Xazavian Valladay, Arizona State, Player News

Emory Jones adeptly orchestrated the offense, showed off his elusiveness on a touchdown run. Xazavian Valladay juked and jolted his way for big chunks of yards. Arizona State's two marquee transfers had sterling debuts and the rest of the new-look Sun Devils were sharp most of the night, opening the season with an easy win over an FCS opponent. Jones ran for two touchdowns in his desert debut, Halladay ran for 116 yards and a score, and the Sun Devils opened their fifth season under coach Herm Edwards with a 40-3 win over Northern Arizona on Thursday night. "There's a lot of things we have to work on, but the composure of the team was good," Edwards said. "With all these new guys on the sideline, you didn't know how they were going to act, but they were good." The Sun Devils needed a few series to jell with 43 new players on their roster. Once they got rolling, the Lumberjacks could do little to stop them.

Carter Brown kicked four field goals, Arizona State led 24-3 at halftime and outgained Northern Arizona 419-120 in total yards to win its 23rd straight home opener. The Sun Devils are 17-0 all-time against FCS schools. Valladay, a Wyoming transfer, showed off the speed that's made him the nation's active leading rusher, reeling off a 27-yard TD run early in the third quarter. Jones had poise in the pocket and made good decisions, scoring on a 1-yard dive in the second quarter and a 17-yard run just before halftime. "We got a first win and have many more good things to come," said Jones, who threw for 152 yards on 13-of-18 passing and ran for 48 yards. - Arizona State/AP College Football

The Sun Devils lost their top two running backs, Rachaad White to the draft and DeaMonte "Chip" Trayanum to the transfer portal. When you throw in the yardage now-departed quarterback Daniels had and other losses and the Sun Devils return just 378 rushing yards of their 2021 total of 2,540 yards. While Daniyel Ngata has shown considerable potential, the Sun Devils needed a back with a proven track record and they got one in Valladay, a second-team All-Mountain West selection at Wyoming.

Valladay rushed for 1,070 yards and six touchdowns on 209 carries (5.1 ypg) the past season. The 6-foot, 198-pounder ran for more than 100 yards in four games, his best outing coming in a 27-21 Mountain West Conference loss to San Jose State when he totaled 172 yards on 22 tries. He also registered 23 receptions for 233 yards. He had a total of 3,281 yards and 19 touchdowns on 626 carries (5.24 ypg) in his Wyoming career. - Arizona Republic

2022 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD CANDIDATE: Xazavian Valladay (Sr.), Arizona State,...Before getting into the football stuff, let's note the rarity of having one name that contains the letters X, Z and V. Moving on, running back Xazavian Valladay (6-0, 200) transferred from Wyoming to Arizona State in January 2022 after averaging over five yards per carry in 2021. He also led Wyoming in rushing with 1,070 yards on 209 attempts and scored six times. Valladay, a graduate transfer, brings in a versatile style that involves running and catching when necessary. Valladay hit his career high in receiving yards last season with 233 yards on 23 catches. - AZCentral.com

If there's a team in the Pac-12 that could challenge Colorado for the most tumultuous offseason in the portal, it's ASU. The Sun Devils lost 20 players, including three-year starting quarterback Jayden Daniels (LSU); three starting wide receivers in Ricky Pearsall (Florida), LV Bunkley-Shelton (Oklahoma) and Johnny Wilson (Florida State); their top returning running back, DeaMonte Trayanum (Ohio State to play linebacker); starting linebacker Eric Gentry (Southern California); and one of the best defensive tackles in the Pac-12, Jermayne Lole (Louisville).

Several quality depth players left, as well. The Sun Devils did, however, add 13 players, including Jones, Silvera and Valladay - who are all expected to make an immediate impact. In addition, offensive linemen Des Holmes (Penn State), Chris Martinez (San Diego State) and Joey Ramos (Iowa State) are expected to compete for starting jobs, as is tight end Messiah Swinson (Missouri). - Daily Camera

University of Wyoming junior running back Xazavian Valladay continues to earn national recognition. On Wednesday, Valladay was named to the Doak Walker Award Preseason Watch List. This marks the second year in a row Valladay has been on the preseason watch list for the award, which is presented annually to the nation's top college running back. The 6-foot, 198 pounder was named to the Maxwell Award Preseason Watch List. The award recognizes the most outstanding player in college football. Valladay was a first-team All-Mountain West selection last year despite missing the final game of the pandemic-shortened season with an injury. Valladay rushed for a team-high 550 yards last season, including a 163-yard performance against Hawaii and a 147-yard effort at Colorado State. - Casper Star-Tribune

