Penn State's safety room will return a veteran leader in 2023. Keaton Ellis announced his intention to return for a fifth season with the Nittany Lions on Instagram Friday evening. Ellis has played 43 games in his Penn State career and started opposite fellow safety Ji'Ayir Brown in 2022. The State College native will have one more season to suit up for his hometown school and will be a figure of leadership in the Nittany Lions' secondary. - The Daily Collegian

Keaton Ellis' sophomore season was shortened by injuries and the COVID-19 pandemic. The usual 12 games the team would play was chopped down to nine, and that number was lowered even further to six for Ellis, who missed time with hamstring issues. Now with a second shot at his sophomore season - after the NCAA didn't count the 2020 season toward athletes' eligibility clock - Ellis returns to a crowded cornerback room with a clean bill of health ready to build upon what he's already accomplished. "I think we have one of the most competitive groups on the team," Ellis said Tuesday afternoon. "We've just been going at it...We're all working hard and there's a lot of talent in the room, so you've got to come out and compete every day."

The State College native is a part of one of Penn State's deepest positions. The Nittany Lions return all of their key contributors at cornerback from last season and will add multiple new faces. One of those new faces is a transfer - John Dixon - who enters the room with more experience than most newcomers. Dixon played in three games as a freshman at South Carolina, then all 10 as a sophomore last season before leaving for Penn State. Ellis said Dixon is already adding to the loaded position group. - Centre Daily

The first steps taken in the direction of Keaton Ellis' dream occurred when he ran a 4.39-second 40-yard dash at a Penn State camp. It was late spring, 2017. He hadn't even started his junior year at State College High School. Later that day, when coach James Franklin invited him into his office and offered a scholarship, Ellis fought back tears. Successfully, he told the Centre Daily Times. He was the first State College player offered by Penn State in 10 years. Not even three months later, he verbally committed to the Nittany Lions.

He had offers from Buffalo and Syracuse and had attended a Pitt camp, but his father, Bruce, was a walk-on wide receiver at Penn State in 1973 and was an assistant athletic director at the school. His mother was a student there, too. Was their son going to college anywhere else? Ellis played two more seasons at State College, became the third-ranked player in Pennsylvania and a four-star cornerback, per Rivals.com, and eventually joined Penn State's class of 2019 that ended up No. 11 in the nation. Ellis played in every game last season as a freshman, started the regular-season finale against Rutgers and finished with three forced fumbles. - Tribune Review
