Pitt's football team appears to have dodged a bullet on Saturday. According to a source who spoke on the condition of anonymity, quarterback Kedon Slovis sustained a "minor" injury during a closed practice at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on the South Side. The source said there is no cause for concern and the injury is not expected to impact Slovis' chances of winning the starting job for the season opener vs. West Virginia on Sept. 1.

A 6-foot-3, 215-pound grad transfer, Slovis started 27 games over the last three seasons at USC, passing for 7,576 yards and 58 touchdowns with a 68.4% completion rate since winning the starting job as a freshman in 2019. His freshman season was his best, when he completed 71.9% of his passes for 3,502 yards, 30 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Slovis is locked in a heated competition with redshirt senior Nick Patti for the starting quarterback position, with coach Pat Narduzzi giving no indication of a timetable to announce the Panthers' starter. - Pittsburgh Post Gazette