Sean Chambers isn't the only significant piece to Wyoming's offense looking to get through a full season with a relatively clean bill of health. Sure, Wyoming's quarterback will garner most of the attention in that regard given his well-documented injury history, but Xazavian Valladay also has aspirations of getting through the spring and this fall as close to full strength as possible. The Cowboys' No. 1 running back admitted it's been on his mind a lot this offseason. "I was thinking to myself that, playing football, I haven't been through 12 games without an injury," Valladay said. "That's one of my biggest goals that I'm trying to focus on is what can I do to stay better, stay longer on the field and just be more of a durable back instead of leaning more toward (being) injury-prone?" Fortunately for Valladay, the injuries he's sustained haven't been significant enough that he hasn't been able to finish a season. But they've been nagging enough to slow him down and even keep him on the sideline at times. - Casper Star-Tribune

At the beginning of last season, Xazavian Valladay was Wyoming's unquestioned RB1. By the end of it, Trey Smith held that distinction. The Cowboys once again have a backfield duo that's virtually interchangeable in that role. At first, there was a chance Valladay would be the only half of that pairing to return to UW for another season. But Smith, who had already been in the program for two years after transferring from Louisville, decided to use the free year of eligibility granted to seniors by the NCAA and run it back at UW. It gives the Cowboys' running game one of the Mountain West's top 1-2 punches heading into the spring. Valladay, a redshirt junior last season, led the league in rushing on a per-game basis in 2019 before finishing third in the conference in rushing yards (550) during the Cowboys' pandemic-shortened season last fall. A late-season injury forced him to miss a game and limited him to just 17 carries in the final two games he played, but UW's production on the ground didn't drop off much thanks to Smith. - Casper Star-Tribune

It may be later than usual, but Wyoming's football team will have a spring this year. At least that's the plan. UW is slated to begin spring practice April 6, head coach Craig Bohl said Monday. The Cowboys' annual Brown and Gold game is also tentatively slated for May 8 at War Memorial Stadium, which gives UW more than four weeks to get their 15 spring practices in based on the current schedule. The Cowboys usually begin spring drills in mid-to-late March, but Bohl said he wanted to buy more time this spring amid the coronavirus pandemic, which kept UW from holding spring practices last year. - Casper Star-Tribune

After not making the trip to Las Vegas last week, Xazavian Valladay (leg) was listed as the No. 2 running back behind Trey Smith on UW's updated depth chart Monday. But Bohl said Valladay will be back at practice this week and should be available in some capacity Saturday. "I don't know if he's going to be serviceable or if he's going to be 100 percent," Bohl said. "We'll know as the week goes along." - Casper Star-Tribune

Wyoming is still awaiting word on its top running back. UW coach Craig Bohl said Monday afternoon he still didn't have any information on the status of Xazavian Valladay, who was injured in the Cowboys' win at UNLV last week. Bohl said after the game Valladay would undergo an MRI on his left leg. "We'll get some more information later on (Monday)," Bohl said. "If I had it right now, I'd give it to you."

Valladay left the game early in the second quarter after being upended at the tail end of his lone reception, ending what had been a prolific day for the junior up to that point. Valladay had 94 yards on his first six carries, including a career-long 78-yard touchdown run on UW's second play from scrimmage. The Cowboys kept things moving on the ground in Valladay's absence, finishing with a season-high 399 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns. Valladay's running mate, Trey Smith, stepped in to rush for a career-high 164 yards as UW averaged a whopping 7 yards per carry. - Casper Star-Tribune

Xazavian Valladay ran for 204 yards and scored two touchdowns, quarterback Levi Williams accounted for four scores and Wyoming rolled over Georgia State. Wyoming (8-5) started slow before scoring two quick touchdowns late in the first quarter and early in the second. The Cowboys built a 14-point lead by halftime and racked up 524 total yards to win a bowl game after being left out of the postseason last year. Williams made his first career start after Tyler Vander Waal entered the transfer portal but remained with the team for bowl practices. The freshman was poised under the bowl spotlight, throwing for three touchdowns and running for another. Georgia State (7-6) jumped to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter but had a hard time stopping the big-play Cowboys.
