Just three days after the only game of the fall, NDSU quarterback Trey Lance says he's going to enter the 2021 NFL Draft. This is the first time in FCS history that a redshirt sophomore quarterback is leaving early to go pro. Trey told Yahoo Sports today about his decision to head to the National Football League. Trey Lance threw for two touchdowns, ran for two more and three-time FCS defending champion North Dakota State rallied with a 21-point fourth quarter to beat Central Arkansas 39-28 on Saturday. The Bison's lone fall game was a de facto audition for Lance , judged to be a potential first-round pick if the redshirt sophomore declares for the NFL Draft. As last season's Walter Payton Award winner, he threw for 28 touchdowns with no interceptions in 287 attempts but that run ended Saturday when he was picked by Nick Nakawaasah in the third quarter, which led to Breylin Smith's TD toss to Lujuan Winningham and a 20-18 Bears lead. In the fourth quarter, Lance ran for a score and, after Smith and Winningham connected for another TD, threw to Hunter Luepke for a 32-28 lead.Luepke added the final points on a 13-yard run with under two minutes remaining. Lance rushed for 143 yards on 15 carries and was 15-of-30 passing for 149 yards. Smith was 25 of 38 for 226 yards, three scores and two interceptions. Th e victory extended the Bison's win streak to 38, the longest in FCS history, and home win streak to 29, the longest active run in Division I. They will take part in the Missouri Valley Football Conference's spring season with an eye on winning a 17th nat ional championship. Central Arkansas (2-1) opted out of a potential spring season with the Southland Conference and is playing a 10-game schedule this fall. North Dakota State director of athletics Matt Larsen and head football coach Matt Entz announced Monday, Aug. 24, the Bison football team will play one non-conference game to cap the 2020 fall practice schedule. NDSU will host Central Arkansas at 2:30 p. m. Saturday, Oct. 3, in the first meeting between the two schools. It is the beginning of a three-game contract that includes games in Fargo on Sept. 16, 2023, and Conway, Ark., on Sept. 20, 2025. The Bears, who play in the Southland Conference, have won 35 games and made three NCAA FCS playoff appearances in the past four seasons. Larsen said NDSU's goal was to maximize opportunities to play games after the Missouri Valley Football Conference Presidents Council voted to move the conference schedule to the spring and allow schools, at their discretion, to play non-conference games this fall. - North Dakota State Football

It's easy to say North Dakota State winning another FCS national championship was fate, destiny, something supernatural. But don't. To help college football move toward the conclusion of its 150th season, North Dakota State fittingly beat James Madison 2 8-20 on Saturday while playing the 150th game of one of the greatest decades the sport has ever witnessed. Quite frankly, the Bison have taken "dynasty" by the horns and not relied on magical powers; they are the power in the FCS and create the magic. To cap the 2019 season under first-year coach Matt Entz, the first FCS program to finish 16-0 made it three straight national titles and eight in the final nine seasons of the decade. Their record was a gaudy 137-13 (.913), including an FCS-record 37-game winning streak since 2017.Redshirt freshman Trey Lance, fresh off winning the Stats Perform FCS Walter Payton Award Friday night, was named the championship game's most outstanding player, carrying the ball 30 times for 166 yards, including a 44-y ard touchdown scramble to open the fourth quarter, which made it 28-13. Still, the top-ranked Missouri Valley Conference champ had to hold on against James Madison (14-2) in the closing seconds. The Dukes, who stalked the Bison all season at No. 2, pulle d within 28-20 on quarterback Ben DiNucci's second 5-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Riley Stapleton with 6:55 left. 2019 STATS FCS WALTER PAYTON AWARD WINNER: It's never been done before. That phrase describes many accomplishments of the North Dakota State football dynasty over the past nine seasons, but the Bison added to the list on the eve of the national champions hip game at the STATS FCS Awards banquet. North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance became the first freshman winner in the 33-year history of the STATS FCS Walter Payton Award on Friday, Jan. 10. The award is presented annually to the Offensive Player o f the Year in the Football Championship Subdivision.Lance, a redshirt freshman from Marshall, Minn., last month was named the Jerry Rice Award winner as the top freshman player in the FCS. He is the first to win both national player of the year aw ards, and the first NDSU player to win either award. The fourth national player of the year from NDSU, Lance joins Harlon Hill Trophy-winning quarterbacks Jeff