Texas A&M wide receiver and punt returner Ainias Smith is returning for a fifth season, according to Smith's father, Maurice Smith. Ainias Smith later announced his decision on social media Thursday. "I have made many prayers and have had a plethora of thoughts, but after everything, I had to make an important decision that will set up my future," Smith said on the post. "With that being said, I will be returning to school for one more year. Aggie nation, let's run it back."

Smith spent the last several months weighing his options as he worked to rehabilitate a leg fracture suffered during the Aggies' 23-21 win over Arkansas at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Sept. 24. He had until Saturday to decide if he wanted to enter this year's NFL draft. His social media post Thursday included a video of Smith running drills on a what appears to be a healed leg. It concludes with Smith tossing A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher a football and telling him, "Let's run it back." Smith has 127 receptions for 1,612 yards and 17 touchdowns in four years at A&M. He also has rushed for 384 yards and four TDs on 67 carries. - Bryan/College Station Eagle

2022 COACHES PRESEASON ALL-SEC FIRST TEAM: AP & RS - Ainias Smith, Texas A&M,...Smith has been one of the most versatile players on the A&M roster since his arrival in Aggieland and was recognized for it by the league's coaches as he was named to the first team as an all-purpose player and return specialist, and the third team as a wide receiver. He ranked as one of the best punt returns in the country and was atop the A&M receiving corps as a junior, which led to him being named to the second team as a return specialist and third team as a wide receiver and all-purpose player by the league's media. - Texas A&M Football

Most were surprised when Texas A&M senior Ainias Smith was arrested on a trio of charges last month. That's not who they thought Smith was, and it turned out they were right, because the charges were later dropped. Smith missed a chance to represent himself and A&M at the Southeastern Conference Media Days last month, but he was front and center in the Kyle Field media center a few hours before A&M's first practice of fall camp late Wednesday afternoon. "That was a tough little time," Smith said. "I guess you could say my main thing about that whole situation was just lay low, keep praying and keep faith and let God take over basically." Smith was arrested on charges of DWI, possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana and unlawfully carrying a weapon.

The only thing he turned out to be guilty of was poor judgement, because the person in the car confessed to owning the marijuana and gun. Some had to think Smith was guilty, and possibly some still have doubt of his total innocence. "I think he came out and explained it," A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher said. "You tell the truth and you move on and don't worry about it. You can't worry about that. You have to go play and do the right things and make the right decisions each and every day." Smith was disappointed he didn't get to attend the SEC Media Days in Atlanta. "It was a great opportunity to build my brand and get a little bit more exposure for myself," Smith said. "But now that that's past, [I'm] not able to worry about that any more, and I'm excited to play ball. I mean, it's all I got left now." - Bryan/College Station Eagle

While dealing with the aftermath of a July arrest for DUI, possession of less than two ounces of marijuana and gun possession, Texas A&M wide receiver was unable to attend SEC Media Days. He was exonerated and charges were dropped, so this week he was more than happy to meet the press. "That was a tough little time," Smith said. "I guess you could say my main thing about that whole situation was just lay low, keep praying and keep faith and let God take over basically." "He's a leader," A&M junior defensive back Antonio Johnson said. "He leads best by example." The three-star recruit from Sugar Land Dulles came to A&M as a wide receiver. He moved to running back when needed then moved back to receiver. He also returns punts. He's Fisher's Swiss Army knife. "He'll be whoever he needs to be," said Johnson. "That's the best way I can put it." - Bryan/College Station Eagle

Texas A&M wide receiver Ainias Smith had his suspension from the team lifted recently, according to Fox26's Mark Berman. Berman spoke to College Station lawyer Craig Greening, who is representing Smith. "I confirmed with Ainias himself that the suspension has been lifted," Greening said. "He can return to football practice. It shows the university believes in his innocence, that they looked at all the facts and they believe the suspension should be lifted." Smith in accordance with school and athletics department policy was suspended following his arrest July 20 on charges of DWI, possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana and unlawfully carrying a weapon. Greening told Berman on Friday that he had reviewed the facts and his client had committed no crime based on the information he studied. - Bryan/College Station Eagle

