South Carolina freshman defensive tackle Jamaal Whyce is back with the Gamecocks, head coach Shane Beamer confirmed Tuesday ahead of his appearance at SEC Media Days. Whyce had previously been away from the program for undisclosed reasons along with receiver Rico Powers - who has since transferred to Jackson State. "He's been back for the summer," Beamer said of Whyce. Beamer acknowledged that Whyce and Powers were not with the team following South Carolina's spring game in April. Whyce came to USC as a three-star recruit in the 2022 class out of Florida Christian School in Miami.   07/17/22 - Dillon DoylerSr/2023, Baylor, 6-3, 238 (DS#19 ILB) + More +

Baylor's Dillon Doyle may not be the second coming of Kordell Stewart, but he slashed between two sides of the football rather nicely in 2021. Not only did the linebacker rank second on the Bears with 91 tackles, but he also made several key plays on offense as a part-time fullback. He even scored a pair of touchdowns in a win over BYU. So, could Doyle's success as a two-way threat lead to Baylor experimenting with more guys going both ways in 2022, at least in certain situations? They're not about to rule it out. "We have a history of that, right? (Running back) Abram Smith was a linebacker, I played a little bit of offense last year," Doyle said. "But I think those questions will be answered as needs arise. But it's not out of the question."

Baylor coach Dave Aranda said that he envisions that Doyle will continue to have a role offensively in his senior season, even while maintaining his myriad defensive responsibilities. As for whether Doyle will have buddies in that regard, it remains to be seen, Aranda said. "There wasn't a bunch of that in the spring. I think there'll be more of that in the fall, with our complete team," Aranda said. "We've got a few guys among the young guys who could play in various spots (both ways). So we'll be excited to see that develop." - Waco Tribune Herald

  07/08/22 - Connor GalvinrSr/2023, Baylor, 6-7, 299 (DS#16 OT) + More +

Coming off its 2021 championship season, Baylor is well represented on the 2022 preseason all-Big 12 football team with five selections. Linebacker Dillon Doyle, offensive linemen Jacob Gall and Connor Galvin, defensive lineman Siaki Ika and tight end Ben Sims represent the Bears on the squad that was selected by the media that covers the league. Baylor's five selections are the second-most on the team behind Kansas State's six. Galvin, a fifth-year senior, was named the Big 12's offensive lineman of the year in 2021 after starting all 14 games at left tackle. He collected All-America honors from the Associated Press after anchoring a Baylor offensive line that allowed just 18 sacks last year. - Waco Tribune Herald

  06/03/22 - Luke AnthonyrSr/2024, Baylor, 6-1, 208 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Baylor has added former Louisiana Tech quarterback Luke Anthony as a walk-on to the 2022 roster, giving the Bears some veteran depth following the transfer of senior Gerry Bohanon to USF. Anthony didn't play in 2021 after suffering a leg injury late in the 2020 season. He was named Conference USA newcomer of the year as a Louisiana Tech graduate transfer in 2020 as he passed for 1,479 yards and 16 touchdowns with five interceptions in nine games.

Anthony previously played at Abilene Christian from 2016-19 where he was a two-year starter following his prep career at Fort Worth All Saints Episcopal School. After redshirting at ACU in 2016, Anthony threw for 776 yards and 11 touchdowns in seven games in 2017. He became the Wildcats' full-time starter in 2018 and threw for 3,019 yards and 23 scores, including a 231-yard passing performance with two touchdowns in a 55-27 season-opening loss to Baylor. - Waco Tribune Herald

Poised for a 2022 standout season: Redshirt sophomore Lorando Johnson, a former four-star recruit known as "Snaxx," is expected to take over the hybrid linebacker-defensive back spot in the Bears defense. Jalen Pitre was the Big 12 defensive player of the year in that role last season.   04/28/22 - Kamren WashingtonrJr/2027, Baylor, 6-2, 290 (DS#999 DT) + More +

Memphis added more help on the defensive line as former Sam Houston State lineman Kamren Washington committed to the Tigers. Washington was the WAC Freshman of the Year last season after recording 13 tackles with a sack in 10 games. The 6-foot-2, 265 pound native from Mansfield, Texas entered the transfer portal on April 12 according to his Twitter feed. Washington took a visit to Memphis during the spring game Friday and also had offers from Charlotte, Texas State, Louisiana Tech and North Texas among others. "Soon as I got there, it was just a click with (defensive line) Coach (Kyle) Pope and (head coach Ryan) Silverfield," Washington told The Commercial Appeal. "They have a good team and I think I can come make an impact in the system and help them win a championship." He also said the spring game environment factored into his decision along with loving the culture at Memphis. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

  04/26/22 - Dillon DoylerSr/2023, Baylor, 6-3, 238 (DS#19 ILB) + More +

Terrel Bernard wasn't just a three-time all-Big 12 linebacker, he was a tremendous leader with an exemplary work ethic that made his Baylor teammates want to follow. Talk about going out with a bang: In Baylor's 21-7 Sugar Bowl win over Ole Miss, Bernard amassed a career-high 20 tackles and two sacks in his final game as a senior. Those are Mike Singletary numbers.

With Bernard gone, fifth-year senior Dillon Doyle is the obvious next man up to take over the leadership role for Baylor's linebackers. "It's a pleasure, it's great to just have that guy around," said Baylor defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach Ron Roberts. "Not just what he provides as a good player, but what he provides from a leadership standpoint and how to do things. He's first-class in everything. I can't say enough about him, and you guys know that." After transferring from Iowa, Doyle has started for Baylor for the past two seasons. He's coming off a tremendous junior year as he ranked second behind Bernard with 89 tackles with nine for loss along with an interception and a forced fumble. Nicknamed Diesel, Doyle even stepped in at fullback occasionally on the goal line as he ran for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass. He's more than ready to take over leadership roles that Bernard and All-America safety Jalen Pitre carried last season for Baylor's defense. - Waco Tribune Herald

  01/01/22 - Terrel BernardrSr/2022, Baylor, 6-1, 218 (DS#14 OLB) + More +

A Sugar Bowl showdown against Mississippi and coach Lane Kiffin's explosive, Southeastern Conference-leading offense provided a high-profile platform for Baylor to validate its old-school formula of ball control and aggressive defense. Al Walcott set a Sugar Bowl record with a 96-yard interception return, Monaray Baldwin raced 48 yards for the go-ahead score on an end around, and sixth-ranked Baylor beat No. 8 Mississippi 21-7 Saturday night as injured Rebels quarterback Matt Corral watched from the sideline on crutches.

Abram Smith rushed for 172 yards to finish with a single-season record 1,601 for Big 12 champion Baylor (12-2), which won 12 games in a season for the first time. The defense did the rest, finishing with 10 sacks - two by game MVP Terrel Bernard - and three interceptions. "I would not put it as necessarily as a point to prove," Baylor coach Dave Aranda said when summing up the significance of the victory. "I would say it as more of an identity to show...Just to take the stage and to take the lights and the crowd and all of that and to, like, be us - all the way, man. "You want other people to see it," Aranda continued. "I'm appreciative that we had the opportunity, and we took advantage of it." - Baylor/AP College Football