Bentrim (1986) and Chris Simdorn (1990) and Buck Buchanan Award-winning defensive end Kyle Ema nuel (2014). Christian Watson scored long touchdowns on back-to-back touches early in the second quarter and two-time defending FCS champion North Dakota State blitzed Montana State 42-14 in a semifinal on Saturday for its 36th straight victory. Trey Lance found Wats on behind the defense along the left sideline for a 75-yard touchdown one play after the Bobcats tied the game at 7. After a three-and-out by Montana State, Watson went 70 yards on a reverse. Lance threw for three touchdowns, including a 73-yard hookup w ith Dimitri Williams, and scored two rushing touchdowns.The top-seeded Bison (15-0) were in the semifinals for the ninth straight year. They won eight and won the national championship each time. North Dakota State faces the winner of Weber State at second-seeded James Madison. James Madison beat the Bison in the semifinals in 2016. Montana State (11-4) lost to NDSU 52-10 in the second round last year. A week after being held to three field goals in a 9-3 quarterfinal win over Missouri Valley Con ference rival Illinois State, the Bison scored on their opening drive, going 73 yards in 12 plays with Lance scoring on an 8-yard keeper. Griffin Crosa kicked three second-quarter field goals and North Dakota State's defense did the rest as the defending national champion Bison beat Illinois State 9-3 in an FCS quarterfinal on Saturday. The top-seeded Bison (14-0) will host No. 5 seed Mont ana State next week in the semifinals after posting their 35th consecutive victory, extending their own FCS record and tying them for fifth all-time among all Division I programs. They have won seven of the last eight FCS championships including the last two. The Bison held the unseeded Redbirds (10-5) to three points for the second time this season, having beaten Illinois State 37-3 in a Missouri Valley Football Conference game in Fargo on Oct. 5. This time the Redbirds defense kept the game close, all owing only Crosa's field goals of 38, 33 and 22 yards on consecutive possessions for a 9-0 halftime lead.Illinois State's only points came from Sam Fenlason's 27-yard field goal after a 70-yard drive. The Redbirds reached Bison territory only one other time. Trey Lance was 10-of-21 passing for 135 yards and rushed for 41 yards on 11 carries for North Dakota State. Christian Watson had 102 yards receiving by halftime but made only one more catch and finished with 107 yards. The NCAA Division I playoff selection committee spread the wealth in the 24-team pairings, announced Sunday. National power North Dakota State may not be into sharing. Seven of the 10 conferences involved had multiple qualifiers in the field, which hadn' t happened since 2015. North Dakota State, the two-time defending champion and a winner of a record seven of the last FCS titles, earned the No. 1 seed following a 12-0 regular season. The Bison, making their 10th straight appearance out of the Missouri Valley Football Conference, and James Madison have been ranked 1-2, respectively, all season, so as expected, the CAA Football champion Dukes (11-1) claimed the No. 2 seed. On opposite sides of the bracket, they could be on a collision course for the cha mpionship game on Jan. 11 in Frisco, Texas.The Dukes handed the Bison their only playoff loss since 2011 en route to capturing the 2016 title. Both teams have first-year head coaches. "As a team, we talk about 1-0," NDSU's Matt Entz said on the ES PNU selection show. "Each week is its own season, each week has its ups and downs. We try to eliminate any distractions from the outside world, we try to eliminate the noise, make the main thing the main thing." Freshman Jalen Bussey sprinted 65 yards for a touchdown on his first collegiate carry and finished with 123 yards as FCS top-ranked North Dakota State rolled to its 31st consecutive victory, beating Western Illinois 57-21 on Saturday. Bussey burst throug h the line early in the fourth quarter to give the Bison (10-0, 6-0 Missouri Valley Football Conference) a 47-14 lead and added the game's final touchdown on a 45-yard run with just under nine minutes left. Trey Lance ran 23 yards for a touchdown and pas sed 88 yards to Josh Babicz and 51 to Christian Watson for TDs for NDSU, which has beaten the Leathernecks (1-9, 1-5) seven consecutive times. Trey Lance threw for three touchdowns and ran for another and top-ranked North Dakota State beat Youngstown State 56-17 on Saturday night to extend its win streak to 30 games. Lance went 7 of 9 for 160 yards with no interceptions and Kobe Johnson scored on a 94-yard kickoff return and a 75-yard run. The freshman running back finished with 241 all-purpose yards, including 103 rushing. NDSU (9-0, 5-0 Missouri Valley Football Conference) went three-and-out on the game's opening possession but Youngstown St ate's Jake Coates muffed the punt, Ross Kennelly recovered it for the Bison at the 25 