to campus for preseason training camp. Blades graduated from Texas A&M on Thursday and has officially enrolled at UF, while Sapp also joined the team after his high school transcript was approved by the NCAA Clearinghouse. The addition of the 6-foot-2, 185-pound Blades could help the Gators fill the void left by junior cornerback Jaydon Hill, a projected starter who tore his ACL last Sunday and will miss the season.

Blades, a former Florida commit in high school, was ranked the No. 4 JUCO player in 2019. He made six starts that fall for the Aggies and missed four games due to injury, finishing the season with 19 tackles, 1.5 sacks and three pass breakups before opting out last year. Blades will compete with fellow transfer Jadarrius Perkins and cornerbacks Avery Helm, Ethan Pouncey and Jason Marshall Jr., a five-star freshman, for the starting job opposite Kaiir Elam. Blades could also potentially line up at the STAR position, where the Gators lost starter Brad Stewart. - Gainesville Sun

Kevin Marks Jr. isn't ready to go into why he chose to enter the transfer portal in January, or why he chose to withdraw and return to the University at Buffalo football program. "This was the best choice for me," Marks said. "But I'll talk about it more later down the road." What Marks, a running back with the Bulls, is ready to discuss - and can't discuss enough of - is how he has prepared for this season, and what he is learning under the tutelage of new running backs coach Mike Daniels. Marks is getting detail-oriented training as he continues to elevate his game. He's learning things that can help him be a successful running back. "Coach Daniels, he's teaching us a lot of things, from the front-to-front, what are we reading, the coaching points, what we see when we step to the line of scrimmage, the situation, the steps, the reads, the play calls, the down and distance," said Marks, a redshirt senior who ran for 741 yards and seven touchdowns on 112 carries in seven games for UB last season. "It's preparing in that way, the little things that make us a better player, so every play can be a good play, and we can make the right decision, in those moments in the course of a game."

Even as much of the country, including Western New York, continues to work through abnormal times due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Bulls returned to a routine and often spirited practice setting. It's another element in how Marks, who is UB's top returning running back, continues to evolve his game. He is currently seventh all-time in rushing for UB (2,621 yards) and sixth all-time in rushing touchdowns (28). UB is less than a week into its practices, but Marks' drive is already evident to first-year Bulls coach Maurice Linguist. "He is running the ball like he's trying to prove a point," Linguist said Monday during UB's football media day at Murchie Family Fieldhouse. "He's running the ball with a lot of conviction and confidence." - Buffalo News

The competition to replace Jaret Patterson has started, and while it's going to be difficult to fully replace one of the program's most prolific rushers, UB has a stable of options, starting with Kevin Marks. Marks has amassed 2,621 yards and 28 touchdowns in three seasons. He enters this season ranked seventh all-time in rushing yards and sixth in rushing touchdowns for the Bulls. This is his chance to become the bell cow back.

While there's depth behind Marks at running back, there isn't much experience. Ron Cook Jr. and Dylan McDuffie have combined for 401 yards and one touchdown on 76 carries in the last three seasons, and Tajay Ahmed, Kolbe Burrell and Caron Robinson have received minimal playing time. The Bulls also have several true freshman backs, including Al-Jay Henderson, Mike Washington and Jailen Nias. - Buffalo News

This is the season when Patterson truly has the opportunity to make a name for himself. Not that he hasn't done that, as he's helped the Bulls become one of the MAC's consistent winning programs. The senior from Glenn Dale, Md., is a two-year captain for UB, and was the team's leading tackler last season, when he was named a first-team All-Mid-American Conference selection at inside linebacker. He has been added to the Butkus Award watch list for best linebacker in college football, and the Bednarik Award watch list for the best defensive player in college football.

