If UCF football coach Gus Malzahn were required to choose a starting quarterback between sophomore Mikey Keene and Ole Miss transfer John Rhys Plumlee tomorrow, he'd likely have to flip a coin. "Right now it's as even as it can get," Malzahn said Thursday about the quarterback battle during AAC football media day. Malzahn reiterated his plan to wait to name a starter after the first two scrimmages of UCF's fall camp that kicks off Sunday when the players report and start practice Monday.

Malzahn, who's entering his second year at UCF after coaching at Auburn from 2013-20, shared how some quarterback battles he's handed have gone in the past. "In my experience with quarterbacks, naming [a starter], setting a date and all of that, it's really tough," he said. "Usually there's a time in fall camp that something happens where everyone on the team knows who the starting quarterback is and a lot of the times the coach doesn't even have to say anything. "So we're hoping that happens." Keene took over the starting job last season after former UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel broke his collarbone in the third week of the season. A true freshman a year ago, Keene struggled at times but got better as the season went on. After throwing 6 interceptions in his first five starts, Keene wasn't picked off once in the final five. He finished with more than 1,700 yards, completing 63% of his passes for 17 touchdowns. - Orlando Sentinel

It's a phrase used by most football coaches when asking their players to leave any individualistic ideologies at the front door and completely immerse themselves into the system and trust the process. And following the mass exodus the Arizona State Sun Devils football team just experienced this past offseason, the ones who chose to either stay or transfer to Tempe have done just that. "Getting everybody to buy in. We're trying to reestablish this culture and getting guys to buy in," redshirt senior defensive end Michael Matus said at Sun Devil football media day on Monday.

"It's been a big mess outside media-wise. And just kind of helping people just drown that out and just get to playing ball. That's all we need to do." That "outside media" noise - which stems from the ongoing NCAA investigation for alleged recruiting violations that has also already seen numerous coaches depart - has resulted in perhaps the lowest expectations going into a regular season since head coach Herm Edwards took over in 2018. In fact, FanDuel Sportsbook has ASU's win total for the season currently at 5.5. Remember, teams need six wins to become bowl eligible. "My expectations are a lot different than I would say your guys' expectations," captain Kyle Soelle said Monday. "They have us at what, 5.5 wins this year? He also led Wyoming in rushing with 1,070 yards on 209 attempts and scored six times. Valladay, a graduate transfer, brings in a versatile style that involves running and catching when necessary. Nevada offensive lineman Aaron Frost was the Wolf Pack's lone representative on the preseason All-Mountain West team. Nevada wound up with a single entry on the Mountain West's preseason all-conference football team, with offensive lineman Aaron Frost earning his third MW honor Thursday. Frost, entering his fifth year with the Wolf Pack, has finished the last two seasons as an All-Mountain West second-team honoree. He appeared in all 13 Nevada games last season, lifting his career appearances for the Pack to 43. Frost joined what turned out to be a veteran-heavy preseason All-MW team. Of the 27 players named, 24 are listed as seniors. The preseason All-MW teams were voted on by media members who regularly cover the conference. - Reno Gazette Journal

As a true freshman, Mike Keene found himself thrust into the role of UCF's starting quarterback four games into last season when Dillon Gabriel went down with a season-ending injury. Keene led the Knights to wins in seven of their remaining 10 games, capped with a victory over Florida in the Gasparilla Bowl. It was the perfect springboard for the Arizona product, who spent much of spring camp with eyes on returning as the starter after Gabriel's departure through the transfer portal. The addition of Ole Miss transfer John Rhys Plumlee has added a competitive element, pushing Keene throughout spring and into fall camp.

"I'm working on being in the weight room, getting some extra film work in and working on the timing with the wideouts," Keene told the Orlando Sentinel. "I've been focusing on my diet and, of course, I'm in summer school as well. Everything has been pretty honed in and I've been focused. "We'll get home for a week and then get back to it and get camp going and before we know it, the season is going to be here." Keene recently helped out former UCF quarterback McKenzie Milton, who hosted a quarterbacks camp in Orlando last weekend. Milton's presence in the football program has been appreciated by many, including the current Knights signal-caller. "It's been great for the quarterbacks and especially for me," Keene said. "To pick his brain whenever he's around and look to him as a mentor, it's been huge for me just knowing what he's done at this university." - Orlando Sentinel

If there's a team in the Pac-12 that could challenge Colorado for the most tumultuous offseason in the portal, it's ASU. The Sun Devils lost 20 players, including three-year starting quarterback Jayden Daniels (LSU); three starting wide receivers in Ricky Pearsall (Florida), LV Bunkley-Shelton (Oklahoma) and Johnny Wilson (Florida State); their top returning running back, DeaMonte Trayanum (Ohio State to play linebacker); starting linebacker Eric Gentry (Southern California); and one of the best defensive tackles in the Pac-12, Jermayne Lole (Louisville).

Several quality depth players left, as well. The Sun Devils did, however, add 13 players, including Jones, Silvera and Valladay - who are all expected to make an immediate impact. In addition, offensive linemen Des Holmes (Penn State), Chris Martinez (San Diego State) and Joey Ramos (Iowa State) are expected to compete for starting jobs, as is tight end Messiah Swinson (Missouri). - Daily Camera

With massive roster turnover that Arizona State football has endured this offseason, the need to lean on the remaining past leaders and find emerging ones is of great importance. Enter Arizona State senior captain linebacker Kyle Soelle and junior cornerback Jordan Clark. They are expected to take over the leadership reins of the Sun Devil defense that will see plenty of new faces entering next season. "The leadership role has been an easy transition, but my teammates hold me accountable just like I do them," Clark said on a Zoom call Wednesday.

Soelle has a little more of a reputation built up. He registered a team-leading 88 tackles, including eight tackles for loss, for the Sun Devils a year ago. Clark didn't see the field as frequently but still contributed with 21 tackles, one interception and two passes defensed. "(As a leader), the most important thing I can do is be there for them and be a helping hand," Soelle said. True freshman quarterback Mikey Keene returns after stepping into the starting role following the injury to starter Dillon Gabriel, but he faces a challenge from Ole Miss transfer John Rhys Plumlee. Tailbacks Isaiah Bowser and Johnny Richardson are back, giving the Knights a nice one-two punch from the backfield. The defense lost its leading tackler in linebacker Tatum Bethune but transfers KD McDaniel (Kentucky) and Lee Hunter (Auburn) should give the group a boost. Another strong season is in the cards for UCF with its most significant challenge coming in Cincinnati, which the Knights host on Oct. 29. - Orlando Sentinel

Kyle Soelle made a tackle on 13% of his snaps, generated pressure on 20% of his pass-rush attempts, made 11 run stops at or behind the line and allowed a 17.4 QBR in coverage. He's absolutely dynamite, and ASU might need him to be even better this year. Soelle recorded 88 tackles in 13 games as a captain of the defense in 2021. The Arizona native added eight tackles for loss, one sack and one interception last season. Defensively, the team lost DTs D.J. Davidson and Jermayne Lole, LBs Eric Gentry and Darien Butler as well as CBs Jack Jones and Chase Lucas to either the transfer portal or NFL Draft.
