 Joshua Kelley, UCLA, Player News

  04/20/20 - RB Joshua KelleyrSr/2020, UCLA, 5-11, 212 (DS#11 RB) + More +

Joshua Kelley received just one offer to play collegiate football coming out of Eastside High in Lancaster. After two seasons for UC Davis, he transferred as a walk-on to UCLA in 2017. Due to NCAA transfer rules, he sat out that first year in Westwood, but immediately made an impact on the team as part of its scouting corps. His positive influence, on not only the players but the program as a whole, earned him a scholarship before the start of the 2018 season. Kelley had yet to play a game as a Bruin, but his hard work had spoken for itself. It wasn't long into the season before he'd proved his worth. With six 100-yard rushing games, and 1,243 total yards, Kelley ran for the 10th-most yards in a single-season in school history. His 289-yard performance against USC was the most in the rivalry by a running back from either team.

His 113.0 yards per game average ranked him No. 4 in the Pac-12 and No. 8 in the NCAA. And even more telling, his team awarded him MVP honors for his first season in at UCLA. "Most people, when they first meet him, they're like, 'Is this guy for real?' And he is," UCLA coach Chip Kelly said. "He's like that every single day. He's just got a great attitude and you're excited to be around him." Kelley returned to UCLA for a final year in 2019 and continued to set record after record in becoming the Bruins' star running back. Not only did he become the eighth running back in UCLA history to record back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons, but he also received the team's MVP honors for the second consecutive year. He ended his Bruin career ranked 14th on the school's all-time rushing list with 2,303 yards. - Orange County Register

Joshua Kelley ran for more than 100 yards at the Senior Bowl. Darnay Holmes ran the 40-yard dash in 4.48 seconds at the NFL combine. Devin Asiasi bench-pressed 225 pounds 16 times at the combine. For a slew of less-heralded UCLA players hoping to be selected in the NFL draft this month, their fates will largely be a tale of the tape. Their college tape. The cancellation of the Bruins' annual pro day amid the novel coronavirus outbreak has left NFL scouts with little to go on when assessing potential besides what players had already shown in college. "A lot of the decisions on players that didn't go to the combine will be based solely on the film that they put on and we had scouts from every single team in the NFL at practice at the fall," UCLA coach Chip Kelly said on a teleconference Thursday, "so their write-ups on practice and what-not I think is what the NFL teams will rely on for those guys."

Kelley, Holmes, Asiasi and kicker J.J. Molson all displayed their skills and had their measurements taken at the combine, allowing teams to gauge their potential in person and conduct medical evaluations that can alleviate any concerns about lingering injuries or health issues. But UCLA teammates Boss Tagaloa, Krys Barnes and Josh Woods head into the draft as bigger unknowns in NFL circles because they did not receive combine invitations or participate in a pro day. "I think it hurts those guys a little bit," Kelly said. "It happened to everybody. Unfortunately, this pandemic hit and there's nothing you can do about it." - Los Angeles Times

2019 ALL-PAC-12 SECOND TEAM (COACHES): RB Joshua Kelley, Sr., UCLA,...Kelley, who made the conference's honorable mention list after a breakout 2018, became just the eighth UCLA running back to rush for 1,000 yards or more in back-to-back seasons. Kelley, who did not play in the Bruins' season opener, finished with 1,060 yards on the ground. His 229 carries, 12 rushing touchdowns and 96.4 rushing yards per game average are all good for second in the Pac-12. Kelley's average jumped to 106.2 in conference games. The Lancaster, Calif. native's standout performances came in UCLA's home upset defeat of No. 24 Arizona State (Oct. 24). Kelley toted the ball 34 times for 176 yards and four touchdowns-all season highs-in the 42-32 triumph. He is the only Pac-12 player to tally four rushing touchdowns in a game this season. - UCLA Football

UCLA has gone from woeful to controlling its own destiny in the Pac-12 South in less than a month. The Bruins won their third straight game as Dorian Thompson-Robinson passed for two touchdowns and Joshua Kelley added two rushing scores in a 31-14 victory over Colorado on Saturday night at the Rose Bowl. UCLA -- which is on its first three-game winning streak since 2015 -- goes into the bye week 4-5 overall but 4-2 in conference play. It trails ninth-ranked Utah by just a game in the division going into their Nov. 16 matchup in Salt Lake City. "It's definitely a good feeling, to know that you're in control of your own destiny, and stuff like that, and that you're able to go and make something out of it. Now we just have to go and put the work in and get it done," Thompson-Robinson said.

