Former LSU wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase officially declared Tuesday for the 2021 NFL draft. Chase announced the decision on his Twitter account. Chase opted out of the 2020 college football season two weeks ago. Though expected to prepare for the draft, he didn't specify his future plans, only saying he looked forward to returning to the field next year. Chase, a junior, had one season left of eligibility. After a record-setting year in which he won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation's best receiver in 2019, mock drafts have projected him as an early first-round pick. - Baton Rouge Advocate

The Southeastern Conference has established September 26 as the new kickoff for its 2020 football season to allow its universities to focus on the healthy return of their campus communities and the gradual re-introduction of athletics, as the 14 members of the SEC continue to monitor developments related to COVID-19, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey announced Thursday. The 2020 SEC football season will be comprised of a 10-game Conference-only schedule and the SEC Football Championship Game will be played December 19 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, rescheduled from the original date of December 5. The schedule will include one mid-season open date for each school and an open date on December 12 for all schools.

"This new plan for a football schedule is consistent with the educational goals of our universities to allow for the safe and orderly return to campus of their student populations and to provide a healthy learning environment during these unique circumstances presented by the COVID-19 virus," Sankey said. "This new schedule supports the safety measures that are being taken by each of our institutions to ensure the health of our campus communities." This action was taken following extensive discussions and thorough deliberation among the SEC's Presidents and Chancellors, Athletics Directors, Conference Office staff, and medical advisors, led by the SEC's Return to Activity and Medical Guidance Task Force. - SEC Football

The Tallahassee Quarterback Club (TQC) Foundation, Inc., the Florida-based creator and sponsor of the prestigious Biletnikoff Award, has released the 2020 Biletnikoff Award Preseason Watch List. The Biletnikoff Award annually recognizes the college football season's outstanding FBS receiver. Any player, regardless of position (wide receiver, tight end, slot back, and running back) who catches a pass is eligible for the award. As such, the Biletnikoff Award recognizes college football's outstanding receiver, not merely college football's outstanding wide receiver.

The name Biletnikoff is synonymous with the term receiver. Fred Biletnikoff, a member of the pro and college football halls of fame, was a consensus All-America receiver at Florida State University, and an All-Pro receiver for the Oakland Raiders. He caught 589 passes for 8,974 yards and 76 touchdowns in his 14-year Raiders career from 1965 through 1978. Fred was the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XI. - The Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation

SEC Media Days will take place in a virtual format for the first time this year due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, it was announced Wednesday. The annual football kickoff event had been scheduled for July 13-16 at the College Football Hall of Fame and Omni Hotel in Atlanta. The dates and times for the virtual SEC Media Days will be announced at a later date. "Conducting football media days in a virtual format will provide us the opportunity to manage the event in a healthy manner as we continue to be impacted by COVID-19, and will provide flexibility for our programs to adjust their preparation for the 2020 football season according to the preseason calendar that is expected to be expanded due to the cancellation of the spring football season," SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said. "We look forward to returning to our traditional media days format in 2021." The virtual event will include Sankey's "State of the SEC" address, as well as media sessions with the league's 14 head football coaches and select student-athletes. SEC Network will once again provide television coverage. - Birmingham News

LSU star receiver Ja'Marr Chase is switching from No. 1 to No. 7 this season, leaving his old number open to two of LSU's high-profile incoming freshman, cornerback Elias Ricks and wide receiver Kayshon Boutte of New Iberia Westgate. Sophomore linebacker Marcel Brooks will keep No. 9, which he shared with Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Joe Burrow last season. No offensive player will wear No. 9 this season, however. LSU has also not yet announced which player or players will wear the coveted No. 18 this season. - Baton Rouge Advocate

The Southeastern Conference university presidents will vote on an undetermined date whether players will be able to return to campus on either June 1 or June 15, LSU Executive Deputy Athletic Director Verge Ausberry told the Louisiana Economic Recovery Task Force Thursday. Ausberry, who also serves as LSU's Executive Director of External Relations, told the task force that the athletic department is aiming to return its players to campus on June 1, something athletic director Scott Woodward had also said in the department's virtual Coaches Caravan Wednesday night.

"The presidents are going to take a vote in the SEC," Ausberry told the task force, a unit of private sector business leaders who advise lawmakers on the economy's recovery amid the spread of coronavirus. "Do we come back? Do we bring the students back on June 1 or June 15?" Ausberry told the task force the vote would happen on May 22, but, in a phone call later with The Advocate, he clarified he misspoke on the date and said a vote will happen at an undetermined date. - Baton Rouge Advocate
