2023 AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Michael Pratt, QB, Tulane,...Pratt becomes the second consecutive Tulane player to be named as Offensive Player of the Year, following running back Tyjae Spears' win last season. Pratt has gone 10-0 as Tulane's starter this season and has gone 21-2 in the last two years, leading the Green Wave to back-to-back appearances in The American Championship Game. Pratt leads The American and ranks 10th nationally in pass efficiency (164.94) and enters the postseason with 2,168 passing yards and 21 touchdowns against only four interceptions - the fewest of any starting quarterback in The American. A four-year starter, Pratt has passed for 9,364 career yards and 89 touchdowns with 25 interceptions and has 27 career rushing touchdowns. - AAC Football

Assuming he stays healthy in his fourth year as a starter, he will shatter the school records for career touchdown passes (he needs four to tie Patrick Ramsey's 72 ) and yards passing (he needs 2,008 to match Ramsey). "Any time there is any level of success, some bigger schools will come at you and offer you some things," Pratt said. "You think the grass is always greener at other places, but just to be able to come back here with this staff again with my guys for one more year, it was definitely in my best interest to stay here with the people I know and the place where I'm comfortable." Continuity was a huge factor. After playing for a different offensive coordinator in each of his seven years of high school and college football, Pratt jumped at the chance to work with Slade Nagle again.

Technically, Nagle was not the Wave's offensive coordinator last season, but he called the plays and served as de facto coordinator until getting the job officially before spring drills. "We played to (Pratt's) strengths some times, and his strengths are he likes to run and he likes to play physical," Nagle said. "It's his natural ability, so hopefully we can keep him healthy throughout the year." If Pratt excelled while hurt down the stretch, imagine what he can do when his foot feels 100 percent. He weighed in at a career-high 225 pounds before spring practice, giving him extra confidence in his durability. "This is the healthiest I've ever felt," he said. "I'm a lot stronger than I've ever been. My body feels a lot better. I'm moving really well, so I will be able to be more physical, run faster and extend plays this year." - New Orleans Times Picayune

Michael Pratt eased plenty of minds when he announced last week he would return to Tulane for his fourth year. Plenty of power five schools would have loved to have him as a starter next season. Always an outstanding leader, he has matured into an outstanding quarterback, accounting for 15 touchdowns rushing and passing in three of his last four games. In the other one, he went 3 for 3 for 71 yards and the winning score immediately after Cincinnati took its first and only lead in the fourth quarter. - New Orleans Times Picayune

Pratt ranks second in the league in passing efficiency (155.7) and is fourth in passing touchdowns, seventh in passing yards and eighth in passing yards per game (216.5).   12/03/22 - QB Michael PrattSr/2024, Tulane, 6-3, 217 (DS#8 QB) + More +

Michael Pratt accounted for 442 total yards and five touchdowns, Tyjae Spears highlighted his 199 yards rushing with a 60-yard score and No. 18 Tulane beat No. 22 UCF 45-28 on Saturday night in the American Athletic Conference championship game. The victory virtually assured Tulane (11-2) would play in the Cotton Bowl - its first major New Year's Day bowl since the 1939 season - only one season after going 2-10. Jubilant fans stormed field as the game ended, capping a campaign that would have been hard to conceive of a year ago with an equally unthinkable celebratory scene. Pratt passed for a career-high 394 yards, including touchdowns of 73 yards to Duece Watts, 60 and 10 yards to Shae Wyatt and 43 yards to Lawrence Keys. Pratt also ran for a pivotal 18-yard touchdown with 4:04 left. Spears electrified the sellout crowd of 30,118 at Tulane's cozy, on-campus Yulman Stadium with his long scoring run on which he broke two tackles near the line of scrimmage, made two other defenders miss and hurndled his own fallen teammate after cutting back inside. The Green Wave, which earned the right to host the title game by ending Cincinnati's 32-game home winning streak last weekend, avenged a 38-31 regular-season loss to UCF (9-4) on the same field three weeks ago.

