When it came to special teams during the 2021 college football season, Texas Tech had one of the most potent one-two punches a team could ask for in Austin McNamara and Jonathan Garibay. McNamara averaged 48.2 yards per punt, the highest average in Texas Tech and Big 12 history. Garibay made 15 of 16 field goals, including a pair of late game winners: one for 32 yards at West Virginia and another for 62 yards to vanquish Iowa State. Garibay gave up his last year of eligibility and signed a free-agent deal with the Dallas Cowboys, leaving the Red Raiders to stage a competition to be his replacement. Better news for Tech on the punter front: McNamara will handle that duty for the Red Raiders for the fourth year in a row, taking a career average of 46.3 yards into 2022. Tech ranked fifth in the FBS last season in net punting - gross yards, less return yards - at 43.98 yards.
