South Alabama will play the 2022 football season without one of its most-experienced and respected defensive players. Safety Keith Gallmon is out for the season with a torn pectoral (chest) muscle suffered in the Jaguars' Aug. 13 scrimmage, head coach Kane Wommack said Saturday. Gallmon, a Mobile native and a three-year starter, was a first-team All-Sun Belt Conference pick in the preseason. "Unfortunately, we've lost Keith Gallmon for the season," Wommack said. "He's got a torn pectoral muscle that we're going to need to get fixed. If he's going to come back at full capacity, it's going to require season-ending surgery. … I hate to lose him, hate it for a guy that means so much to this program."

The 5-foot-9, 203-pound Gallmon, who played his high school ball at Mobile Christian, has started 35 consecutive games for the Jaguars and has played in 46 of a possible 47 games during his college career. He totaled a team-best 59 tackles in 2021, in addition to 2.5 tackles for loss, two pass breakups and an interception. At the end of spring practice, Gallmon was awarded the honorary No. 5 jersey for the Jaguars' Sept. 3 season-opener vs. Nicholls State. A different South Alabama player is chosen by the coaching staff each week during the season to wear the 5 jersey, given in remembrance of late Jaguars running back Anthony Mostella. - Birmingham News