But UCF was not quite the same team because of QB John Rhys Plumlee's nagging hamstring injury, which appeared to rob him of the explosiveness he displayed by running for 176 yards at Tulane on Nov. 12. Plumlee struggled so much early on that coach Gus Malzahn pulled him from the game in the second quarter favor of Thomas Castellanos. But with Tulane up 24-7 in the middle of the third quarter, Malzahn put Plumlee back in as primarily a passer - and he nearly led the Kights all the way back. Plumlee led UCF quickly for a touchdown to make it 24-14, converting a fourth-and-10 pass along the way and capping the drive with a 17-yarder to Kobe Hudson. Tulane responded when both UCF safeties froze on a play-fake to Spears and Pratt found Watts running free behind the defense. UCF cut it to 31-21 when former Virginia QB RJ Harvey took a backward pass from Plumlee and launched a 49-yard TD pass to Hudson. And the Knights got the ball right back when Spears fumbled after catching a short pass on the Green Wave 30. And Isaiah Bowser's 10-yard run shortly after got UCF as close as 31-28 with 9:48 still to play. But Pratt again found a way to lead the Wave down the field, connecting with Wyatt for the longer of his two touchdowns, and UCF didn't threaten again. - Tulane/AP College Football

NOV 21 AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Michael Pratt, Jr., QB, Tulane,...Pratt figured in six touchdowns to lead Tulane to a 59-24 win against SMU, keeping the Green Wave tied for first place in the American Athletic Conference standings entering the final week of conference play. Pratt was an efficient 9-of-14 for 141 yards and three touchdowns and added 70 rushing yards on 10 carries with three TDs on the ground before coming out of the game with the Green Wave ahead 56-14. Pratt ranks second in The American in pass efficiency (157.29) and has thrown only four interceptions — the fewest of any starting quarterback in the conference. - American Athletic Conference Football

Michael Pratt passed for three touchdowns and ran for three scores, and No. 21 Tulane capitalized on a slew of SMU mistakes to beat the Mustangs 59-24 on Thursday night. Tyjae Spears carried 13 times for 121 yards - his fifth straight game eclipsing 100 yards rushing. He scored two touchdowns rushing and another receiving for Tulane (9-2, 6-1 American Athletic Conference), which beat SMU for the first time in eight meetings and can clinch a berth in the conference title game by winning its regular-season finale at Cincinnati. SMU (6-5, 4-3) came in as one of the top offenses in the AAC, averaging 486.4 yards and a league-high 40.3 points per game. But the Mustangs were plagued by dropped passes and five turnovers as they dropped out of contention for a conference title game berth.

Tanner Mordecai was intercepted twice and lost a fumble when he was sacked by Darius Hodges. SMU fumbled five times in all, losing three. The Mustangs' first turnover came on a muffed punt by Roderick Daniels that Tulane long snapper Ethan Hudak recovered on the SMU 7. That set up Spears' TD reception to make it 21-0 late in the first quarter. A muffed punt by Tulane returner Jha'Quan Jackson deep in Green Wave territory looked like a potential momentum changer when SMU immediately converted that break into a 19-yard TD pass from Mordecai to RJ Maryland. But the Green Wave responded quickly with Michael Pratt's 26-yard, tackle-slipping scoring run. Tulane opened the second half by widening its lead to 35-7 on Pratt's floating, 26-yard timing pass to Shae Wyatt, who made an over-the-shoulder catch and narrowly got his feet in bounds before falling out of the left side of the end zone. One play after Tulane safety Lummie Young intercepted Mordecai, Pratt found Wyatt well behind the SMU defense for a 46-yard score that made it 49-7. Wyatt finished with three catches for 104 yards. - Tulane/AP College Football

Michael Pratt threw for a touchdown and ran for another, Tyjae Spears ran for 125 yards and another score and No. 25 Tulane celebrated its first Top 25 ranking since 1998 with a dominant first half and hung on to beat Memphis 38-28 on Saturday. The Green Wave (7-1, 4-0 American Athletic) scored on three of their first four possessions and took a 35-0 lead into the second half before the Tigers rallied. Seth Henigan had 257 of his 312 passing yards in the second half for the Tigers (4-4, 2-3), finishing with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Eddie Lewis hauled in two of the touchdowns, finishing with three receptions for 94 yards. Pratt and the Tulane offense drove 80 yards in 11 plays on their opening drive, with the Green Wave quarterback running it in from six yards out to make it 7-0.