The lawyer for A&M football player Ainias Smith said Friday his client is innocent of charges that got him arrested early Wednesday. Smith was charged with driving while intoxicated, possession of less than 2 oz. of marijuana and unlawful carrying of a weapon, according to police records. They all carry misdemeanor charges. "I've reviewed the police reports in the case," College Station attorney Craig Greening told Houston Fox26's Mark Berman on Friday. "I'm board certified in criminal law and I'm designated as a lawyer/scientist certified by the American Chemical Society; I've done DWIs for years. I've prosecuted them and I've defended them. I've reviewed the reports in this case and it was obvious that Mr. Smith was not intoxicated." A new law passed in 2021 allows for possession of a firearm in your car for those under 21 years of age as long as you're not committing another crime that's greater than a Class C misdemeanor or a traffic ticket, Greening said.

"Now that we have the passenger's statements stating that the marijuana was his and that Mr. Smith didn't know about it, never possessed it and also never smoked marijuana that day, there was no crime committed by Mr. Smith from what I've reviewed and all the reports that I've been able to see up to this point." Smith was pulled over by University Police while driving 51 mph in a 35-mph zone on University Drive. He was drifting in his lane, according to the probable cause statement. After failing multiple physical intoxication tests, Smith was arrested and consented to a breathalyzer test, which came back with .066 and .061 blood alcohol content readings. The legal limit in the state of Texas is .08. - Bryan/College Station Eagle

Texas A&M receiver Ainias Smith was arrested early Wednesday on charges of driving while intoxicated, unlawful carrying of a weapon and possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana, according to Brazos County jail records. Smith, 21, was arrested by Texas A&M police and was booked into the Brazos County jail. He posted $8,000 bond and was released later Wednesday, according to jail records. The records did not indicate if he had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

Smith has been suspended from the football team per athletic department policy following his arrest, according to Alan Cannon, a spokesman for Texas A&M. Cannon added that coach Jimbo Fisher was aware of the situation and looking into it. Smith was scheduled to attend SEC Media Days on Thursday in Atlanta with Fisher and two other players. Smith is Texas A&M's top returning receiver after grabbing 47 catches for 509 yards and six touchdowns last season. He has 1,321 yards receiving with 15 touchdowns in three seasons with the Aggies. - AP College Football

Ainias Smith spoke to his Texas A&M teammates about the importance of starting fast before Saturday night's game against South Carolina. Then he made sure the Aggies did just that. Smith had a 95-yard punt return for a touchdown and Jalen Wydermyer added two TD catches as No. 17 Texas A&M built a huge first-half lead and coasted to a 44-14 rout of South Carolina. The Aggies forced a punt on South Carolina's first drive and Smith returned it for the score. It was the longest punt return for a touchdown in the FBS this season and the longest for the Aggies since Dustin Harris had a 96-yard return for a TD in 2012 against South Carolina State. "My message to the team was...let's start strong and go out here and get an edge on them real quick," Smith said. "And it just so happened that my opportunity came and I was actually going to be that guy." The star rushing duo of Isaiah Spiller and Devone Achane continued to do damage for the Aggies.

They combined for 256 yards and two touchdowns a week after rushing for 292 yards and three touchdowns. Texas A&M (6-2, 3-2 SEC) raced to a 31-0 lead by halftime, and Achane's 35-yard touchdown run made it 41-0 late in the third as the Aggies improved to 8-0 all-time against South Carolina. "That's what a dominant SEC football team looks like and they played like it," South Carolina coach Shane Beamer said. It was the third straight victory for Texas A&M, which knocked off top-ranked Alabama two weeks ago before beating Missouri last week. - Texas A&M/AP College Football