The Bruins victory mirrored their earlier wins against Stanford and Arizona State. Their offense was balanced, and the defense was able to get consistent pressure on Colorado quarterback Steven Montez. Thompson-Robinson was 21-of-28 for 226 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. The sophomore completed 10 of his first 11, including first-quarter TDs of 16 yards to Devin Asiasi and 45 yards to Ethan Fernea as the Bruins jumped out to a 17-0 lead 12 minutes into the game. The offense took advantage of the defense forcing the Buffaloes to go three-and-out on their first two possessions and Krys Barnes' interception on the third series. - UCLA/AP College Football

Kelley rushed for 164 yards and a career-high four touchdowns in a 42-32 victory over Arizona State last weekend, the first Bruin with four rushing TDs in a game since Myles Jack in 2013. A junior, Kelley is just the fourth player nationally with four rushing touchdowns in a game this season, and first in the Pac-12. "You know, I like playing at the Rose Bowl," Kelley said following the performance. "We needed a win here, for sure. We haven't had a win at home this season. So that was an extra incentive for us. But our offensive line was so amazing. I can't do that without them." Kelly is averaging 105 yards a game this season, tops in the Pac-12, and he's second in the league to Moss with eight total touchdowns. - AP College Football

UCLA coach Chip Kelly has often said that when running back Joshua Kelley plays well, the Bruins have a shot of winning. The senior running back had a career night Saturday, which is why the Bruins were able to beat a Top 25 team for the second time this season. Kelley scored a career-high four touchdowns and rushed for 164 yards in UCLA's 42-32 victory over 24th-ranked Arizona State. Kelley has rushed for over 100 yards in three of the past four games. He is the first Pac-12 player and fourth nationally this season to have four rushing touchdowns in a game. "We needed a win here for sure. That was extra incentive for us," said Kelley of the Bruins first home victory. "Us getting back-to-back wins is big for our young core."

Kelly is also the first Bruin with four ground TDs since Myles Jack against Washington in 2013. He helped fuel a UCLA ground game that had 217 yards, marking the first time since 2014 it has had four straight 200-yard games. "I think when everyone in the stadium knows you are going to run it and you are still able to do it, that's a credit to the whole group," Kelly said. The Bruins (3-5, 3-2) scored on five of their first six drives, including four consecutive possessions from late in the first quarter to midway in the third to roar out to a 35-7 lead after it was tied at 7. - UCLA/AP College Football

Kelley is averaging 135.3 yards in his last four games after mustering just 52 per game in his first three. He opened the scoring with 10:53 remaining in the first quarter on a leap over the middle from 1 yard. The touchdown came five plays after Elisha Guidry recovered Benjamin's fumble at the Sun Devils 42. The senior had 100 yards in the first half, including a 5-yard TD late in the first quarter and a 16-yard run up the middle midway through the second quarter as the Bruins took control. Both of those runs capped 16-play possessions, which is the first time the Bruins have had a pair of scoring drives of 15 plays or more since a game against Texas in 2014. He extended UCLA's lead to 35-7 with 10:40 remaining in the third quarter with a 15-yard touchdown. - UCLA/AP College Football

UCLA running back Joshua Kelley is officially "day-to-day" with a knee injury, head coach Chip Kelly said Sunday before practice. Kelley, UCLA's star running back, sustained the injury in practice Thursday and has not been on the field for practice the past three days. He was seen before practice on the field Sunday, wearing a yellow noncontact jersey and a bulky brace on his right leg that stretched from his thigh to his ankle. Flanked by several members of the training staff, Kelley stood stationary while catching passes from the jugs machine in the corner of the field before slipping into the weight room when the rest of the team began practice.

When asked about the redshirt senior who carried UCLA's running attack with 1,243 rushing yards last year, Kelly was nonchalant. "We're not going to lose Josh Kelley, so Josh is day-to-day," the coach said, speaking to reporters for the first time since before Thursday's practice. "He should be back in a couple of days, so he's fine." - Orange County Register