The first of Memphis' two special teams miscues came after their first drive stalled, as Tulane's Jha'Quan Jackson caught the resulting punt at his 10, got a key block before exploding down the right sideline for the 90-yard return for a touchdown. The Green Wave recovered a muffed put at the Memphis 12, and Spears took it in three plays later to make it 21-0 with 2:02 remaining in the opening quarter. Memphis finally got untracked in the third quarter with a pair of touchdown passes from Henigan, first on a 7-yard pass to Koby Drake and then a 33-yard strike to Lewis. Henigan connected with Lewis again for a 55-yard score with just over four minutes left in the game to pull the Tigers to within 10, but the ensuing onside attempt went out of bounds. A final drive ended when the Tigers drove to the Tulane 6, but Henigan was intercepted in the end zone. Pratt threw for 158 yards. - Tulane/AP College Football

Michael Pratt accounted for four touchdowns and Tulane pulled away in the second half for a 45-31 victory over South Florida on Saturday. Pratt was 23-of-35 passing for 329 yards with two touchdown passes and a pair of short-yardage TD runs. Tyjae Spears added 148 yards rushing and two touchdowns for Tulane (6-1, 3-0 American Conference), which has won three straight. Spears ran up the middle, slipped a tackle and then ran 75 yards into the end zone to give Tulane a 24-17 advantage. Pratt's touchdown pass and run in the fourth stretched the lead to 45-24 with 9:08 remaining. Jha'Quan Jackson had seven receptions for 86 yards to lead the Green Wave. Duece Watts and Dea Dea McDougle each had a touchdown catch. Katravis Marsh and Gerry Bohanon were a combined 14-of-23 passing for 259 yards for South Florida (1-6, 0-3).   Michael Pratt threw for 326 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a third while Tulane held East Carolina scoreless in the second half en route to a 24-9 victory on Saturday. East Carolina (3-3, 2-2 American) took a 9-7 lead when Holton Ahlers found C.J. Johnson with a 24-yard touchdown with 12:08 left in the first half but had a 46-yard field goal attempt to end the first half blocked. Ahlers threw two second-half interceptions, one in the end zone, and the Pirates were stopped on fourth down twice in the fourth quarter. Pratt found Tyrick James with a three-yard scoring pass to start the second quarter and wedged in from a yard out to take a 14-9 lead at the break. He launched a 44-yard touchdown pass to Deuce Watts, who reached up to snare the ball over a Pirate defender at the 6 and bounced into the end zone with the ball held high. The win was the second straight for the Green Wave (5-1, 2-0). - Tulane/AP College Football

Michael Pratt overcame two costly interceptions with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Tyrick James with 4:27 left and Tulane upset Kansas State 17-10 on Saturday. K-State came into the game favored by two touchdowns. The Green Wave stopped the Wildcats on fourth-and-short twice in the third quarter and again in the fourth. K-State finished 1 for 5 on fourth down. It was Tulane's first road victory over a Power-5 conference school since beating Rutgers in 2010. Rutgers was part of the Big East that season. The two teams came into the game having allowed a combined total of 22 points in two games. It was the second meeting between the two schools. Tulane came from behind to defeat K-State 20-16 in 1988, the year before coach Bill Snyder took over the Wildcats' program. Pratt was 13-of-26 passing with a touchdown and two interceptions, but came up big in the clutch for Tulane (3-0).

Adrian Martinez was 21-of-31 passing for 150 yards and a touchdown for Kansas State (2-1). Running back Deuce Vaughn was held to 81 yards on 20 carries, the first time in nine games that he's been held to fewer than 100 yards rushing. He was held out of the end zone for the first time in 10 games. Tulane grabbed the early lead on a 91-yard, nine-play drive, capped by a 1-yard run by Tyjae Spears. The Green Wave controlled the first quarter, out-gaining the Wildcats 125-46, even going against a strong wind. Kansas State tied it with 2:43 left in the second quarter on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Martinez to his former Nebraska teammate Kade Warner. That touchdown capped an eight-play, 75-yard drive. Tulane appeared to be marching toward a go-ahead score late in the quarter when Daniel Green picked off Pratt's pass at the KSU 28-yard line. He returned it 49 yards to the Tulane 23. A 22-yard field goal by Chris Tennant on the final play of the half gave K-State a 10-7 lead at the half. Tulane opened the second half scoring with a 30-yard field goal by Kriston Esnard to tie the score at 10. - Tulane/AP College Football

Michael Pratt passed for 318 yards and three touchdowns and Tulane romped past FCS-member Alcorn State 52-0 on Saturday. Tulane (2-0) used Kriston Esnard's 26-yard field and two short touchdown runs by freshman Shaadie Clayton and Lawrence Keys III to take a 17-0 lead after one quarter. Pratt connected with Jha'Quan Jackson for a 16-yard score and Tyrick James for a 25-yarder in the second quarter and the Green Wave took a 31-0 lead into halftime.

