Although nothing is yet official, all signs point toward sophomore Desmond Trotter winning the starting quarterback job over junior-college transfer Chance Lovertich. Trotter started the final four games of 2019 for the Jaguars, and threw four touchdown passes in a 34-30, season-ending win over Arkansas State. Campbell said that "Desmond is the 1 and Chance is the 2," though offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield left open the possibility both could play vs. Southern Miss. "I like the way our quarterbacks are playing right now," Edenfield said. "I think Desmond and Chance both will play; they both had have a good fall camp. They're both ready to play and I think either one of them can get the job done for us." In three fall scrimmages, Trotter - the grandson of Alabama and NFL great Ozzie Newsome - has completed 23 of 41 passes for 281 yards and three touchdowns with three interceptions. Lovertich, who led Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College to the NJCAA championship last season, has completed 26 of 53 passes for 285 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. - Birmingham News
