Orgeron said it was LSU's plan to double-team Smith throughout the game, but Alabama moved the star receiver around in different alignments, making it difficult to match him with defenders. Smith won in the one-on-one matchups Alabama created, and, for a time, forced linebacker Jabril Cox to line up at cornerback, with Micah Baskerville and backup Damone Clark playing linebacker inside. "It was just kind of frustrating to see one player have almost 300 yards in the first half," Orgeron said. With two games remaining, Orgeron must once again revive a team after an embarrassing loss. Alabama's beatdown even surpasses Auburn's 48-11 win on Halloween as the biggest LSU loss since 1996.

LSU and its struggling defense will face No. 6 Florida and its Heisman candidate quarterback, Kyle Trask, next week, then host Ole Miss in the season finale Dec. 19. Orgeron reinforced that he promised he wouldn't make any coaching changes until the end of the season, which means Pelini's job is safe for at least another two weeks. Cox said the Tigers remain confident in their defensive scheme. With only eight returning starters from the last year's national champions, "there's a lot of new faces," he said. "You can say it's a rebuilding year," Cox said. - Baton Rouge Advocate

LSU linebacker Jabril Cox has been named among 16 semifinalists for the Dick Butkus Award for nation's best linebacker, the Butkus Foundation announced Monday. Former All-American Devin White was the first LSU player to win the Butkus Award in 2018, and he eventually was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft. Cox is LSU's fourth-leading tackler with 36 total tackles, and he is tied for second on the team with 4½ tackles for loss while adding one sack.

The 6-foot-4, 231-pound North Dakota State graduate transfer has become LSU's top defensive playmaker. Cox returned an interception for a touchdown in the season opener against Mississippi State, and, against Arkansas, he returned another interception just shy of the goal line. "Obviously a game-winning play," LSU coach Ed Orgeron said of Cox's interception in LSU's 27-24 win over Arkansas, which set up a quick rushing touchdown. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Man, the recruiting services were way off on this guy. He was rated a two-star prospect coming out of high school and signed with North Dakota State, where he turned out to be a five-star player and a two-time FCS All-American. He's an explosive defensive playmaker who should be an instant starter - and impact player - for the Tigers. - Gainesville Sun

His statement thanking NDSU head football coach and his former linebacker coach Matt Entz, the staff and Bison fans for the support in Fargo. He confirmed his dream to play FBS football and asked for the support of those that cheered him on in Fargo, in his pursuit of this next dream.

The 6-foot-3, 233-pound Cox was the 2018 defensive player of the year in the Missouri Valley Football Conference and made the Stats Perform FCS All-America second team after his sophomore and junior seasons. He has 258 tackles, including 32 tackles for loss and 14 sacks, and nine takeaways in 45 career games, including 38 starts. While Cox will draw interest from FBS programs, entering the transfer portal doesn't necessarily mean he will leave North Dakota State. - Valley News Live

Undefeated two-time defending national champion North Dakota State is the No. 1 overall seed for the NCAA Division I Football Championship and will host a second round playoff game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, against the winner of this week's first round game featuring North Dakota at Nicholls. Nicholls (8-4) has won four straight games and went 7-2 in the Southland Conference clinching its second straight conference title with a 28-27 road win over Southeastern Louisiana in the final game of the regular season. NDSU is 2-0 against Nicholls with a 24-14 victory in Thibodaux in 2004 and a 26-13 victory in Fargo in 2005.

North Dakota (7-4) won its final two games of the regular season to earn an at-large berth in the FCS playoffs for the second time in program history. NDSU beat UND 38-7 in Fargo in the second game of the 2019 season and has won both meetings as Division I opponents including a 34-9 home win in 2015. The teams split two Division II playoff meetings with UND winning the 1994 quarterfinal in Grand Forks 14-7 and the Bison winning the 1995 first round game in Grand Forks 41-10. North Dakota State (12-0) is the automatic qualifier from the Missouri Valley Football Conference and as the No. 1 seed will have home-field advantage through the semifinal round. NDSU has a 24-1 playoff record in the Fargodome, where the Bison currently have a 25-game winning streak. This is NDSU's 10th straight postseason appearance. The Bison have a 32-2 in the FCS playoffs over the past nine years including national championships in seven of the past eight seasons. - North Dakota State Football

North Dakota State was down two starting linebackers Saturday against the University South Dakota. Strong side linebacker Jabril Cox and weak side linebacker Aaron Mercadel were not in uniform for the Bison's 49-14 victory over the Coyotes in Missouri Valley Football Conference play at the Fargodome.

Cox, a junior, left last week's game against Western Illinois and sat out against the Coyotes in what Bison head coach Matt Entz said was "a swollen knee." Entz said Cox could have played against USD if the game was more in the line of a "one-and-done" playoff scenario. - Inforum