and, four plays later, Lance scored on a 9-yard run.The Penguins were forced to punt on their ensuing possession and, after Lance ran for 17 yards on third-and-7 from the 17, he hit Christian Watson in stride for a 69-yard touchdown on a play-action pass to make it 14-0 with 5:22 left in the first quarter. Youngstown State then went three-and-out and Lance connected with Josh Babicz for a 6-yard touchdown about four minutes later. Backup quarterback Joe Craycraft, who replaced starter Nathan Mays late in the first quarter, threw a 23-yard TD pass to Miles Joiner to get the Penguins (5-4, 1-4) on the scoreboard with 55 seconds left in the second quarter but John son's return made it 42-7 at halftime. Clocks will be turned back next Saturday night, but in one way, it's already happened in FCS college football this season. Three teams are unbeaten entering November and they're the same three as last year. -- North Dakota State, which is 8-0, and Prince ton and Dartmouth, each 6-0. NDSU, the two-time defending FCS champion, has won 29 straight games -- the longest active streak in Division I. The Bison are four wins shy of their all-time longest streak in the FCS -- 33 games from 2012-14 -- and can matc h it by winning their four remaining games in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Trey Lance passed for 225 yards and rushed for a touchdown, Adam Cofield picked up two rushing scores and North Dakota State blanked Missouri State 22-0 on Saturday, pushing its win streak to 28 games. Trey Lance threw three touchdown passes and defending FCS champion North Dakota State defeated Illinois State 37-3 on Saturday. The Bison ran their win streak to 26 games, the second-longest in FCS history, matching one by James Madison (2016-17). The Bi son won 33 straight from 2012-14. Lance was a tidy 12-of-15 passing for 189 yards and scoring throws to Christian Watson, Ben Ellefson and Noah Gindorff for the top-ranked Bison (5-0), who won their Missouri Valley Football Conference opener by beating t he Redbirds (3-2), sixth in the coaches poll, for the eighth straight time. Ty Brooks rushed for 106 yards on nine carries, including a 53-yard score.NDSU put up three touchdowns and a field goal in its first four possessions and led 23-3 at halft ime. The Bison outgained the Redbirds 482-200 in total yards and gave up just 79 on the ground. Illinois State almost had a touchdown at the end of the third quarter when Brady Davis threw to Kacper Rutkiewicz for a 64-yard gain to the 1-yard line but th e Bison stuffed two runs, a penalty cost the Redbirds 5 yards and then NDSU broke up two passes. In what can only be described as a rollercoaster game featuring six ties and six lead changes in regulation, then-No. 18 Villanova outlasted then-No. 5 Towson and came away with a 52-45 over-time victory. Trey Lance rushed for a pair of touchdowns and two fourth-quarter interceptions boosted FCS top-ranked North Dakota State to a 27-16 victory over fourth-ranked UC Davis on Saturday, extending the Bison's win streak to 25 games. Michael Tutsie intercepted Jake Maier at the Bison 2 on a third-and goal with 6:44 remaining. UC Davis (3-3) got the ball back about three minutes later but Maier's pass was deflected by lineman Derrek Tuszka into the hands of teammate Cole Karcz to put the Bison at the Aggies 18 . Trey Lance passed for two touchdowns and rushed for two more and North Dakota State defeated North Dakota 38-7 on Saturday for the Bison's 23rd consecutive victory, the longest current streak in Division I. Lance, who accounted for six touchdowns in the freshman's starting debut against Butler last week, was 11-of-15 passing for 162 yards and rushed for a game-high 95 yards on 16 carries against the Fighting Hawks (1-1). Lance's 2-yard toss to Ben Ellefson gave the FCS top-ranked Bison (2-0) a 21-7 half time lead. Lance's 14-yard run made it 38-7 with under 10 minutes to play. NDSU outgained North Dakota 428-216. This was the 112th meeting between the instate rivals but the first since Sept. 19, 2015, when NDSU won in the first Division I matchup betwee n the programs. Lance, a redshirt freshman making his first start and one of 36 players from Minnesota on the Bison roster, dazzled a crowd of 34,554 at Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins. He had all four of his passing touchdowns and a rushing score by halftime with NDSU leading 36-0. The game was the first as a head coach for North Dakota State's Matt Entz, who had been the program's defensive coordinator the past five seasons. This was the second football game played at Target Field. St. John's and St. Thomas drew a Division-III record crowd of 37,555 on Sept. 23, 2017.The Bison, winners of seven of the past eight FCS championship games, including the last two, are again top-ranked and showed why, piling up 605 yards offense while holding the Bulldogs to just 198 - 67 in the first half - in the season opener for both teams.