Pratt threw a 72-yard scoring strike to Shae Wyatt on Tulane's first possession of the second half and Dea Dea McDougle pitched in with a 16-yard TD run to push the lead to 45-0 through the third quarter. Backup freshman QB Justin Ibieta added a 3-yard scoring run in the final period. Pratt completed 17 of 21 pass attempts. Wyatt finished with five catches for 130 yards. Markevion Quinn and Aaron Allen combined to complete only 5 of 14 passes for 49 yards for Alcorn State. The Braves managed just 109 yards of offense. - Tulane/AP College Football

After persevering through an injury-affected 2021, Michael Pratt admitted he needed to get stronger to withstand the punishment quarterbacks receive in college. Mission accomplished. After playing at about 205 pounds at the beginning of last season, he said he weighed in at 218 on Wednesday and felt healthier than he had ever been. "My body's good," he said. "I just feel better overall." Pratt was banged up at the end of Tulane's opener at Oklahoma, injured his throwing shoulder two games later in the fourth quarter at Ole Miss and never was 100-percent healthy the rest of the way.

He also suffered a concussion on a massive hit while scrambling against SMU, forcing him to miss the next game against Cincinnati. Entering his third year as a starter, he expects to improve on his numbers from last season, when he completed 59.3 percent of his passes for 2,243 yards and 20 touchdowns with six interceptions. "The biggest thing is just the way the game slows down from year to year," he said. "It's a big adjustment from high school to college, and going into my second year things started to slow down and now it's at the point where the little things, the blitzes, all that kind of stuff, I just pick up a lot faster and it's kind of just habit at this point." - New Orleans Times Picayune

  12/05/20 - QB Michael PrattSr/2024, Tulane, 6-3, 217 (DS#8 QB) + More +

Freshman quarterback Michael Pratt threw for 254 yards and two touchdowns, ran for two more and may have iced the Tulane's 35-21 defeat of Memphis on Saturday when he was hit while scrambling on what was ruled a targeting penalty. Tulane led 28-21 and was driving in the fourth quarter when Pratt was forced to run on second-and-10. As he was going down, Memphis' Cole Mashburn came diving up to assist on the stop. Though a television replay showed no helmet-to-helmet contact, Masburn was disqualified for targeting and Tulane had a first-and-goal at the 9. Cam Carroll zig-zagged into the end zone on the next play and Tulane was up two touchdowns late against a Memphis team with five comeback victories this season.

The Green Wave (6-5, 3-5 American Athletic Conference) snapped the Tigers three-game win streak, outgaining Memphis (6-3, 4-3) 419 yards to 300 and scoring all four times they reached the red zone. Calvin Austin caught five passes for 110 yards for Memphis, his sixth 100-yard game in the last seven. Brady White passed for 248 yards with two TDs and two interceptions. White needs 56 more passing yards to surpass Danny Wimprine as career passing leader at Memphis. The Tigers have two games left. - AP College Football

  09/29/20 - QB Michael PrattSr/2024, Tulane, 6-3, 217 (DS#8 QB) + More +

Michael Pratt is a gamer, which is the exact word Tulane coach Willie Fritz used when asked about his freshman quarterback after the game. Replacing struggling quarterback Keon Howard, Pratt entered for the third series and won the starting job with a performance that belied his 8-of-18 passing numbers. Tulane is talented enough to have a big season with capable quarterback play, and Howard was not getting the job done through two games and two series. This rout was about much more than Pratt, but the whole vibe around the team feels different with a playmaker behind center. His perfect strike on a deep pass to wide receiver Jha'Quan Jackson might be the turning point of the season. - New Orleans Times Picayune
