Dante Cephas announced Sunday that he's transferring from Kent State to Penn State. Cephas, one of the best players available in the transfer portal, could become the Nittany Lions' No. 1 wide receiver in 2023 after racking up 130 catches for 1,984 yards and 12 touchdowns the past seasons with the Golden Flashes. The former Penn Hills star is slated to finish classes at Kent State before enrolling at Penn State in the summer. Cephas will have two years of eligibility remaining. Cephas was near the top o f James Franklin's portal wish list and with reason.The Pittsburgh native has the ability to change Penn State's offensive trajectory in 2023, just as he did with Penn Hills four years ago. "They're getting the complete package in Dante," former P enn Hills coach Jon LeDonne said. "He's a big, long, athletic receiver. Very, very explosive. He's not afraid to go across the middle. He's a strong individual as well." LeDonne called Cephas "a happy guy who's always in a good mood." The coach never had any issues with him in their two seasons together, only fond memories. LeDonne, now the coach at Pine-Richland, remembers arriving at Penn Hills in June 2017. One of the first things he did was watch tape from the 2016 junior varsity team to see if he h ad any up-and-comers. Cephas jumped out right away. Cephas, a Pittsburgh native and Penn Hills graduate, joins the N ittany Lions after securing 130 catches for 1,984 yards and 12 touchdowns the past two seasons at Kent State. Wide receiver Parker Washington and tight end Brenton Strange left early for the NFL while Mitchell Tinsley ran out of eligibility, p rompting Penn State to aggressively pursue playmakers in the portal. Cephas was always near the top of Penn State's list of targets, if not at the top. The 6-foot-1 receiver announced that he was entering the portal on Dec. 4, and he had an offer from he ad coach James Franklin and area recruiter Terry Smith a day later.Cephas also fielded offers from Georgia, Notre Dame, Pitt, Oklahoma, Miami and more, making him one of the most sought-after players in the portal. Cephas was ranked No. 24 overall among portal players, according to on3. This level of attention is a nice change of pace for Cephas, who was lightly recruited coming out of Penn Hills. The former teammate of Penn State cornerback Daequan Hardy didn't receive any Power Five offers a fe w years ago, garnering interest from only Kent State, Bowling Green, Toledo, Eastern Kentucky and Howard. Now, Cephas immediately becomes the most prolific receiver in Penn State's room. The Nittany Lions also have KeAndre Lambert-Smith (389 yards, four TDs in 2022) and Harrison Wallace III (273 yards, one TD) at receiver as well as a crop of freshmen from the 2022 recruiting class. OCT 3 MAC EAST DIVISION OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Dante Cephas, Kent State, WR, R-Junior, Pittsburgh, PA (Penn Hills),...Cephas set a program record and has the high-water mark in the FBS this season with a 246 yard day against the Bobcats on 13 rece ptions. Cephas saved his best for the second half, amassing 11 catches and 230 yards after the intermission. Highlighting his day was an acrobatic 29-yard TD catch where he shook off an interfering defender and made a remarkable catch in the endzone and staying in bounds. It wasn't all "go-routes" for the Pittsburgh native, Cephas had 129 yards after catch on Saturday. - MAC Football

Kent State's Dante Cephas set the national season high for receiving yards with his 246 against Ohio. His 13 catches are tied for second most in an FBS game. Cephas, averaging a Mid-American Conference-leading 100.2 yards receiving per game, broke the sc hool single-game record set by Eugene Baker in 1997. Marquez Cooper rushed for a career-high 240 yards including the winning touchdown in overtime, Dante Cephas made several clutch catches on his way to personal best 246 yards receiving and Kent State defeated Ohio 31-24 on Saturday in a Mid-American Confe rence opener for both teams. After Kent State (2-3, 1-0) had a 47-yard field-goal attempt blocked to finish a wild final four minutes of regulation, Cephas made a catch and struggled through several defenders to reach the Ohio 1-yard line on the first pl ay of overtime. It took three plays before Cooper scored. Ohio (2-3, 0-1) reached the 5-yard line on its overtime possession but three straight incompletions ended the Bobcats' bid.Ohio was leading 17-10 late in the fourth quarter when Cephas tied the game with a sterling 29-yard catch on the right edge of the end zone. Ohio responded on its next play from scrimmage with Kurtis Rourke connecting on a 71-yard touchdown pass play with Sam Wiglusz. Schlee tied the game with a 2-yard run, covering th e final 36 yards of the 75-yard drive himself on the ground after Devontez Walker made a pair of big receptions. Schlee threw for a career-high 398 yards and Walker had 107 yards receiving, another career high. Rourke threw for 322 yards and two touchdow ns for Ohio with Wiglusz collecting a career-high 115 yards receiving and Sieh Bangura adding 99 yards rushing. Kent State's Dante Cephas is a proven big-play receiver. Last year the Kent State football team opened preseason camp with no proven leader at the wide receiver position, following the early departure of deep threat Isaiah McKoy. Dante Cephas was one of several wideouts considered a prime contender to help fill the big-play shoes of McKoy heading into the 2021 season, after catching 15 passes in seven games during his first two years with the Golden Flashes. Now, heading into the hotly anticipated 2022 campaign, Cephas is the unquestioned leader of defending Mid-American Conference East Division champion Kent State's talented receiving corp.Cephas became the first KSU player to surpass 1,000 yards receiving since 1997 last fall, when he earned F irst Team All-MAC honors by catching 82 passes for 1,240 yards and nine touchdowns in 14 contests. Those lofty numbers are nearly identical to the ones McKoy produced while earning All-MAC recognition in 2019 and 2020 - 81 catches for 1,327 yards and 13 touchdowns in 15 games. Obviously, Cephas played close attention to McKoy during his first two years with the Flashes.