This is the year, though, where he will reiterate that he is more than just Jaret Patterson's twin brother. "I'll do it through my play, and through my leadership, and nothing else," Patterson said July 20 at the MAC Media Day at Ford Field. "Nothing new. Keep it plain and simple. I'm still the same guy who doesn't really like all the shine and the glory, I'm still the guy who likes to do the dirty work and stay under the scenes. That's me. That's always going to be me, and I'm never going to change from that." In his own way, Patterson thrived as he worked in the shadows of his brother's limelight. As Jaret Patterson ran for 1,072 yards and 19 touchdowns in six games last year, James was an integral part of a defense that allowed a conference-low 360.4 yards per game. He had 63 tackles, two pass breakups, an interception and a forced fumble last season. - Buffalo News

Kevin Marks, a running back on the University at Buffalo football team, announced Friday that he will partner with Playmaker Talent for future individual marketing involving name, image and likeness. "NIL is here. College athletes across the country are finally able to be fairly compensated through their endorsements," Marks posted Friday on his Instagram account. "I am proud to announce that I have partnered with @playmaker and @playmakertalent for this seasons marketing opportunities. I'm looking forward to building my brand while maintaining excellence on the field and in the classroom."

Marks is UB's top returning running back, and among the first UB athletes to publicly announce his alignment with a branding company for name, image and likeness (NIL) purposes. He has not yet announced if he has any business deals, and the NCAA requires a seven-day grace period for college athletes to file agreements or proposals with a third party with a school's compliance office. Over the weekend, at least two more UB athletes announced partnerships with a branding company. Hannah Sullivan, who runs track and field, and Kaitlyn Walsh, who plays soccer, have partnered with Barstool Athletics. Barstool Athletics is an arm of Barstool Sports, and helps college athletes amplify their brands. - Buffalo News

Quian Williams, a wide receiver who played last season at Eastern Michigan, announced Thursday night on social media that he will transfer to the University at Buffalo. Williams was Eastern Michigan's No. 3 receiver in 2020, catching 24 passes for 322 yards and two touchdowns in six games. In 2019, Williams was Eastern Michigan's second-leading receiver with 661 yards and six touchdowns in 13 games. Williams is a 6-foot receiver from Oklahoma City who will likely help fill a void at the position. UB lost three of its top four receivers from 2020 either to graduation or to transfers, including leading receiver Antonio Nunn (584 yards, two touchdowns) and Trevor Wilson (319 yards, three touchdowns). - Buffalo News

  05/11/21 - Matt MyersrSr/2024, Buffalo + More +

University at Buffalo quarterback Matt Myers has withdrawn from the transfer portal. Rivals.com reported Tuesday morning that Myers, a redshirt sophomore who played at West Seneca West and Bishop Timon-St. Jude, will return to the Bulls for a fourth season. Myers initially entered the transfer portal on Thursday, a day before UB announced that Maurice Linguist will be the program's new head coach. In five games in 2019, Myers threw for 602 yards and six touchdowns on 49 of 105 passing, and was intercepted four times. He also ran for 94 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries that season, but sustained a season-ending upper-body injury Sept. 28 in a 34-20 loss at Miami (Ohio). Myers was the backup to Kyle Vantrease in 2020, and completed two passes in three games for 11 yards. - Buffalo News

Two more players from the University at Buffalo football program have entered the transfer portal, including former West Seneca West and Bishop Timon-St. Jude quarterback Matt Myers. Jacob Gall, an offensive lineman for the Bulls, has also entered the transfer portal, according to 247Sports. Multiple sources told The News that UB could announce a new coach within the next two to four days. The new coach would replace Lance Leipold, who resigned on April 30, after six seasons as head coach of the Bulls to take the same job at Kansas. UB has not commented on potential personnel changes and has not confirmed which players have entered the transfer portal. Six players from UB's 2020 roster have entered the transfer portal in the last week, after Leipold's departure and the impending departure of several of Leipold's assistants. - Buffalo News

Jaret Patterson now heads to the NFL. While the University at Buffalo running back wasn't selected in the NFL Draft, it wasn't long before he still found an opportunity. Patterson told the News in a text message that he will join the Washington Football team as an undrafted free agent. He's one of three Bulls who signed or will sign as free agents with teams on Saturday. Kayode Awosika, an offensive lineman, posted on his Twitter account that he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, and UB announced that wide receiver Antonio Nunn signed with the Atlanta Falcons. "Lol this only more motivation!!" he wrote. "More fuel to the fire!! This ain't nothing new to me!! I know god is doing this for a reason!!" However, a few hours later, he posted a photo of himself as a child, standing behind a mannequin that wore a burgundy, yellow and white Washington jersey. Patterson emerged in the last two seasons at UB as one of the nation's most productive running backs. - Buffalo News
